Trump Talk: or, Lift every voice and sing

lionheart · 17/02/2018 19:58

It's Black History Month and the fight goes on (plus, we all need a boost that does not come from ye olde hop flask).

Lift every voice and sing

Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us.

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;

Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,

Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years,

God of our silent tears,
Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who hast by Thy might

Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,

May we forever stand.

True to our God,
True to our native land.

James Weldon Johnson (1900)

Trump has just had a love-in with Australian Prime Minister Turnbull. Australia changed its gun laws in 1996 after a massacre and has not had one since. Spineless Turnbull does not think it is his place to tell Trump about our successful gun laws.

OuaisMaisBon · 24/02/2018 07:17

I'm interested to know how many people attended Trump's campaign rally speech and how many more watched it on telly? That "Lock her up" thing is so old and completely irrelevant. In the link to the minute by minute description of the speech, there was a photo of a man with tears rolling down his cheeks. I assume they were not of laughter and he was not a Democrat who had found his way in by accident. So why was he crying? Because he thinks his Saviour has come in form of an orange bigot?

boatyardblues · 24/02/2018 07:22

He’s probably crying because he sees how far things have gone and believes the Rapture is imminent, when he’ll be reunited with his Lord and Saviour. Hmm Or maybe he really was a Democrat trying to understand ‘the other side’ better and seeing the nihilistic rage and hate first hand broke him. I’m not sure I could attend one of those rallys and remain impassive.

BrainlessDailyMail · 24/02/2018 07:37

CPAC is hugely attended, it's an annual event that preceded Trump being president (almost before he was a Republican).

OuaisMaisBon · 24/02/2018 07:51

Thanks, Brainless, I was being brainless myself, not having taken in where Trump was speaking Blush
I quote, in amazement, from the NYT - CPAC Trump Conservative Policies
"As it happens, Mr. Cruz, the Republican senator from Texas who was once Mr. Trump’s primary opponent and the object of his taunts, apparently believes everything is going swimmingly. He spoke glowingly on Thursday about the administration’s accomplishments. And in an interview before he took the stage, Mr. Cruz ran through the policies that pleased him the most.

Regulatory reform, Mr. Cruz said, was “an unalloyed success” for the president. The judges Mr. Trump has appointed were “a home run.”

“If you set aside the noise and the political circus of Washington and if you focus instead on the substance,” Mr. Cruz added, “I am deeply gratified with what this Republican president, Republican administration and Republican majority have been able to accomplish.”

Coming from someone as deeply tied into the conservative movement as Mr. Cruz — who also called Mr. Trump “a sniveling coward” and a “big government liberal” when they were opponents — such praise is striking."

OuaisMaisBon · 24/02/2018 07:54

As usual, I take hope from Dan Rather, though I am not as optimistic as he is.
"Those who seek to subvert the will of the majority will work very hard to make it seem like your voices will never be heard. They will make it seem like your votes don't count, like your values are outside of the norm of true American patriotism, that you must show respect to those who show you only disdain. Don't believe it. Cynicism and intimidation are often the refuges of the weak in an effort to make themselves seem strong.

But as we see voters rise up in elections across the nation, as we see a new generation of candidates for office claim that now is their time, as we see even the mighty NRA under siege with former corporate allies scurrying for the exits, it is a timely reminder: NO president...NO interest group... NO political party is bigger than the nation at large.

I have seen, time and time again, in the United States and around the globe, movements rooted in only a minority of the population change the course of history. This is especially true when those seeking change are on the side of justice. But there is something different in this country now. I do not see these protests as the marginalized fighting for fairness in an unjust system. I see it as a majority of Americans who believe in the rule of law, common sense gun regulations, honesty and integrity. They are rising up and realizing that when they speak they are joining a chorus of the majority."

woman11017, thanks for those links.

If the killer pleads guilty (or even if he doesn't), I wonder if there's going to be the sort of investigation that looks at motive? He attacked his own school, which is the "normal" pattern (ShockSad that this happens enough there's a "normal"), so it might be difficult to determine how much the motive was "my school" and how much it was specifically anti-semitic and racist.

CPAC communication director Ian Walters said tonight at the Ronald Reagan dinner: “We elected Mike Steele as chairman because he was a black guy, that was the wrong thing to do.”

Guests at tables apparently gasped in shock.

