Aldi candles

AIBU to say that the Aldi, no 1, no 2 etc candles, which are much hyped to be amazing dupes of jo malone candles, are totally scentless and a complete waste of money?!

Thanks to the pp for the St Eval recommendation. I bought the Bay and Rosemary and it smells great and has a really good throw.

Greenteandchives · 27/02/2018 14:09

Good to hear. Hope you enjoy it didius.

fantasmasgoria1 · 27/02/2018 14:16

I had some primark reed diffusers and they were rubbish. You could only smell them if you practically stuck your head in the pot! Never again! Cheap vanilla tea candles from poundstretcher were brilliant!

DetectiveDog · 27/02/2018 14:21

Well this is weird, I’ve got some big Aldi no 2 ones and they’re really good Confused Maybe it’s different batches?...
Can’t compare to Jo Malone though, never smelt one of those.
I do like White Company ones.

jogill57 · 03/10/2018 15:33

I have never noticed the word SOY on Aldi candles. Does anybody know what they are made of. Hope they are not paraffin or blended wax as these can be carcinogenic.

Belina · 03/10/2018 15:33

Their plug ins are decent

DaphneDiligaf · 03/10/2018 15:42

I think the reeds are great for the money. The best I have ever had though was Molten Brown, lasted for ages.
Jo Malone candles a lot better than the perfume which wears off in minutes.

I'm a candle-maker and this ain't really a concern. Don't buy into the Soya oil association marketing bullshit.
Any side products of combustion can potentially contain carcinogens. No barbecues or roast potatoes for you?

Paraffin wax can be seen as more eco-friendly due to the airmiles needed to get the soya or palm oil over here. The soy /paraffin choice is more to do with marketing hype than anything else.

Jo Malone candles are a huge rip off, they are more scented than the Aldi ones but burn really badly and the price mark up is just insulting.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 03/10/2018 16:50

I'm a candle maker too and agree 100% with Aromatica. If you knew the truth about soy wax you would never buy a candle made from it again. Its all a marketing ploy. All the soy wax in candles is made from GM soy using pesticides and herbicides. Solvents are used to extract it and nickel is used in the hydrogenation process. Vast areas of American farmland have been taken over to produce soy instead of using it for food crops. The use of pesticides and herbicides have resulted in more and more super weeds meaning that stronger and more toxic weedkillers have to be developed to combat these super weeds. But, because they remove the GM markers during processing, they call it "natural". It's a ticking time bomb for the farmers in USA. Why do you think that most of the big candle companies won't touch soy? Its not because of the price, because there are only a few pennies per kilo difference in price. It takes 60kg of soy beans to produce 10kg of soy wax whereas paraffin wax is a byproduct of the oil industry that hardly needs any processing, is food safe and non toxic.
Sorry for the rant...it's a real bugbear for me when people spout crap about how eco friendly soy wax is!!!

Aromatica · 03/10/2018 17:18

Thanks Sugarplum .
I couldn't be bothered to type all that. You are so right.
I've used up my soy oil I had, not bought any for 5 years or more. People who fill their car with petrol and then avoid "toxic" mineral wax puzzle me. Shows how powerful US agricultural marketing is I suppose.

I call soy candles, Roundup Ready candles. Probably better to just buy shares in Monsanto!!

I'm now off to find where the candle makers on Mumsnet hide.
Chandling forums are dull, rather be amongst a community of "disrespectful women"

Theorbo · 03/10/2018 17:23

I honestly thought I’d got one from a bad batch because as you say it (No.1 lime, basil and manderin) smells of precisely nothing. I might take it back because its surely trade descriptions to call it a ‘scented’ candle if it doesn’t smell. Grrrrrr

Tahani · 03/10/2018 17:27

thanks for that info on Soy - i thought it was 'better' than paraffin...

I have a 3 wick one from Sainsburys, in a red glass bowl with No.5 on it, its LOVELY!

My Aldi ones are lovely too,

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 03/10/2018 17:28

I’ve only had the Pomegranate Noir ones and mine have had great throw. I live in a small flat though and have never had a JM candle to compare!

Last Christmas they had a 3 pack that only had 1 wick - they tunnelled badly as the candle was too big for 1 wick.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 03/10/2018 17:29

Don’t agree at all, I found they filled the room with fragrance and I really want to get more!

Lazybonita · 03/10/2018 17:35

I have to say if you are looking for reasonably priced (but not really cheap) candles The St Eval Cornish ones are gorgeous. Particularly the Sea Salt. It is fresh and lovely and you are very aware of it in a non overpowering way.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 03/10/2018 22:37

Aromatics, you sound just like me :)
I've never come across a fellow Chandler on mumsnet before.
And, for those of you who buy some of the big name candles, a lot of them have an unscented core which is why the first couple of burns are ok but them the fragrance fades.
There are Chandler in every town in the UK. Most of them put their heart & soul into making their candles. Why not search some of them out and try a hand poured candle?

CSIblonde · 04/10/2018 01:38

Try the faux battery powered vanilla Asda ones. £2. Last ages with 3small batteries, smell gorgeously vanilla & look real.

Aromatica · 04/10/2018 18:05

Yes definitely check out independent candle-makers people. They can make the most wonderful things.

I'd love to go professional. At mo doing gifts few commissions, a friends wedding etc. There is so much work involved with safety testing, insurance, labelling, storage, transport and other things to use the kitchen for !! These people deserve your custom.

Belina · 04/10/2018 18:34

I brought number 2 from aldi BlackBerry and bay candle it smells of nothing
I also brought the room spray which is basil mandrien and something else it doesnt smell great
Would not recommend

I brought scented candles from bnm store which are nice

HollyBollyBooBoo · 04/10/2018 18:47

Agree as is the diffuser, smells of chemical and I put it down the loo after a few hours.

EscapeToTheMoon · 04/10/2018 22:57

Ive tried many reed diffusers and yet to find one that works.

But Aldi candles, i love!

Wilko do great ones and so do Hone Bargains. The mock Yankees in the jars.

MissLadyM · 03/12/2018 02:16

I agree but someone bought me the fig & cassis no18 and it's outstandingly good. I'm a real candle snob and am blown away by this!

BunsOfAnarchy · 03/12/2018 07:10

I tried i think a number 18 feon aldi.

It was strong, but i ended up not being fond of the the scent after about 5 mins.

The glade ones are much MUCH better. Currently loving the xmas nutcracker delight ones, in tbe 'Dancing flowers' scent. Its a pale blue one. Last year there was a gorgeous pne called sparkling wonder which was another xmas/ wintry one.

My favourite was a limited edition glade one called velvet tea party. I find them much stronger than even yankee or woodwick.

PouchofDouglas · 03/12/2018 07:10

Pomegranate.

BunsOfAnarchy · 03/12/2018 07:10

Oh lord forgive my epic spelling blunders in previoys post. Should always check before i post!
