A man just shouted at me in the street

“Why are you wearing a curtain?”

I kind of smiled awkwardly and carried on crossing the road to him shouting “oi, you, I’m talking to you!”

I was absolutely mortified, lots of people were watching but no one said anything.

Why do people do this? He seemed like a “normal person” and it was really intimidating. He turned back to look and I thought he was going to start following me. Has anyone ever had weird random things shouted at them in the street, or is it just me Hmm

For the record I was wearing a stripy maxi dress as I was on my way to get a spray tan. Really wish I’d had a witty comeback.

Brilliant Ultra.

A medic at university was flashed at in the park and she stopped, examined, told the perpetrator it was rather small and he had early stages of some made up awful sounding disease. He scuttled off.

PoisonousSmurf · 22/02/2018 09:28

I used to like running, but not along roads as there was always a twat wanting to pass comment. I used to carry a couple of rocks in my hand
ready to throw and one day I managed to chuck one at a rude van driver, but it only hit the side of the van.
Don't think he even noticed, but I was ready to hide if he turned around!

gingergenius · 22/02/2018 09:29

@KERALA1 brilliant. Or you could go for "awwwwww bless...I've never seen one that small!"

And walk off

PoisonousSmurf · 22/02/2018 09:34

SaddieHH, What a vile man! If that had happened to me I'd have egged his house a few weeks later and then done some other stuff.

KERALA1 · 22/02/2018 09:36

And the trans thing - people not understanding why women need their own spaces. Just read the thread thats bloody why Hmm its not a "transphobic" thing.

BeHappyMummy · 22/02/2018 09:39

I think every women and girl should enroll on a self defense class.

The predators like those who they don't think will fight back and this is where I think men have an advantage with their physical strength.

BeHappyMummy · 22/02/2018 09:40

kalinka

And wipe out the human race?

PoisonousSmurf · 22/02/2018 09:42

A planet of women and only a few men. Kept as slaves. Reverse of this world.

ginch · 22/02/2018 09:44

Of course we worry about our children, I was amazed when my adult daughter said that strange men in pubs and clubs often knew her.

"You used to go to ..... school, I used to watch you from the bus every morning" was a typical remark, from someone considerably older.

Our young daughters are constantly being watched and assessed by every passing male. Horrible and unstoppable.

BeHappyMummy · 22/02/2018 09:45

only a few men. Kept as slaves

Until they turn on you and re-dominate the world.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 22/02/2018 09:46

Maureen Lipman came out with a good one on Radio 4.

Builder: "Tiny tits!"

Maureen: "Well, at least I haven't got 2 raisins and a drawing pin."

😂

KERALA1 · 22/02/2018 09:48

Its not the odd outlying predator though is it? Hmm. Its fucking endemic so it is loads of them. I know people whine "NAMALT" but seems the decent ones are the minority rather than the majority.

And how does it happen? Looking at DD2s gorgeous 8 year old little boy pals from decent parents. Will they stay lovely? What turns them?

PoisonousSmurf · 22/02/2018 09:51

But why would we let them behappymummy? All girls and women should know self defence. Especially Krav Maga.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 22/02/2018 09:53

Lolla I've had "black bastard" graffiti on my front door. I, too, am white British. Confused

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 22/02/2018 09:55

Sorry, that was to Accidentally.

WhatInTheWorldIsGoingOn · 22/02/2018 10:00

My standard response is, “shouting at me won’t make up for your tiny penis.” I also have an amazing teacher death stare which says so many things without words.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 22/02/2018 10:09

it's a bit like a penis only smaller. 😂😂😂😂😂

SockEatingMonster · 22/02/2018 10:14

I will admit to the occasional fantasy about women-only communities, but obviously it's no real answer.

I don't think the problem is men as a sex category, it's what our society shapes them into. The problem is men as a gender and the highly exaggerated displays of masculinity we attach to being A Man. I think we have done a good job teaching our girls that it's ok for them to have and display traits that are traditionally seen as masculine (like ambition, sportiness and competitiveness) but a much poorer job convincing our boys to display traditionally feminine traits (caring, empathy, displaying/sharing emotions, displaying weakness and asking for help, etc). Society is still structured to celebrate strength and regards 'feminine' traits (whether displayed by men or women) as weakness.

I actually have a whole lot of sympathy for the majority of 'normal' trans women (the silent majority), many of whom are prepared to undergo major surgery to escape our society's particularly toxic brand of masculinity. Yes, it would be better if they could display their feminine side without having to appropriate our biology and language, but I can't blame individual trans women for choosing the path of least resistance.

Yes, I've been out with my then 5 year old in his wheelchair and men shouting at us, calling him a "cripple". Various other abusive comments, mostly aimed at him. He's 9 now and already worked out that if he goes out with me he will get shouted at but if he goes out with dh he won't.

grannytomine · 22/02/2018 10:26

A planet of women and only a few men. I had ginger hair and have freckles. I've only had abuse once for hair and twice for freckles. Once a prisoner in a G4 van on his way to the local prison shouted abuse at me about my freckles. The other was on a train where two young people were abusive about my hair and freckles. They were teenage girls. It was very embarrassing, I just ignored them. So I'm not sure if a world without men would stop it, reduce it but not stop it.

rougebuterfly · 22/02/2018 10:28

We use to have bloke come in and water our plants at work and he once walked straight up to my desk and ask me if would consider wearing a nurses uniform for himShock as he could see me wearing one...

Bluntness100 · 22/02/2018 10:32

I think a lot of the problem is it's seen as acceptable behaviour for men to shout abuse at women in the street. Other men often find it comical and as women we try to ignore it often because uou cant risk engaging and making it worse. It is a display of masculine superiority to these arseholes. They are behaving with bravado and showing they are superior in their minds to the random woman they are abusing.

It's one thing when you get a group of lads doing it and egging each other on and laughing. It's something else entirely when it's a lone adult Male who stops to do it as he's going about his business You just wonder what the fuck is wrong with them mentally.

I'm guessing they don't go home and tell their wives they were shouting fat slag or nice tits at random women in the street when they get home.

thetemptationofchocolate · 22/02/2018 10:36

I quite like this film from Peru

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 22/02/2018 10:37

chirpyburby I have very short hair, so I'd have come back with, "that's a coincidence, I don't like arseholes."
