Trump Talk: or, Lift every voice and sing

It's Black History Month and the fight goes on (plus, we all need a boost that does not come from ye olde hop flask).

Lift every voice and sing

Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us.

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;

Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,

Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years,

God of our silent tears,
Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who hast by Thy might

Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,

May we forever stand.

True to our God,
True to our native land.

James Weldon Johnson (1900)

Sanders promoted false story on reporting Russian trolls

The Vermont senator’s claim of sharing suspicious activity with the Clinton campaign never happened.

And for those of you who may not have seen anything. I hand the baton to Mr Oliver. (Just don't get hung up on 'Lumpy'. )

The former chancellor is not named, but referred to only as "Foreign Politician A" in the indictment. Only three European countries have chancellors - Austria, Germany and Switzerland.'

not true. other countries have chancellors as well, just not as head of state.

All the companies and organisations pulling back from the NRA - apart from ththe bleeding obvious, what is their stated justification?

lionheart · 24/02/2018 16:52

You're still right about Farage, Pain. Wink

I remember the days when politicians, businesses, organizations, and even private citizens trembled in fear of the 'might' of the NRA. They were as bad a Scientology when it came to digging dirt, blackmailing, creating false narratives, and spending $$$ to 'ruin' their foes. It is so wonderful to see that that fear appears to be largely broken and that more and more are coming out and saying "Fuck you NRA!".

The news is so 'up and down' now that I'm reminded of a comedy bit (although current events now are not remotely funny) where the comedian would say "The good news is....." and the crowd would cheer. Then he'd follow up with "But the bad news is......" and everyone would groan. That's what watching the actual news is like!

All in all though, I'm heartened. I'm hearing all the shitstorm around Kushner's business dealings and Gates' dirty dealings. I can see the way they appear to be headed. I'm just so impatient for the actual, real, direct connection to Scrotus and so fearful that he's managed to put enough 'layers' between the actual shenanigans and himself that he won't ever be implicated directly. No direct implication, no impeachment. He can't be impeached for what others have done 'without his (provable) knowledge' nor will the election ever be nullified simply because 'third parties' have interfered, that's already been pointed out.

OuaisMaisBon · 24/02/2018 16:57

Fekko - I haven't seen any of them state any justification, not even the bleeding obvious!

Fekko · 24/02/2018 17:10

Shame they don’t go the behold hog and say why the have made their decisions (of course it won’t be the truth that they are scared of customers boycotting them because of their relationship).

Re: security clearances. Wouldn’t ivanka and Jared be refused on the basis of being related to/in business with trump? As a person, he’s pretty shady and he wouldn’t get a clearance himself if he hadn’t been elected president so by dint of being a close acquantaince of his, wouldn’t they be deemed unsuitable?

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 24/02/2018 17:30

Has trump tweeted today?

OuaisMaisBon · 24/02/2018 17:33

Actually, Fecko, I've just re-read Acrossthe Pond55's most recent post and would like to think that their justification is simply "Fuck you, NRA!"

NEW: MUELLER is looking into @SkaddenArps's work with MANAFORT & GATES for pro-RUSSIAN Ukrainian regime. Skadden has produced documents to special counsel & has designated a top atty as point person for dealing with the probe. Lawyers at firm are on edge.

<a class="break-all" href="https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/02/24/us/politics/skadden-law-firm-mueller-investigation.html?referer=t.co/BeCfxtm6To?amp=1#click=t.co/BeCfxtm6To" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">mobile.nytimes.com/2018/02/24/us/politics/skadden-law-firm-mueller-investigation.html?referer=t.co/BeCfxtm6To?amp=1#click=t.co/BeCfxtm6To

RUSSIAN INTEL WATCH: a consultant who worked with @SkaddenArps on the Ukraine report tells me that one of the people involved was KONSTANTIN KILIMNIK, a longtime MANAFORT/GATES associate who MUELLER has assessed as having ties to Russian intelligence.

[kilimnik’s role is really laid out well in maddow’s show last bight]

Just in case I've missed something whilst in Yosemite....in light of the latest guilty pleas and cooperation deals put in place for Scrotus' henchmen (Gates, Manafort et al) has there been any recent talk of Scrotus pardoning them? It's a big worry to me.

A pardon doesn't 'set aside' a guilty plea or conviction, it just restores the person's civil rights & personal freedom (a 'get out of jail free' card). I'm wondering if pardoning someone who has admitted guilt nullifies any agreement to cooperate as they're usually based on 'if you do X we will do Y' (usually a lesser prison term). A pardon would, I assume, remove the threat of prison.

PerkingFaintly · 24/02/2018 17:54

Oh how interesting about Farage (even though article is from 2014).

"Gun ownership" is so utterly ineffective as a vote-winner or issue in the UK that it's really interesting he chose to make a big statement about it – and at a time when he was publicly trashing the UKIP manifesto and didn't even know what his party's policy on Trident was.

I mean, obviously he was dead-catting, having been caught out about the manifesto.

But I'm interested where he got the inspiration to use THAT dead cat. It's almost as if he'd been hanging around with people for whom it WAS a hot, divisive issue...

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 24/02/2018 17:56

Sorry ouais, shouldn’t have pushed it onto someone else!

interesting that there’s been no twat storm. Wonder if he’s being kept busy or the implications are sinking in (unlikely I know).

Love the piece about mueller. This bit In particular

[...]and during the decades that followed took only two breaks to try out the private sector, each lasting no more than a couple of years.

The stints were so short-lived because of a simple fact, according to Graff: Mueller couldn't stand defending those he felt were guilty.

"He'll meet with the client, they'll explain the problem and he'll say 'Well, it sounds like you should go to jail then,'" Graff said. "There is not a lot of gray in Bob Mueller's worldview."

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 24/02/2018 18:03

across the indictments are filed at state level as well I think so even if theyre pardoned for the federal crimes, the fact they’ve accept a pardon which is seen as tacit admission of the crime places them in even more hot water for the state crimes. So prison is still a possibility

This explains it better:
www.justsecurity.org/52775/trump-associates-decline-offer-pardon/

Though there have been calls for pardons.
This was from earlier this week:

Natasha Bertrand
@NatashaBertrand
“It’s kind of cruel what’s going on right now and the president should put these defendants out of their misery,” said Larry Klayman, a conservative legal activist. “I think he should pardon everybody — and pardon himself.”

Conservatives urge Trump to grant pardons in Russia probe

As special counsel Robert Mueller builds his case, relatives of former national security adviser Michael Flynn are among those pressing the president to use his unique legal power and 'put these defendants out of their misery.'
