To ask for help for a middle aged woman who needs a fancy dress costume?

As in me. For ruddy world book day. Any suggestions for a size 18/20 menopausal woman will be gratefully received.

I need to be:-

  1. Instantly recognisable to teenagers (CBA to spend the day explaining who I am to them)
  2. Cool. Hot flushes combined with windows that don't open more than an inch means my favoured costume would probably be a bikini at the moment - if I didn't fear I would traumatise most of my students irreparably.
  3. Comfy. See weight/age/menopause.

I'm frankly lacking any brilliant ideas (other than asking the gurus of Mumsnet for help). I've been Cruella in the past. And Professor McGonagall. I'm not bothered about looking an idiot, particularly - I have little dignity at the best of times.

Not sweating and being recognisable would basically do me. Any suggestions gratefully received!

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 21/02/2018 20:24

My sister went as the Trunchbull. She looked fab

Lovestonap · 21/02/2018 20:27

Yeah, trunchbull was my first thought - practical too!

RollTopBath · 21/02/2018 20:28

Is there a theme?

meredintofpandiculation · 21/02/2018 20:29

Nanny Ogg?

Autumnsparkles · 21/02/2018 20:30

Trunchbull also my first thought

Backenette · 21/02/2018 20:32

Go as Thursday Next :) minimal costume required, although a stuffed dodo would be a nice touch

BlessYourCottonSocks · 21/02/2018 20:33

Well I thought of Trunchbull vaguely - but didn't she wear a sort of heavy looking suit thing? I thought I'd be too hot.

She wore a suit with pull up socks from memory so the bare legs should help keep you a little cool.

I once went as Jack's mum from Jack and the Beanstalk when I was a Y5 teacher. Longish dress, apron, mob cap. I made MISSING posters as Jack had disappeared up the beanstalk, and went round asking pepole if they'd seen him. The kids loved it. Also at different times I've been Mr Magnolia, Professor McGonagal, the Tin Man, the Mad Hatter, Meg and Mog (with a stuffed cat). Take a bicycle and dress eccentrically and be Mrs. Armitage on Wheels??

Elle8989 · 21/02/2018 20:45

Could you be in harry potter uniform? Or one of the teachers.

Umm I'm not sure but intrigued to see what you choose.

AbsolutelyCorking · 21/02/2018 20:51

Wilma Flintstone? One shouldered white dress with pearl necklace?

Redtartanshoes · 21/02/2018 20:52

Demon Dentist?

Blankiefan · 21/02/2018 20:53

Cat in the hat? Black trousers, black t-shirt. Eye liner cat face.

Buy or make a red-and-white-cat-in-the-hat hat - loads of tips on Pinterest.

Some great ideas here folks! Keep them coming, please.

Dh went as gangsta granny last year. You can buy the costume on Amazon and just wear your own long skirt. Dh wore a size 18 skirt I found in a charity shop.

Paper bag princess - black leggings Andy shirt with a sack over the top plus tiara

KeiraTwiceKnightley · 21/02/2018 21:47

Sorry - more to come.

Lady Macbeth - long dress/dressing gown , crown, hands face painted red

Curleys wife - cotton dress, red shoes, lippy

Daisy from Gatsby - flapper outfit. Or Jordan - wide legged trousers, shirt, string of beads.

BlessYourCottonSocks · 21/02/2018 21:52

Some brilliant ideas, guys! Peanut I've been Mary Poppins a couple of years ago (when much thinner!) Colleague was Lady M last year - and another one was the mad wife in the attic from Jane Eyre, or I could have done that!

Loving some of these....

A character from the Divergent series? Something grey and baggy/tatty looking for Abnegation or go black-clad with punky hair and tattoos for Dauntless can't remember the other factions
