A man just shouted at me in the street

“Why are you wearing a curtain?”

I kind of smiled awkwardly and carried on crossing the road to him shouting “oi, you, I’m talking to you!”

I was absolutely mortified, lots of people were watching but no one said anything.

Why do people do this? He seemed like a “normal person” and it was really intimidating. He turned back to look and I thought he was going to start following me. Has anyone ever had weird random things shouted at them in the street, or is it just me Hmm

For the record I was wearing a stripy maxi dress as I was on my way to get a spray tan. Really wish I’d had a witty comeback.

Some young men wound their window down and threw the remains of their milkshake at me recently. They shouted something but I didn't quite catch it, probably because my hearing's not what it was now I'm getting on a bit.

There were plenty of men about, but they targeted me, a retired woman. Makes you think.

MrsKoala · 21/02/2018 22:50

I can’t imagine a time when I would even notice a stranger let alone care enough to shout at them. The sexual comments piss me off. But the observational ones are equally offensive. It’s pure arrogance that some men feel entitled to blurt out any thought they should have and we should be grateful for it. Then the rage when we don’t react in the way they want us to. Life must be very strange and frustrating for them. Yet they never think it’s them being odd, it’s obviously all us grumpy lezzers who can’t take s joke.

SockEatingMonster · 21/02/2018 22:51

women aren't really people we are just a sex class

I think the media we consume, books, tv, films, the lot, are a big part of this problem. Our men and boys are fed a steady diet of women as decorative commodities to be awarded as prizes to deserving menfolk. Just look at the films many of us grew up with in the 80s most of which involved a geeky boy and a Hot Girl whose only purpose was to be coveted and acquired.

Hotdoggity · 21/02/2018 22:53

We had a great one when we first started dating.

What the fuck is he doing with her?
Other girl: Don’t you mean the other way round?

So DH and I both felt like shit simultaneously!

littlebillie · 21/02/2018 22:58

Ha I was discussing I had given up sugar and lost weight, I was asked if I shagging a new fella. The enquiry came from my boss 🙄 male btw in case you wondered....

rightknockered · 21/02/2018 22:59

This is why I drive everywhere. I never use the local shops, I drive to a large supermarket. I get anxious walking up the street. The last time I went for a walk was to the postoffice, a man jogging past me made a kissing sound, at least three times cars slowed down and men shouted crap at me through open windows, was horrendous. I just can't walk anywhere now.

Carouselfish · 21/02/2018 23:01

Something about their mother is a good one if it's a sexual comment/ about tits. 'Yeah? Your mother's got them too. Like it if some twat shouted that at her?'

alarox · 21/02/2018 23:01

Too many incidents to count. Always men.

Aged 13 I was walking down the street and was literally picked up by a bloke and put down in a closed shop doorway. He blocked me in until I gave him my (wrong) number. Told him my age. He said he'd pick me up from school tomorrow and we'd go back to his.

Had my fuckability rated loudly on a number of occasions over the years. Most memorably when I dragged myself to the corner shop to buy flu remedies. I'd lost my voice so couldn't tell the men behind me in the queue to go fuck themselves.

Usual builders/van drivers requesting me to sit on their face/show them my tits yawn

Had a man cycle alongside me as I walked down a city centre, hissing at me "give me your fucking number then you fucking frigid bitch" repeatedly. Ran into a shop to shake him off.

It wears you down. Fucking wankers.

rightknockered · 21/02/2018 23:01

Pisses me off. I miss walking

xotyl · 21/02/2018 23:03

So bloody angry reading this. Can we do something? Maybe if called at by someone in a work van, lorry or building site report them to their employers. Name and shame companies who don't take this abuse seriously.

I once got called a fat ugly bitch whilst sitting outside a pub waiting for dp to come out with the drinks. They were three boys on push bikes no more than 12yo. ( I'm not a bitch, neither fat or ugly ) did get hissed at by an elderly woman in M&S foodhall, she hissed "hussy" at me and gave me a vile look. Just wearing jeans and tshirt. Am another redhead btw.

