A man just shouted at me in the street

“Why are you wearing a curtain?”

I kind of smiled awkwardly and carried on crossing the road to him shouting “oi, you, I’m talking to you!”

I was absolutely mortified, lots of people were watching but no one said anything.

Why do people do this? He seemed like a “normal person” and it was really intimidating. He turned back to look and I thought he was going to start following me. Has anyone ever had weird random things shouted at them in the street, or is it just me Hmm

For the record I was wearing a stripy maxi dress as I was on my way to get a spray tan. Really wish I’d had a witty comeback.

Ginger that’s brilliant!

Flowerfae · 21/02/2018 22:18

My friend was walking along once carrying a violin and some builder shouted across the street to her 'y'alright love? fancy a fiddle?'' she just stuck her middle finger up at them ... it was quite funny though.

I've been called a fat ugly c* and spat at ... once, by some charming individual when I was visiting my sister in liverpool. That is the only time I've experienced something like that.

I've never seen/heard of women doing that though... maybe sometimes if they have been drinking and getting nasty .. but just randomly in the street I haven't.

My 8year old daughter was walking home from school today when a taxi driver drove past her and thrust his tongue between his index and middle finger aiming at her, think emulating cunnilingus. She has no idea what it meant but she felt extremely uncomfortable with it. She was three doors away from our house, the school is literally across the road, hence walking herself as I can see her. What does it say to a child when we have to teach self preservation methods from grown men in cars? It’s more than just stranger danger. It’s bad enough and totally unacceptable as an adult but doing it to a young child takes it to a whole new level of wrong. I didn’t see it happen and loads of cars pass at that time so stupidly paid no attention. Without details police were not interested :( I won’t be letting her walk to school herself for quite a while from now on. I’m sad we have to modify our behaviour because of this kind of fuckwit. So very angry today.

Bloopbleep · 21/02/2018 22:20

I should add just to fit in, she too is a redhead.

Flowerfae · 21/02/2018 22:21

Bloopbleep do you think your daughter would remember what the taxi looked like? because I think the police would be interested in that.

gingergenius · 21/02/2018 22:21

Jesus @Bloopbleep did you get his registration?

Spudlet · 21/02/2018 22:22

Bloop Angry Sad

You'd call someone like that a pig, but pigs are far too intelligent for such a comparison. Your poor dd.

Flowerfae · 21/02/2018 22:22

sorry saw that they said they were not interested, but taxi firms are usually are quite distinctive. So they should at least go and talk to the firms owners

GlitterBurps · 21/02/2018 22:25

Has happened a lot sadly but the most memorable are:
Aged 13- ‘keep your legs closed I can smell the fish from here’ shouted at me from the top of a double decker by random man.
Few months later, sitting at bus stop- ‘show me your knickers’ from van man.

Similar to a PP have also been told to Fuck off home P**i I’m also born here and white.

Got called a slag when pregnant with DS1.

Dallia · 21/02/2018 22:25

Ginger I’ll remember that response for future fuckwits.

Bloop I’m so sorry that happened to your DD, I’ve had similar happen around that age and it makes you feel weird when you don’t quite know what it means, but my mum always made me feel better, which I’m sure you have done too.Flowers

Walking along with XH, white van man shouts to him, "Oy mate, your wife's going grey!" Well, yes, I was 38, and got my first grey hair when I was 23. Hmm

MrsDilber · 21/02/2018 22:30

How rude!

waterlego6064 · 21/02/2018 22:34

Bloopbleep, A man behind the counter in a shop made that exact same gesture at my DD when she was 10.

Mythologies · 21/02/2018 22:35

I am sure most of you know about this - but the everyday sexism project collects all our stories

Notasunnybunny · 21/02/2018 22:36

In some men’s weird worlds this was a chat up line

Meandmy4 · 21/02/2018 22:37

gingergenius · 21/02/2018 22:37

@Mythologies that's interesting

KERALA1 · 21/02/2018 22:38

The ingrained misogyny is the view that women aren't really people we are just a sex class. That's where all this seeps from. I cannot imagine any circumstance in which I would shout sexualised abuse at a stranger going about their business, especially a young lad. Can any of us?

MrsKoala · 21/02/2018 22:40

When I was 9 a man told me he wanted to come in my mouth. I didn’t know what it meant so told my mum. She said it was rude and not to repeat it.

AlpacaLypse · 21/02/2018 22:40

@UpABitLate yy I have had this conversation with my DP too. He had absolutely no idea that being beeped at as you walk along a pavement is a way to get a girl to turn around so suggestive remarks can be yelled through the window as spotty oiks through to fat bastard old gits can have their 'fun'. Now that we have teenage dds he's busy worrying himself sick.

BetterEatCheese · 21/02/2018 22:41

I was once shouted at on a bus by a lady - 'look at her reading, reading her bloody book, look at her, bloody books'

I was a teenager and mortified! The lady did shout at everyone in our area and was clearly unwell but it was horrible!

Dallia · 21/02/2018 22:42

Thanks mythologies I hadn’t actually heard of that. Now following.

BetterEatCheese · 21/02/2018 22:42

Oh and also 'look at the tits on that!'

flightchecker · 21/02/2018 22:43

Lunchtime today I was walking back to the office and greeted a colleague coming the other way with a smile and quick chat as we passed.

Bloke walking behind her then saw fit to abuse me for not doing the same to him. Never seen him before.

It's so much bloody effort to ignore it all isn't it Sad

Mythologies · 21/02/2018 22:44

Dallia cool :)
