To ask what your ideal job would be

I started another post saying I'm unhappy with my job and was just thinking what job I'd love to do in an ideal world. One thing would be to own a lovely little gift shop just selling cards and pretty things with a seating area serving tea, coffee and cakes, sandwiches etc. How about you?

I always wanted to be an author. I really wish I could get something published but I don't t think I've written anything worth publishing.

YouBetterWORK · 20/02/2018 21:54

Working in events; I love planning all that kind of stuff, researching details and pricing then sorting itineraries and watching it all come together. I would love to be part of a team that makes all the magic happen behind the scenes.

I did try and get into it after uni but never happened. The job I have now is ok, and I've been in it long enough to earn a good wage. Any thought about an event planning career now would mean a hell of a wage drop because I'd be entry level.

LemonysSnicket · 20/02/2018 21:56

I would be paid to read and review books.
Nearly there lol 😁

pinkduckblueduck · 20/02/2018 21:56

@NewYearNiki I haven't changed my mind. People can have more than one reason for not pursuing a career. If you must know my reasons are:

  1. It is very difficult to get a training contract.
  2. I would probably have to self fund the LPC (about 12k). 3)People like you.
  3. I have a serious illness and being around people like you does not help. Btw I do have a job and you sound truly lovely. I feel sorry for whoever works for you though Wink.
LemonysSnicket · 20/02/2018 22:01

Or yes, a bridal shop owner.

PancakeInMaBelly · 20/02/2018 22:04

I would love to be able to create things. Like an engineer or archetect or master builder or black smith.

Making things of use and beauty and inginuity

I have zero useful creative or engineering skills though so its not looking hopeful...

Windmyonlyfriend · 20/02/2018 22:06

I’d love to run a sustainable, zero plastic food shop and cafe, with a vegan menu so good that even committed omnivores love eating there 🌱🌲🌾🌎

otherdoor · 20/02/2018 22:06

newyearniki actually the British word is "practising".

By the way, you also shouldn't end a sentence with "to".

A whole new level of pedantry to which you can aspire...

pinkduckblueduck · 20/02/2018 22:08

@otherdoor Grin or putting the apostrophe in can't would be a start!

Sparklesocks · 20/02/2018 22:10

I’d love to be a screenwriter, or run a charity that really helped people at a grassroots level and made a difference in people’s lives. If I was massively wealthy I’d buy a huge mansion and turn it into a women’s shelter.

midnightmisssuki · 20/02/2018 22:10

DJ. Sad

anyoldname76 · 20/02/2018 22:13

i would have my own wool and craft shop, i would pay local crafty people to run courses/demos, i would also like it to have its own coffee shop section with squishy sofas and craft mags to read

NewYearNiki · 20/02/2018 22:13

@otherdoor

I dumbed it down for the poor dear who says no jobs exist in law when she simply cannot get one.

silkpyjamasallday · 20/02/2018 22:14

I'd like to run a shop selling lovely rugs, ceramics, furniture, artwork and decorative objects that I would collect on sourcing trips to far flung places. The shop would have to be closed for long periods of the year while I found the things, but hopefully that would make it seem more exclusive and I could justify prices to cover my travels. I wouldn't have it set up like a shop but as a home, with a little kitchen so I can serve tea and coffee to customers while they browse.

NewYearNiki · 20/02/2018 22:14

or putting the apostrophe in can't would be a start!

Go and get a training contract. Oh dear, you can't.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

TossDaily · 20/02/2018 22:18

Blimey, NewYearNiki, you're certainly doing your bit to uphold the reputation of lawyers...

Sparklesocks · 20/02/2018 22:20

NewYearNiki I think you’re being a bit harsh here

mcgoogleismename · 20/02/2018 22:25

A choreographer for musicals. Failing that, I would love to be an interior designer.

VioletCharlotte · 20/02/2018 22:25

I'd leave to be a holistic therapist or yoga teacher.

beepthemeep · 20/02/2018 22:26

Niki is making me ashamed of my career choice too! Absolutely no need to be so bitchy to someone.

Pink - there are other ways of doing it, as I'm sure you know. I have several friends who've done their LPCs whilst working inhouse (you have to be seconded for a 6 month litigation seat) or there are routes like ILEX?

And nooo, dealing with clients is the fun bit. Drafting contracts sucks Grin

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 20/02/2018 22:27

Web designer for some quirky, off the wall company.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 20/02/2018 22:33

I work for myself, doing my dream job. I'm lucky to have the right skills for it, but I had to make it happen and I try to push myself all the time.

ItsNachoCheese · 20/02/2018 22:34

My dream job is a dogsitter as i love dogs and i feel a lot more safe around them than people. I have found having my own gorgeous dog has helped my mh issues considerably

FourEyesGood · 20/02/2018 22:34

DJ/presenter on 6 Music.

RaindropsAndSparkles · 20/02/2018 22:35

Once upon a time I thought I'd like to be an HR Director. Then I had a career for 16 years in Financial Services which i fell into aged 21.

Years and children later i still fancied HR so started at the bottom after an 8 year break.

Am now the HR Director (large organisation). Dream job is the same with a good deputy so I can work 45/50 hours pw rather than 60/70 Grin
