Me again. And I think we're in spider hell. How the fuck has this happened? And what the actual fuck do I do now?

I had one of those walk from open window on to my bed. I am not scared of spiders at all but this was startling, I shot out of the bed. My neighbor had couple in the house. We are in south of UK. They are completely harmless and it is so cold they try to come inside.

ScienceIsTruth · 24/02/2018 11:03

I'm also in the SE.

Purplerain101 · 24/02/2018 11:05

I have a really severe phobia of them - will cry and hyperventilate if I see one in the house. Wish I could get over the phobia as it’s debilitating during the warmer months when huge ones come into the house on a weekly basis. I don’t like to kill them though so will normally get someone to catch it and take it about 20 meters from my house to release it. I once saw someone pour a kettle of boiling water over a big house spider. It killed it within 5 seconds but it was horrible to see it suffer like that. No living creature deserves to be burned alive no matter how scary they can be

Purplerain101 · 24/02/2018 11:07

I read somewhere that we are never more than 10ft away from a spider at any time. I’m sure we all have tiny ones living all over our houses, and the big ones often live in our homes all year round and only come out occasionally during mating season etc. I always scan the bathroom when I go in there to make sure there isn’t one lurking

LeighaJ · 24/02/2018 11:07

Don't some types of baby spiders eat their mother? Wondering if the babies can't escape if they'll resort to eating their meaty Mum.

Eppia · 24/02/2018 11:13

Aw, she’s beautiful. A proud mother protecting her unborn babies.

She seems quite little to me,but I guess that’s because I have this lovely girl living in my dining room...

I thought baby spiders ate their Mum as food?

cygnet12 · 24/02/2018 11:15

@Eppia what's her name? Does she purr ? Shock

Eppia · 24/02/2018 11:18

She’s called Fluffy Grin

She doesn’t purr, but she does tap her fuzzy legs and occasionally wave her fangs about in an endearing matter...

QuitMoaning · 24/02/2018 11:22

Flies are disgusting. They spread disease.

Spiders eat flies. Spiders do not spread disease.

To me the maths is obvious.

flumpybear · 24/02/2018 11:35

I'm sorry I thought I heard you say somebody bought your child a spider farm, I mean who the FUCKERRY FUCK would do that .... you must have said kitten farm

BexConnor · 24/02/2018 11:35

She's beautiful. I love spiders. Thank you for not squashing her/hoovering her up etc! Smile
I get why people find them a little freaky, but they're seriously not out to get anyone. All they want to do is be a spider.

flumpybear · 24/02/2018 11:39

Bex- one chased me, literally chased me
Around my
Dads house once - followed me
From room to room .... it was enormous dad was shit at cleaning his home! It sealed its own fate with the bag of potatoes I hurled at it ..... it was him or me, I won with a small MI being my only battle scar

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/02/2018 11:40

Anyway, we need people who aren't scared of spiders... Otherwise spiders would rule the world 😁

SugarPlumFerry · 24/02/2018 11:42

Fuck that entirely.

Put it in a box, wrap it up nicely and give back to ex friend, since they think spider farms are such a fabulous idea. 🤢

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 24/02/2018 11:52

Whilst that scares the shit out of me, I'd also find it weirdly fascinating!

With regards to the holes in the tank OP, is it just the lid that's ventilated? If so, find an old piece of material (not to thick). Take lid off, stretch material across top, then pop lid back on (which should hold material in place). This should stop the littlies escaping. Used a similar trick with baby cockroaches Grin.

BexConnor · 24/02/2018 11:54

flumpybear - I have never heard of a house spider chasing anyone. Were you dressed in a fly costume by any chance??

cygnet12 · 24/02/2018 11:55

@Eppia love it!!

girlandboy · 24/02/2018 12:07

Eppia - how many legs has Fluffy got. I can only see a tiny picture but I thought I counted 10!
Or are those two at the front something else?

freakyspider · 24/02/2018 12:09

Mycar baby whatwhat now?

Baby hissing cockroaches ... very small and quick ... slow up loads by the time they get to this size tho. Son wanted stick insects, but these are much easier to keep, as I am very lazy!

Eppia · 24/02/2018 12:33

@girlandboy, you are probably seeing her pedipalps - sensory organs that she uses a bit like arms, e.g. to move a locust into her mouth. Not considered ‘legs’ but they do look like short extra legs at the front. The two stumpy bits in at the very front in the first pic are the tops of her fangs - the sharp bits are hidden underneath.

Here’s a second pic I’ve just taken in which you can clearly see her pedipalps (which are now hiding her fangs).

@mycar, they’re lovely!

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 24/02/2018 12:41

@Eppia Thank you! Whilst I am bloody terrified of spiders, they do still fascinate me. These are absolutely gorgeous (still not tempted tho Grin).

Summercat · 24/02/2018 12:43

That is an awesome spider. I would not kill it (and its babies.)

I would carefully move it out of the house though. (To a garage or outhouse or shed...?) I actually did this some weeks back, when I found a pregnant spider in my kitchen. (Moved it into the garage...)

Several years ago, a pregnant spider got away from me, and crawled into a little hole in the skirting board in the hall, and for about 6 MONTHS, we had little spiders running around the hall and kitchen. (The hall leads on to the kitchen...)

Some days, we would wake up, and walk to the kitchen, and see anything from 5-15 spiders, and they all looked the same. They were definitely from that pregnant spider, and the same 'litter..' (Probably not the right word...) After about 6 months, they all seemed to disappear. It was June-ish by then, so they probably all went outside.

But yep, I would have to move it. As I said, I moved the one I saw the other week into the garage, so it wouldn't freeze to death! Now, I keep seeing lots of little spiders in there! The garage is 25-30 feet from my house though. (At the foot of my garden....)
