2yo drank persil

Just got in from long journey home from weekend away. Was getting DSs supper ready, turned round to find him drinking from the persil bottle he had got from the recycling.

I'm waiting for NHS direct to call me back, but thought someone here may know what to do?

awank - I hope all is OK for DS

UPDATE - DS is fine.

We rang 111, and were awaiting a call back. DH also rang 2 of our friends, a GP and a hospital pharmacist. Both said not to worry liquitabs are immediate a&e, normal liquid is a&e if in eyes or if symptomatic (ulcers, redness, burns, rash, vomitting or diarrhoea or difficulty breathing). Whilst DS was on the phone I posted on mum's net.

The bottle was in the recycling, empty and having had sluice out, but with some sticky bits round the rim, the amount ingested would have been tiny. If it had some in, I'd have taken him to hospital immediately.

111 called us back within 35 minutes. A pharmacist went through the exact product and it's ingredients and confirmed that unless symptomatic he didn't need to go to hospital.

He slept in bed with us last night so we could keep an eye on him.

All cleaning products are locked away normally, and from now on, any ones for recycling will be going straight in the outside bin!

I went in to work this morning and reported the incident to my manager (I'm a social worker!).

Glad to hear he's fine and you sound like a lovely Mum.

skylary · 19/02/2018 14:20

Good to hear op Smile

Aridane · 19/02/2018 14:34

Thanks for updating

ArgosTheDog · 19/02/2018 14:40

that's great to hear OP.

Just out of curiosity though - why would you have to report it to your work, social worker or not? Is it a condition of your job that you report it?

Accidents happen...even to social workers I suspect!

awankstainonhumanity · 19/02/2018 14:57

Yes, accidents happen. But I just let my boss know, better than it being brought up another time.

MollyHuaCha · 19/02/2018 15:31

SersioulycanitgetWORSE · 19/02/2018 16:32

Agree accident totally happen glad he's OK op. I would have been worried about collected residue at the bottom of the bottle and burning in his mouth.

TinaMena · 19/02/2018 18:48

But I just let my boss know
What's it got to do with your boss?

Mummyontherun86 · 19/02/2018 19:02

Glad he’s okay.

No one would ever fault a parent taking a child to a+e in a situation like this. Failing to take a child however would justify criticism.

I wouldn’t take my child in a situation like this. But i am toxicology trained.

The take home from this thread is 99.9% of the “advice” is utter bollocks. Making kids sick, anecdotes about completely different products, it being horribly caustic, do x, no don’t you need to do y.

Bottom line is any doubt phone 111 or seek other medical advice.

I often think it would be good to have a poison control service like they do in the usa or other countries. But it won’t be nhs funded- they’ve already “streamlined” the service medical professionals had access to.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 19/02/2018 19:38

Glad your son is okay, you must be emotionally drained all that worry

Icklepickle101 · 19/02/2018 19:41

Glad to hear he is okay.

DS ate a powerball dishwasher tablet once and the phone call from the poison centre gave me great confidence lots of children consume all sorts of dangerous substances and turn out on!

GrannyGrissle · 19/02/2018 19:45

Alicewhiting you win for foulest child ever Grin friend's daughter ate a cat turd out the litter tray but this! Fuck! As you were.

AliceWhiting · 20/02/2018 10:42

This is why I am still traumatised so many years later, GrannyGrissle. Mine have all ingested unpleasant things, but that one took the Biscuit.
