To tell DD about Myra Hindley

TheCatWearsOrange · 26/02/2018 10:46

DH reckons it was completely unecessary and distasteful.

Context is she's doing homework on Bonnie from Bonnie and Clyde and was stuck on her 'relevance'. So I came in with Myra Hindley as the most hated British person in the last century (with crimes that go against what women are 'supposed' to be) versus Bonnie who is glamorous and celebrated (reinvented as blonde and sassy and romantic). Both with the common aspect of being in thrall to an older criminal man.

How old is she? If she’s old enough for it not to give her nightmares, YANBU.

beepthemeep · 26/02/2018 10:48

How old is she, Op?

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 26/02/2018 10:49

It depends on age and maturity levels. DS1 is 12 and I'd tell him about MH if it was relevant to something he knew or was learning.

DS2 is 7 and he wouldn't be old enough or mature enough to comprehend any of it.

JoeyMaynardssolidlump · 26/02/2018 10:50

Depends how old she is!

Nothing wrong with teaching children that women can be bad people too not just men.

I would just keep the details sketchy. As an adult I can’t take the details of what they did on board

Kinraddie · 26/02/2018 10:50

15 - fine. 6 - not fine. It's a pretty crucial piece of info you're missing here OP.

Purplejay · 26/02/2018 10:50

How old is DD?

i am not sure the two are comparable but can see where you were going with it.

How was DD about it?

TheCatWearsOrange · 26/02/2018 10:52

Sorry - she's 14

OP posts:
TheCatWearsOrange · 26/02/2018 10:54

I think the dynamic of the two women is actually very similar.

The influential older man
The escalating double act crime spree and finally
The takeover of the story by the media

Although the crimes are of course very different

I remember my mum telling me about Myra Hindley when I was about 7, in the context of her getting a new passport and exclaiming "oh god, I look like Myra Hindley" and then having to explain. Never did me any harm... unless you count my obsession with true crime podcasts Grin

Trinity66 · 26/02/2018 10:55

14 is more than old enough imo

Xineop · 26/02/2018 10:55

She's 14! That's completely fine, she's not a little kid.

retainertrainer · 26/02/2018 10:55

I think that’s fine at 14.

DoraMilaje · 26/02/2018 10:56

14! Is he usually quite over protective?

acornsandnuts · 26/02/2018 10:56

Nothing inappropriate at all at 14.

ChilliCheeseMama · 26/02/2018 10:56

I wrote an essay about Lord Lucan when I was in Year 4 (about 8 I think?) remember being fascinated and totally miffed why my teacher didn't appreciate my true crime writing 🙄

DoraMilaje · 26/02/2018 10:57

True crime podcasts? I would love that! Any that you can recommend @lecossaise ?

beepthemeep · 26/02/2018 10:57

14?? It's a horrible sad part of British criminal history and she is not too young to learn about it at 14 IMO.

When I was a toddler, we lived very near there at the time the crimes were being committed, so my siblings and I grew up knowing about it. Children are capable of processing a lot more than we give them credit for. Not that there aren't limits!

maddiemookins16mum · 26/02/2018 10:58

I told DD (13) about MH when IB died last year. She asked about them when it was all over the news.

Purplejay · 26/02/2018 11:05

14 is fine. He is BU.

beepthemeep · 26/02/2018 11:07

I think also he is forgetting we live in an age of modern technology. Every time your DD sees the news or sees the headlines on her smart phone, she's going to see horrible stories, sadly Sad

eddiemairswife · 26/02/2018 11:07

I used to love reading about murders as a child. We had the Daily Mirror and I remember crouching on the floor reading it while mum got my breakfast. I particularly remember the case of Neville Heath, who was hanged two days before my 9th birthday. The Mirror was a proper newspaper then.

ilovesooty · 26/02/2018 11:10

Of course she's old enough. Your husband is being ridiculous.

amusedbush · 26/02/2018 11:11

unless you count my obsession with true crime podcasts

I'm obsessed with true crime and have spent days hours glued to Netflix watching Forensic Files, Real Detective, The Confession Tapes, Making a Murderer, etc. I love, love, loved The Jinx but had to watch it online, they haven't put it on Netflix yet.

QuimReaper · 26/02/2018 11:12

Fourteen! I'm surprised she hasn't heard of Myra Hindley anyway at that age, of course she's old enough!

Is your husband also protective of her belief in the tooth fairy? Grin

WorraLiberty · 26/02/2018 11:12

Jesus, FOURTEEN??

I despair sometimes, I really do.

YANBU obviously OP. What on earth is your DH thinking of?
