To ask what the best restaurant in the UK you've eaten at is

Both high end and small/ local and Why?

I'll start- number one at the Balmoral in Edinburgh. Treated ourselves due to celebrating new house and job and it was simply amazing. We did the taster menu and it was beautiful from start to finish, tried loads of food I wouldn't normally try and the service was top notch (was expensive!). Small and local to me, Bistro Franc in Liverpool, does a Sunday wine and dine offer and every time we've been is spot on in terms of the food and really good value. Me and DP are big foodies and usually have a good read of TripAdvisor before we go.

Don't do it now due to lifestyle change/increased costs but in the UK
Ramsay on Hospital Rd - fantastic foh staff, beautiful restaurant and lovely food.
Waterside - Bray. Lovely food/location and bedrooms
Le Manoir - just lovely in every aspect but don't think they do 1 x night stays anymore. they have their own pastry chef!!
Les Ambassadeurs at the Crillon in Paris. World class hotel and fantastic staff - similarly
Gaddis at The Peninsular in Hong Kong. Don't know if the restaurant exists now but it's opulence and attention to detail was amazing. I'd never seen dining at that level but it set the bar.

I'd like to try Le Gavroche (set lunch) but a bit expensive with a 7yr old in tow - but she would prob. love it. Also 3 Chimneys and The Dorchester but really these are expense account places and I cant do them now.
I've also had some lovely dinners at the Logis de France chain in Europe where the Chimney rating really works. Not stupid money either.

Rules in London was absolutely beautiful from the moment we arrived to the moment we left.

April2020mom · 26/10/2018 21:14

I’ve eaten at several places over the years. All things nice is a popular tearoom near the library on the high street. Also I love going to a tearoom that’s within walking distance of my apartment. Lovely food and efficient service. For my birthday we ate dinner at a pub in the neighbourhood. Decent food and service.

Wilks in Bristol was fabulous, loved the atmosphere as well as the amazing food.

Tequilamockinbird · 26/10/2018 21:24

Corrigans in Mayfair. Very nice food but tiny portions. I was starving when we left and after my clients had gone (it was a work event), I went to the tesco local and bought a meal deal Blush

Jellycatspyjamas · 26/10/2018 21:24

The Peat Inn in Fife for my 40th was wonderful. Also love the Ho Wong in Glasgow for Chinese food. And the Red Onion also in Glasgow for a weekday pre-theatre.

Tobebythesea · 26/10/2018 22:57

Noma in Copenhagen. Amazing.

Tobebythesea · 26/10/2018 22:58

Sorry, you wanted the UK. Dinner by Heston

Dacresmallwilly · 26/10/2018 23:01

River Cottage Kitchen in Axminster. So understated and utterly delicious

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 26/10/2018 23:03

Nice to see this thread popping back up in active. Salt, the restaurant I recommended previously has just been awarded a Michelin star. So pleased for them.

ohnothanks · 26/10/2018 23:07

I second Hakkasan Hanway Place. Brilliant.

Lower cost pLaces? Hmmmm. I love a GBK .

craftymum01 · 26/10/2018 23:09

Another vote for the waterside inn. We spent the night there too and the rooms are just lovely, very quaint.
Most disappointing was the Fat Duck. Can’t put my finger on why but possibly because of all the hype around it I was expecting to be amazed, and some of the food was just alright. Love his pub hinds head though.

ComtesseDeSpair · 26/10/2018 23:13

Hard to pick between the Ubiqutous Chip in Glasgow; the Victoria Inn in Holkham; the Sportsman in Whitstable; and the Waterfall Kebab House on Holloway Road in London which does the most amazing lamb shish and Turkish meat stews. I eat at the latter most often, obviously - but all are amazing examples of places which do what they do so very well.

craftymum01 · 26/10/2018 23:14

Oh I love the ubiquitous chip! Went there for a post-graduation meal

Didsomeonesaybunny · 26/10/2018 23:16

Le Gavroche
Hakassan (Hanway Place)
Park Chinois
L’atelier
Clos Maggiore
Yauatcha (Soho better than the City imo)
Pollen Street Social
Tramshed
Hix oyster house
Pidgin
Dishoom (King’s Cross and Hackney v.good)
St Johns
Calloway Terrace

Disappointed with

Fat Duck
Children Firehouse
Sexy fish (cocktails great, food just ok)
34 Mayfair
Isabel

Didsomeonesaybunny · 26/10/2018 23:16

*Dalloway Terrace

Monstersunderthebed · 26/10/2018 23:16

Rupali palace Indian in forfar when we travelled up to forfar a couple of years ago. Delicious

BillThePony · 26/10/2018 23:18

Michael Mina in San Francisco was my all time favourite. My local favourite is Chez Bruce especially on a Sunday

BillThePony · 26/10/2018 23:20

Oh and the best Pub food I have ever eaten was a place in Cheshire called the Dysart Arms, best steak and Kidney Pudding ever eaten.

HomeEdRocks18 · 26/10/2018 23:24

The Roof Gardens in Kensington.
The service was great, the setting was amazing - 100ft up, flamingos in the pond, the food was delicious especially the sea bass. The cocktails were so good.

Blanchedupetitpois · 27/10/2018 00:09

The Three Chimneys on the Isle of Skye. All local, fresh produce cooked so beautifully and the hospitality is outstanding.

nokidshere · 27/10/2018 00:31

Also a fan of a small place in York called Melton’s

@AveAtqueVale many years ago we heard about Melton's and got a train from London to York after work just to eat there. We were not disappointed, it was amazing. Keep meaning to go back!

AtSea1979 · 27/10/2018 00:44

Magpies in Whitby
David Bann in Edinburgh
Jabula in Cheshire

NewToCats · 27/10/2018 01:11

@Piffpaffpoff
The Bistro in Kingussie. Near Aviemore. Only open for dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings, and if you don't book ahead you might not get in. Amazing food. Only has about 10 tables.

PlinkPlink · 27/10/2018 01:18

RockFish Torquay (there's one in Plymouth too)

Delicious, gluten free goodness... literally the best fish and chips ever.