[is it awful I don’t have much sympathy for Michael Steele though? He presumably looked at the list of speakers and thought it was absolutely fine to give a platform to white supremacists and holocaust deniers or he wouldn’t have been there]

CNN is now releasing copies of the network's email exchanges with the Haab family after receiving inquiries this afternoon from the HuffPost and Fox News.
According to a CNN spokesman, those two outlets had received a "doctored" version of the correspondence that made it appear as if CNN had dictated a question to 17-year-old Colton Haab.
As part of their due diligence efforts, Fox News and HuffPost presented CNN with the exchanges. CNN alleges that one of the emails forwarded by these outlets cuts off a few words that are critical to understanding the back-and-forth.
CNN has maintained that it paired a question submitted by Colton Haab with a prefatory statement that he'd made previously on a "Fox & Friends" appearance. Which is to say, they wanted Haab to merely recite what he'd already said.
Here's the email released by CNN that represents that interaction. Note the part that indicates "that he submitted":

The Republican National Committee has for months been quietly paying expenses previously covered by the Trump campaign in an arrangement that experts say is bizarre, but legal.

The payments include more than $37,000 a month in rent to President Donald Trump's company, and thousands more in salary to Vice President Mike Pence's nephew, John Pence.

The payments started abruptly last September, when the RNC came under pressure to stop paying Trump's personal legal bills in the special counsel's Russia investigation.

@RVAwonk
This is like a case study in active measures, boiled down into one chart. Per @SecureDemocracy's Hamilton 68 dashboard, the top trending hashtags in Russian-linked influence networks include calls to boycott the NRA... and calls to boycott companies boycotting the NRA.

1/

The top trending hashtag is a call for Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel to resign. This started circulating when the NRA blamed him for "failing" to stop the Parkland shooting, rather than looking at the gun used to carry out the shooting.

2/

The #9 trending hashtag (SheriffIsraelResign) is a variation on the #1 hashtag, calling on Sheriff Israel to resign.

Worth noting here: Sheriff Israel called out the NRA this week, prompting them to blame him for not stopping the Parkland shooting.

3/

The #2 trending hashtag in Russian-linked influence networks is a call to boycott the NRA.

The #6 & #10 trending hashtags are calls to boycott a company (Enterprise) that just cut off its corporate ties to the NRA.

4/

Guns/gun control were among the main issues that Russia exploited to sow discord & pit Americans against each other during the 2016 campaign (and before... and after). They're playing both sides of the hot-button issue & exploiting existing divisions.

5/

This doesn't mean that Russia created these hashtags. It doesn't mean that bots created these hashtags. It means that Russia knows how to find the fissures in American society, and how to pit us against each other by exploiting issues that divide us.

Zoe Tillman
@ZoeTillman
A little non-Mueller legal news tonight: DC and MD asked to file an amended Emoluments Clause complaint, adding Trump as a defendant in his individual capacity. Previously, he was only sued in his official capacity (thread coming) assets.documentcloud.org/documents/4386797/2-23-18-DC-v-Trump-Amended-Complaint.pdf

At a hearing in January on Trump's motion to dismiss (see: www.buzzfeed.com/zoetillman/trumps-dc-hotel-did-well-last-year-thats-fueling?utm_term=.gjM2ynOrD#.eprzJ6VL7 …), the judge raised a concern about Trump only being sued in his official capacity, given that the alleged violations stemmed from his personal business dealings

www.buzzfeed.com/zoetillman/trumps-dc-hotel-did-well-last-year-thats-fueling?utm_term=.gjM2ynOrD#.eprzJ6VL7

The judge speculated that it was the sort of non-merits issue that could complicate a future appeal. He didn't order DC/MD to amend the complaint, but strongly hinted they should think about it

So now DC/MD have come back with an amended complaint that names Trump in his individual and official capacity. If the judge allows them to proceed, it raises a question about what happens to the pending motion to dismiss that's already been argued

DC/MD have also filed a motion asking to have the arguments on the motion to dismiss apply to the new, amended complaint: assets.documentcloud.org/documents/4386798/2-23-18-DC-MD-Memo-on-Motions.pdf … They contend the rest of the complaint is the same, so it shouldn't change anything

AP wrote on this: www.usnews.com/news/business/articles/2018-02-23/emoluments-suit-vs-trump-now-personal-as-well-as-official … and notes that naming Trump in his individual capacity would raise new questions, because you can really only violate the Emoluments Clause in your official capacity

He is also alleged to have created a group called the Hapsburg Group to give the former politicians' lobbying efforts the appearance of independent analysis.

The alleged group was managed by a former European chancellor, according to the indictment.
