Won't give me another wheelie bin...

Bins here are collected weekly. EVERY Sunday without fail my wheelie bin is full. (There collected Thursday) several times local cats (I believe) have managed to get the bags out the wheelie bin as they are open with the bags on top because they are over flowing. Anyway these cats will rip out all my rubbish so the garden will be covered. I called the council and asked for another wheelie bin as several neighbours have more than one of the same colour top bins. I was told I wasn't allowed another one and the ones the neighbours had were "obviously stolen!" Aibu to not see why I can't have another one. And before any one suggests I recycle more I do I recycle everything that can be and I have no car to go to a tip.

OP you can buy the 240L bins on amazon.

ScaredMum22 · 11/02/2018 16:52

When I moved into a rented house once , the wheelie bin was completely broken no lid and all burnt couldn't have been used. Called the council and they said I had to pay £48 for another even though it wasn't my fault!!

I’d love our council to collect weekly, I have a school age child in nappies and that takes up at least a quarter of my bin over a fortnight.

Thankfully we can have as many recycling bins as we need, so I have two blue and two garden bins. Makes life easier, though playing bin Tetris can be a hairy enterprise on collection days!

WeAllHaveWings · 11/02/2018 16:56

And we are moving to 4 weekly household bin lifts next month and getting one of these wheeled recycling trolleys instead (picture is our local authority advertising showing a happy recycler Hmm) which will picked up weekly along with the food bin.

How that tiny blue bin on the top will cope with Amazon excess packaging I'd no idea!!!!!

Won't give me another wheelie bin...
SavageBeauty73 · 11/02/2018 16:59

Do you recycle?

ObscuredbyFog · 11/02/2018 17:03

Recycle more and Google for Wheelie Bin locks to keep the cats out?

kungfupannda · 11/02/2018 17:05

Are you really recycling everything you can or is there stuff going in the bin that shouldn't be? There are 5 of us, including one in nappies, and we don't fill a large wheelie bin, even on fortnightly collections.

Most councils are clamping down on waste as we can't just carry on throwing everything into landfill. It's quite selfish not to bother with something as easy as food recycling when the facility is available for minimum effort on your part.

It doesn't have to just sit in your house. You can line the outside food waste caddy and empty the indoor one regularly.

Have you actually checked what you can recycle? It might be more than you realise. We have one recycling box that takes paper, glass, fabric, small electronics, batteries and various other random things. Are you recycling all types of cardboard and plastic?

You really need to get on top of this, rather than just looking for ways to manage the large amount of waste you're producing.

InToMyHeart · 11/02/2018 17:07

In my area we are only allowed two bin bags per household a fortnight (you get an extra bag for a family over over five). We get fined £100 if you put an additional bag out so I don't really have a lot of sympathy. It sounds like you are throwing a lot away!

DuckAndPancakes · 11/02/2018 17:08

I have a small bin. Half the size of normal wheelie bins.
Ours are collected every fortnight. House of four including one in nappies.
I just about fill it.

I don’t understand where people get so much rubbish from?!

Ariela · 11/02/2018 17:09

There are masses of ways of reducung waste, the whole reason the councils restrict you is to get you to think about cutting down waste!

Firstly, squish the air out of any bags of rubbish you put in. If you do it gentle then the bags won't burst. I just tread lightly on ours and encourage the air out of the open end before tying it up

Anyone using nappies - reusable ones save you money and are better on containment, you're really missing a trick not to try them at least.

Ariela · 11/02/2018 17:10

PS FWIW family of 3 we only put out every 2-3 weeks.

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 17:12

Couldn't use reusable nappies. Washing is also a MASSIVE problem for me so do 2/3 washes a day. Wouldn't want to do anymore.

Are all your neighbours bins he same size as your small one? It is probably worth calling to check if you are entitled to swap to a larger bin.

I’d also get a lock to make sure it’s only your rubbish going in and I’d start recycling food waste seeing as that’s what you seem to be producing loads of.

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 17:14

I could get wheelie bin locks but it wouldn't work as then I would only be able to fill to the top so the lid can close when I can normally fit another 2 bags in (but lid doesn't close)

Ariela reusables aren’t suited to all situations unfortunately. My son deserves dignity, something he’d not get in reusables. For smaller children though I agree they’re ideal.

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 17:16

My direct next door neighbour is elderly and single so one small bin is enough for her. Various other neighbours I've seen have multiple bins that's why I called the council to ask. One has 3 black bins and 3 recycle!

purplecorkheart · 11/02/2018 17:16

You need to invest a tilt and turn lock for your bin. This will stop other people putting bags into your . You should also look at a rubbish compactor that you attach to your bin (I am not sure what it is called.)

IncyWincyGrownUp · 11/02/2018 17:16

Kitty be glad your council take your bin at all then, as here your bin would be left if the lid wasn’t down and fully closed.

Quite frankly you have a huge amount of space, you’re just not using it well.

AnnaMagnani · 11/02/2018 17:16

Basically you need to review your waste.

Your council takes food waste and you aren't doing it - that would be a massive part of your black bin.

What else goes in recycling that you haven't been recycling? We had a look at our council's website recently and they took more stuff than we realized.

Our recycling bin is packed, green bin varies depending on the seasons but black bins nowadays doesn't get much in it. Just the non-recyclable stuff.

morningconstitutional2017 · 11/02/2018 17:18

Do you get on with your neighbours? Could you ask them nicely if you could put just one bag of your rubbish in their bins (space permitting) if necessary? Of course you must never take the piss by overdoing this.

Firstly though, I'd go online. Surely typing in 'extra dustbins' and your local authority will bring up some results and you may be able to arrange the whole thing including payment.

Alternatively ring the council again. You may well get a different person who is more helpful.

dementedpixie · 11/02/2018 17:19

Our bins have gone onto a 3 weekly cycle apart from the food waste which is fortnightly. We had bought a bigger general waste bin a few years ago and I'm glad now! We get larger recycling ones free but not general waste ones

Rinoachicken · 11/02/2018 17:19

But at the moment you don’t even know if all the bags in there or even yours?

Or maybe you DO know for sure they are yours, in which case you need to seriously reduce the amount you are putting in your black bags

Louiselouie0890 · 11/02/2018 17:21

How are you filling it after 3 days there's 6 of us and it's every fortnight
