Trump Talk: or, Lift every voice and sing

It's Black History Month and the fight goes on (plus, we all need a boost that does not come from ye olde hop flask).

Lift every voice and sing

Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us.

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;

Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,

Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years,

God of our silent tears,
Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who hast by Thy might

Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,

May we forever stand.

True to our God,
True to our native land.

James Weldon Johnson (1900)

With Gates turned state evidence Manafort will plead soon. He will give up Trump, Kushner & Trump jr for a deal. Mueller’s Money laundering end game could come as fast in 60-90 days. Does not mean impeachment but will open up Trump’s tax returns.

cozietoesie · 18/02/2018 22:25

I think that that's optimistic. (Doesn't mean untrue of course - the more people who are indicted or plead.............)

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 18/02/2018 22:50

I was thinking back to when manafort and co were first indicted and were all fighting back defiantly, and how frightened I was that it didn't mean they were short sighted idiots but that perhaps they knew more about how they would not be held to account, be it because mueller would be fired or they would be pardoned or trump would erode all checks and balances and become a tyrant. The more dominos that fall, the more I allow myself to believe that they were just short sighted idiots. However, just as my inner Pollyanna was on full blast, the emotional rollercoaster took another plunge when I read this article. You're tight that it's probably a good idea to be cautious.

In a democracy, we don't ask for, or wait for, saviors. We create our own salvation—or we fail to. That is the very essence of the project. Institutions won't save us. The question is whether we will save them. My thoughts on @qjurecic's latest:

Institutions can’t save America from Trump

*you're right, not you're tight!

Sadly true, right now! Grin (I wonder how Across is doing? Wink)

cozietoesie · 18/02/2018 23:01

And that's a thought provoking and sobering piece you linked to.

cozietoesie · 18/02/2018 23:03

One thing is clear to me. After the Midterms, it can't be 'business as usual'.

TheClaws · 18/02/2018 23:20

All I can say this morning, after waking up to 10 POTUS tweets (most that didn’t make sense), is OMG.

And why are there not more checks and balances to stop this nonsense occurring? That may be one positive outcome of his presidency: a change in the Constitution to allow a more expedient removal of a clearly unfit President.

Anyway: thehill.com/policy/national-security/374477-gates-plans-to-testify-against-manafort-in-mueller-probe-report

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 18/02/2018 23:28

The students are a good example of not relying on institutions - they’re no even relying on adults - to bring about change. That’s the anaethema to this. The general population taking action and making a stand against the slide to authoritarianism

cozietoesie · 18/02/2018 23:31

I think that there will have to be wider-ranging changes than that, Claws. The fault lines in society that have been so rudely exposed and dealing with the national debt against a background of popular aspirations? Lordy.

Sorry for delay @POTUS. Was on a plane back from Munich where General McMaster confronted Russia over its meddling.

I’ve always said Obama should’ve acted sooner. But you won’t recognize the truth, impose sanctions or act at all. If McMaster can stand up to Putin, why can’t you?

The coming week will be conservatives attacking the teenage survivors of a gun massacre because they're not following the NRAs "shut up and suffer" playbook. We must defend them.

Also, a disappointing stance from the women’s march with regards to the students’ protests. Hopefully they will change direction when they realise it’s a bit divisive

Lockheed Martin got $35,200,000,000 from taxpayers last year.

That’s more than many federal agencies, according to WaPo.

Trump surrogate admits falsifying biographical claims

amp.cnn.com/cnn/2016/09/03/politics/mark-burns-donald-trump-interview/index.html?__twitter_impression=true

(CNN) A top Donald Trump surrogate admitted to falsifying some of his professional accomplishments after a contentious confrontation with CNN anchor Victor Blackwell.

South Carolina preacher Mark Burns, who regularly introduces Trump at his campaign events, had listed on his church's website that he had a Bachelor of Science degree and served six years in the Army Reserve.

Burns, however, was never in the Army Reserve. He was in the South Carolina National Guard, from which he was discharged in 2008, CNN found.

As far as a Bachelor's degree, North Greenville University told CNN he only attended the school for one semester. Burns admitted that he did not finish his degree when CNN asked him about it.

When CNN confronted Burns about the various professional and social exaggerations he had featured on his biography, Burns first said the page had "obviously" been either "manipulated or either hacked or added."

But the site host, Wix, said there was no evidence of a hack.

ginandtonicformeplease · 19/02/2018 08:05

Wouldn’t previous presidents, democrat and republican, have immediately distanced themselves from this, recognising how bad taste it is:

Yup, cos hackers are well known for breaking into people's sites and making minor amendments so they look slightly better. This reminds me of when my daughter was 4 and told me a boy from nursery had got into her room and broken a toy. Hmm
