To think I’m not a weirdo for wanting a non-wired bra!

I’ve finally finished feeding my last child! I want pretty new bras to celebrate after years of ugly, washed out feeding bras. After all these years wearing feeding/maternity bras, I can’t abide wiring of any sort! With this in mind I took myself off to my nearest M&S today to see what they had. I had measured myself beforehand as I don’t like the way M&S does it.

I was happily browsing when lady came up and asked if I needed any help. I asked if that was all they had in non wired as they were really old fashioned looking. At that she looked me up and down and said that younger ladies like me (I’m late 30’s) usually wear “normal bras” and they only sold those kind to older ladies.

I felt really self conscious after this and didn’t really want to stand there explaining things to her and muttered that it was ok I’d leave it. Nope she was off on a crusade to prove to me I really wanted a wired bra and asked my size, I told her she told me she didn’t think so, I stood my ground on this. So anyway I was handed about 5 bras to try. In the end I hung them back up whilst her back was turned and left. I’m ordering online from now on, I don’t care if I have to send them all back if it means I avoid an experience like that again!

AIBU for not liking wired bras? Also AIBVU for actually wanting non wired ones to be pretty?

Good luck on your quest OP. There's a lot more choice in bras out there now than even a few years ago.
I did try taking the wire out of a couple of bras and found it didn't really work well. You need one that has been designed to work without wire in the first place.

scaryteacher · 18/02/2018 10:12

Originuser I second, third and fourth Primadonna. I'm about to invest in my third set of these bras. I love them. The only downside this time is that I live in Belgium, so haven't yet been fitted here. The bra shop I used to go to in Devon has closed down, so need to find somewhere else.

Aeroflotgirl · 18/02/2018 10:17

I think it depends what you want out of a soft cup bra, I like them to look sexy, and like the lace, but if that's not your thing, fair enough. I like that quality of Bravissimo and John Lewis, they really last long and are very supportive, so just tend to stick to them. That is important if you have big boobs, if I dident, and was blessed with A-C cups I would be getting the cheaper bras.

I'm 28 and haven't worn a wired bra in a good few years and I'm not a weirdo!
I got some nice ones from intimissi -

Not sure where you are based. I'm central London and they have lots of stores but you can order online too! X

EeeSheWasThin · 18/02/2018 10:24

I like these from John Lewis but I’m quite small of boob so can’t comment on support if you’re larger.

They have a formed cup inside the material, I find them very comfortable. I did try one of those lace bralettes they have and just sagged completely.

M&S bras are pants 😂😂😂

pringlecat · 18/02/2018 10:27

If you're really a FF, why are you shopping in M&S? Get thee to Bravissimo!

I tried a few non-wired bras the other day and I hated them so much. I can understand why some women might find them more comfortable, but I didn't. And I hated the way my breasts looked in them. Didn't feel right to me.

I walked out of the shop in a lovely, comfy wired bra but the moral of the story is that Bravissimo do sell non-wired and well as wired bras, so if you are top heavy, they will have a bra for you.

M&S are terrible. They kept trying to fit me in a 36C. I'm a 32GG.

Neverender · 18/02/2018 10:46

Love PINK - have a look. Seems like it's only for the young but they're so comfortable and bright. I'm never buying mine from anywhere else again.

Check this out. The Triumph and Beja Fllor look good for larger cups:

Molkes are definitely supportive I'm a 34L and wear a medium mega Molke. My boobs are hoiked and in place with cleavage far more than any underwired bra and they don't rub or give me double boob (34L is an impossible size). I was sceptical esp when I got one and couldn't get it on at first (there's a nack to it) but now I have 5 and I don't wear my old bras now.

BuffysFavouriteStake · 18/02/2018 11:15

YANBU, wired bras are the invention of the devil! Have never found a comfortable one even when measured (mind you, got measured in m&s, clearly that was my first mistake).

Been wearing sports bras, but now starting to need more uplift and support, so thanks to op for this thread and all the recommendations, might go and treat myself Grin

OriginalGeordie · 18/02/2018 11:20

Thanks everyone, now I’m scratching the surface I’m finding loads of lovely things. Am tempted to order a Uniqlo bra and trying it round the house. Have also found that Freya is releasing this bralette shortly, so may try that.

Just to mention about taking the wires out, I find the bra is an odd shape as the have been stitched around having wires in.

BuffysFavouriteStake Never M&S. Never M&S!

OriginalGeordie I would hate to wear these, but they might work for you? If you haven't been fitted in the last six months and/or you've gained/lost weight in the last few months, do get a fitting in person first.

FWIW, I ordered a bra online that kinda fitted. I always try in store (click and collect) before I take home. Asked one of the Bravissimo ladies for her opinion before I left with it. She looked me up and down and said, "I want to try you in the cup size up with this bra." She was right. Going up one cup size made all the different from kinda fitting to fitting perfectly. I really can't gush enough about Bravissimo. It's been an absolute life changer.

OriginalGeordie · 18/02/2018 12:15

Thanks pringle I think I’ll skip the panache Sophie as I had that style in a nursing bra!!! Will try the Fantasie one as I’m currently wearing their Elodie bra and although it’s wired, it’s actually more comfortable than most!

Cake lingerie do great unwired bras - really supportive (especially for large breasts). Technically a maternity brand, but would be great for any purpose.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 18/02/2018 21:59

Ooo bravissimo have some nice non wired bra for bigger ladies: https://www.bravissimo.com/collections/non-wired-bras/

Am totally going to try some! Grin

SandyY2K · 18/02/2018 22:04

I can't wear underwired bras. I end up with lumps in my underarms ...unless I just wear it for a couple of hours.

I like the idea of removing the wires though. Didn't think of that.

PsychoPumpkin · 18/02/2018 22:15

I’m not even remotely bothered about style in a bra. I’m 26 and haven’t worn a wired bra since I had my first child at 18.

I’ve just bought 12 of those ahh bra type things in bright colours and they are heaven! No lace, no adjustable straps, no reaching round your back to fasten them, just... comfort!

Best of all, no trips to M&S!

OriginalGeordie · 07/03/2018 19:32

Just revisiting my original thread. I tried quite a few of the suggestions on this thread but have been really struggling with blocked milk ducts and the only thing I can bear to wear at present are the M&S £9.50 bralets for fuller busts. Absolutely amazing for the price, such a shame they only do them in three colours, I would buy more if I could!
