Trump Talk: or, Lift every voice and sing

lionheart · 17/02/2018 19:58

It's Black History Month and the fight goes on (plus, we all need a boost that does not come from ye olde hop flask).

Lift every voice and sing

Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us.

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;

Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,

Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years,

God of our silent tears,
Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who hast by Thy might

Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,

May we forever stand.

True to our God,
True to our native land.

James Weldon Johnson (1900)

70 years ago today a communist coup destroyed democracy in my native Czechoslovakia. The coup forced my family into exile, and months later we were welcomed as refugees in the USA. Ever since I’ve been a grateful American, and I’ve learned to never take democracy for granted.

'In the year since the 2016 presidential election, one in five perpetrators of hate violence in the United States against various South Asian and Middle Eastern communities invoked President Donald Trump’s name, his administration’s policies or his campaign slogan during the attacks, a new report found.

The nonprofit group South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) released the report last week, which detailed increasing instances of hate violence and xenophobic political rhetoric from Election Day 2016 to Election Day 2017. The group documented more than 300 reported incidents targeting South Asian, Muslim, Sikh, Hindu, Middle Eastern and Arab communities during that period.'

So, let's see. In order to frame things and avoid subjects so Scrotus doesn't perjure himself....hmmm, what to do what to do. Ahhh, got it!

You may ask him;
1-how he's feeling today
and
2-what he had for breakfast

And that is all!

Are we here on this thread the only ones who realize that by simply raising the issue of restricting things so he doesn't perjure himself you are already saying 1-he's done something illegal and/or unethical, and 2-he will lie about it if asked?

Idiots

Well he can at least fly a plane...

Exclusive: Trump privately pushing personal pilot to run FAA

The president’s personal pilot is on the administration's short list to head the Federal Aviation Administration. Trump has told a host of administration officials and associates that he wants John Dunkin — his longtime personal pilot, who flew him around the country on Trump Force One during the campaign — to helm the agency, which has a budget in the billions and which oversees all civil aviation in the United States.

What I'm hearing: One industry insider equated this to the Seinfeld episode when Cosmo Kramer used his golf caddy as a jury consultant. A senior administration official told me that comparison is completely unfair. The source confirmed Trump recommended Dunkin and that he’s sat for an interview for the post. That source said he was impressive.

Kasich ponders end of two-party system

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) said on Sunday that the U.S. might be witnessing the end of the two-party political system.

"We may be beginning to see the end of a two-party system," Kasich said on ABC's "This Week." "I'm starting to really wonder if we are going to see a multiparty system at some point in the future in this country because I don't think either party is answering people's deepest concerns and needs."

Kasich, who appeared alongside Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper (D), said that the Republican Party is his "vehicle," not his "master."

The Republican governor, who mounted an unsuccessful 2016 presidential bid, has been highly critical of President Trump and has reportedly been considering a 2020 run, including a possible challenge to Trump in the Republican primaries.

There was also speculation that Kasich and Hickenlooper could form a bipartisan ticket to run in the 2020 presidential election, but both governors have denied the rumors.

When Kasich, 65, was asked on Sunday if he was more likely to run as an independent or Republican, however, the governor said he's a Republican.

He predicted that 2018 would be a good year for Democrats, but criticized them for not having an agenda.

"I have no clue what they stand for. And we are heading into a midterm election where they are counting on the Republicans bouncing the basketball off of their foot and out of bounds, and they're going to have a decent 2018," Kasich said. "But how can you have a national political party that has no agenda? Just no agenda. And Democrats will tell you that."

Kasich pointed out that the lack of an agenda from both parties could help lead to a multiparty system.

"That's exactly why I'm saying that our young people are fed up and why I'm saying that the prospect of a multiparty system in this country is a real possibility," Kasich said.

Over in the Westministenders thread, there's also been discussion of how the first past the post system means we essentially have a two party system and how it's failing us.

Lweji · 26/02/2018 12:54

The disadvantage of a multiparty system and proportional representation is that it's harder to achieve a majority of over 50%, but if that means parties compromising and discussing issues, then it can only be better for the people they're meant to represent.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 26/02/2018 13:22

I can't remember which European country it was but one of them had the majority party at 18%, the next three at 12% and several others also holding 8-11% each. I though it was Austria but google says no. I'd imagine that's hard to find consensus on decisions but I think I'd take even that over what's going on at the moment (although I'm aware it might be short sightedness born of frustration)

Exclusive: Trump privately talks up executing all big drug dealers

www.axios.com/exclusive-trump-privately-talks-up-executing-all-big-drug-dealers-1519595170-402cc386-8729-4684-a7ef-a5bf31876afa.html?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=twsocialshare&utm_campaign=organic

In Singapore, the death penalty is mandatory for drug trafficking offenses. And President Trump loves it. He’s been telling friends for months that the country’s policy to execute drug traffickers is the reason its drug consumption rates are so low.

"He says that a lot," said a source who's spoken to Trump at length about the subject. "He says, 'When I ask the prime minister of Singapore do they have a drug problem [the prime minister replies,] 'No. Death penalty'."

He often jokes about killing drug dealers... He’ll say, 'You know the Chinese and Filipinos don’t have a drug problem. They just kill them.'
— A senior administration official to Axios

But the president doesn't just joke about it. According to five sources who've spoken with Trump about the subject, he often leaps into a passionate speech about how drug dealers are as bad as serial killers and should all get the death penalty.

Trump tells confidants a softer approach to drug reform — the kind where you show sympathy to the offenders and give them more lenient sentences — will never work.

He tells friends and associates the government has got to teach children that they'll die if they take drugs and they've got to make drug dealers fear for their lives.

Trump has said he would love to have a law to execute all drug dealers here in America, though he's privately admitted it would probably be impossible to get a law this harsh passed under the American system.

Kellyanne Conway, who leads the White House's anti-drug efforts, argues Trump's position is more nuanced, saying the president is talking about high-volume dealers who are killing thousands of people. The point he's making, she says, is that some states execute criminals for killing one person but a dealer who brings a tiny quantity of fentanyl into a community can cause mass death in just one weekend, often with impunity.

The substance: Trump may back legislation requiring a five-year mandatory minimum sentence for traffickers who deal as little as two grams of fentanyl. Currently, you have to deal forty grams to trigger the mandatory five-year sentence. (The DEA estimates that as little as two milligrams is enough to kill people.)

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid, and much of it is manufactured in Chinese labs. It can be lethal in extremely small doses. Of the 64,000 people who died of drug overdoses in 2016, more than 20,000 overdosed on synthetic opioids like fentanyl, according to the National Institute for Drug Abuse.

Between the lines: Conway told me this kind of policy would have widespread support. “There is an appetite among many law enforcement, health professionals and grieving families that we must toughen up our criminal and sentencing statutes to match the new reality of drugs like fentanyl, which are so lethal in such small doses,” she said.

"The president makes a distinction between those that are languishing in prison for low-level drug offenses and the kingpins hauling thousands of lethal doses of fentanyl into communities, that are responsible for many casualties in a single weekend."
What's next: Trump wants to get tough on drug traffickers and pharmaceutical companies. Stay tuned for policy announcements in the not-too-distant future.

Trump and some of his advisers are discussing whether they might adopt other aspects of Singapore's "zero tolerance" drug policies, like bringing more anti-drug education into schools.

Both Conway and the First Lady Melania Trump, who has taken a strong interest in the administration's anti-drug policies, support getting better drug education and prevention into schools.