Hotdoggity · 21/02/2018 23:04

A guy once told me I was the most beautiful woman bla bla and asked me for a cuddle. He was close and I thought he might be dangerous so I was nice.

rightknockered · 21/02/2018 23:05

A few weeks ago, the water company was digging up the entire road. The men working outside, would say 'morning' to me when they saw me. I tried to tell myself they were being friendly because they recognised me. I pushed past the anxiety to return the cheery greeting. On the last day, they changed it to 'morning sexy' and when I didn't respond 'slag'. Always going to ignore from now on.

littlebillie · 21/02/2018 23:06

I was following my dh through a bar and some random male decided to step in front of me and squeezed my boob. He stood there grinning like he had done me a favour.

I slapped him soundly across the face and then slapped the bottom of his pint glass and it covered him in beer. I stalked off after dh. Later the slapped beer sodden idiot asked me for my number

What goes through their heads

BloodyMarie · 21/02/2018 23:09

I was once stood with dd1 in her pushchair, looking in an estate agents window. A van pulled up and the man leaned out of the passenger window and shouted 'why are you pretending you can afford to buy a house, when you are wearing shoes like that?'

Alrighty then 🤔

newcarsmell · 21/02/2018 23:11

I always hate hate walking past those people in malls or streets that have a stand set up to collect/get you to sign up for charity. It's fine when they're women but I know without fail that when it's a guy and I say no sorry or ignore and keep walking they will yell something nasty after me.
I've reported quite a few of them to their employer/charity.
It's fucking bizarre. I can see your name tag and who you are associated with!! I've even had them say stuff to my son. Last time I walked right up to him with my phone and took a photo of his name tag. Cunt.

Flobalob · 21/02/2018 23:13

I think that people who do this either have some form of mental illness or disability.

If they don't fit into that category, I assume it's because they haven't got much going on up top. You've got to pity them really.

Unhurried · 21/02/2018 23:13

Aged 16 I was called a "gum chewing cunt" by a man, shouted it across the street at me. Although he was clearly a nutter, I remember it vividly - it was over 40 years ago.......

mamasiz · 21/02/2018 23:14

Walking to the corner shop for cat food - no makeup, unwasged hair and scrappy jeans and tshirt on a Sunday morning in Nottingham. I went to overtake a group of boys, probably in their late teens. I steered myself for some comment or other as that kind of thing was happening to me quite regularly at that time for some reason. As anticipated, one of them leaned towards me as I passed and asked me for ‘the quickest way to my pants’. No idea where this cane from but I just sighed wearily, told him I could tell him the directions but he wouldn’t know what to do when he got there. His mates fell about laughing, at me or him or both I couldn’t tell. The sad look on his ugly face was bloody priceless. Dickhead.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/02/2018 23:15

Good for you Billie. The dirty sleazeball.
I hope that taught him.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/02/2018 23:16

Mama. Grin.

alarox · 21/02/2018 23:17

Forgot the most shocking and most recent one: last summer walking home one evening, a small boy shouted at me to show him my "milky tits" Shock Replied he shouldn't talk to people like that. He told me to fuck off! Where the hell did he learn that behaviour?! Not much surprises me any more, but being street harassed by an infant.... Fucking depressing

gingergenius · 21/02/2018 23:18

I had a lad in a group of lads stub out his cigarette on my coat as he walked past me. I was about 12 - he and his mates were 16/17ish. I was waiting for a lift home from horse riding. I was terrified.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 21/02/2018 23:19

Maybe other posters have had different experiences, but this happened to me frequently in the UK, never in Germany where I now live. Is it an English speaking phenomenon?

gingergenius · 21/02/2018 23:20

No. Some of the stuff happened to me in Italy, and Malta

luckyfucky · 21/02/2018 23:21

Have had deal with this shit since I was a young girl. Always been large chested and usually been shouted/leered at due to this, heard every tits insult under the sunHmm

One that sticks with me though was something that happened on my hen weekend. I was standing outside a pub giving my dp a quick call when a group of about 10 guys walked past and one loudly shouted "was going to go in there til I saw that fat pig" as he pointed at me (no one else about) and they all laughed and walked on. I was so taken aback and upset that I never told anyone what had happened. I had been feeling great, hair and makeup done, lost some weight, new clothes etc and my confidence was shattered in that instant. That was about 20 years ago and it still stings. Scumbag.
