DH reckons it was completely unecessary and distasteful.

Context is she's doing homework on Bonnie from Bonnie and Clyde and was stuck on her 'relevance'. So I came in with Myra Hindley as the most hated British person in the last century (with crimes that go against what women are 'supposed' to be) versus Bonnie who is glamorous and celebrated (reinvented as blonde and sassy and romantic). Both with the common aspect of being in thrall to an older criminal man.

I think at 14 that's more than old enough, most of us will have grown up knowing the sad story from the media portrayal and MH's attempts at parole.

I recommend reading "one of your own" to those interested in whether Hindley was an equal participant with Brady.
David Smith was indeed groomed by Brady, but unlike Hindley he went to the police.
I find it odd to draw comparisons between Hindley and other female criminals to be honest.

@GrimDamnFanjo Witness (now known as Evil Relations) is worth a read too - it's Smith's story.
Interesting that the one bit of Brady and Hindley's story that everyone believed was how he was in on it - that label wrecked his life and yet he still said that has he known he'd still turn them in.
There's also the way he was treated by Police - first as a suspect but given no support as a witness.

There's some grim stuff on the web about what the Moors murderers did - if your 14 year old finds this stuff, it could be too disturbing for a 14 year old. I,ve seen photo of lesley anne downey gagged, taken by Brady as well as a corpse photo of edward evans. Then theres the transcript of lesley's torture. Are you sure you want her to see this?
Bonnie's story might be better - she never actually killed anyone but police and media painted her as a cold killer in order to justify police shooting her dead.
The book Go Down Together tells the real Binnie and Clyde story - they were not the monsters that the media portrayed.
