Won't give me another wheelie bin...

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 15:30

Bins here are collected weekly. EVERY Sunday without fail my wheelie bin is full. (There collected Thursday) several times local cats (I believe) have managed to get the bags out the wheelie bin as they are open with the bags on top because they are over flowing. Anyway these cats will rip out all my rubbish so the garden will be covered. I called the council and asked for another wheelie bin as several neighbours have more than one of the same colour top bins. I was told I wasn't allowed another one and the ones the neighbours had were "obviously stolen!" Aibu to not see why I can't have another one. And before any one suggests I recycle more I do I recycle everything that can be and I have no car to go to a tip.

We wear everything Once then wash it I thought must people did

I wash clothes when they are dirty? Crikey our planet is fcuked if everyone is washing everything automatically as soon as it has been worn once.

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 20:04

Didn't someone say they were £50? That's cheaper than paying for taxis once a week at £10 each.

I don't consciously " buy lots of packaging". The packaging comes with what I buy. I think reducing it is a difficult thing to do if your shopping comes mainly from supermarkets as mine does. This is driven by time and price.

I put out a lot of recycling bags but there is no limit here. Plus food waste caddy and garden waste caddy. The end result = 1 small black bag a fortnight mainly filled with squishy plastic.

melj1213 · 11/02/2018 20:05

No I don't put any food in the food bin ... Ofcourse that adds up!

But not to a whole wheely bin's worth! I could put my entire kitchen contents in my 120l black bin and still have room to spare!

Rinoachicken · 11/02/2018 20:06

Are you going to start flattening your recycling????!!!

TattiePants · 11/02/2018 20:08

I was going to start a thread about rubbish collection as our council switched to fortnightly collections last year and people are constantly complaining about how disgraceful this is.

As a family of 4 plus cat, our general waste bin was emptied on Tuesday and the only thing in it 5 days later is half a pizza box and some cat litter. We recycle everything except food waste and neither bins are anywhere near full with fortnightly collections. Medical waste aside, I just don't under how an average family can create so much rubbish.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 11/02/2018 20:08

You wouldn’t need to taxi once a week though. Build up enough to make a monthly trip. Or, again, FLATTEN YOUR RECYCLING! Hmm

goose1964 · 11/02/2018 20:08

Remember it's reduce, reuse, recycle. Try steps 1 and 2 and you should end up with less rubbish

BusyBeez99 · 11/02/2018 20:09

Filling a bin every week? You need to recycle more

melj1213 · 11/02/2018 20:10

But you won't need to do tip runs every week if you start flattening your recycling as there will be more room in the bin, therefore reducing your overflow.

An extra tip run once a month (with the 4 weeks worth of extra recycling, as all the general waste will now fit in the bin and your recycling bin will be filled with crushed/condensed items leaving a minimal amount as overflow) means the cost of a bin would cover half a year's worth of tip runs ... during which time you can work on reducing the amount of stuff you buy requiring recycling/throwing away.

orenisthenewblack · 11/02/2018 20:10

Putting your rubbish in your neighbour's bin without permission is counted as fly-tipping here, so you could report it.
We have a one bin policy here so even if you buy a second bin they wouldn't empty it. You could of course pay for a private firm to collect your waste, but that is , if you want the easy way out with no second thought to all the waste you produce.
Recognising a lot of posters from north Wales here. Due to the three/ four weekly collections. And all positive attitudes too which is very refreshing.
Our policies here in North Wales is helping Wales be in the top three countries in the world for being best at recycling. Sadly, England are lagging behind. Catch up wontcha Grin

This thread is reminding me of my selfish neighbours (converted flats with communal bins) who last week had a massive furniture delivery and instead of a) disposing of the packaging gradually or b) taking it to the dump when they have TWO cars decided instead to fill up every single one of our communal bins, both recycling and regular. Though not food. I was raging.

Just put food in your food waste bin, it's literally no more gross than simply having it in the normal bin.

bigbluebus · 11/02/2018 20:17

Our general household waste bin has only been emptied fortnightly for years. For most of the time there were 4 people living here - including one disabled doubly incontinent tube fed adult - so large nappies and lots of medical disposible waste - and we still only filled one bin every 2 weeks. We probably could have got an extra bin due to DDs medical needs but we've never needed to ask. I can't believe you fill a bin in 3 days. There's only 2 of us now and the bin can go nearly a week without anything being put in it at all.
I think you need to review what you are buying and throwing away. The council clearly think that too which is why they won't give you another bin. Landfill waste is expensive - you need to look at recycling more.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 11/02/2018 20:20

OMG! No wonder you can’t afford taxis! Unnecessary electricity water use as well as wasting food......

Please OP take a good hard look at your environmental footprint! Not all clothing needs to be washed after every wear. Underwear obviously and work/school shirts but jumpers (worn over another layer), skirts and trousers do not need washing after every wear.

If you are a household of five then I guess you have at least three children... please educate yourself for the sake of them and their future....

Pikehau · 11/02/2018 20:22

This can not be true - it’s 2018 - why are we all not recycling????

Family of 5 here (albeit 6,3 and 7mth) have 3 brown food bins, one wheelie, one cardboard and paper and 2 green boxes for plastic glass and metal.

I’ll be getting more food bins as kids grow for potato peelings etc.... and that’s mostly what we throw out - peelings etc

Madness!

Yabu to want or need a new general waste bin. Get more recycling ones! Or a compost heap or a trip to the dump!

Rinoachicken · 11/02/2018 20:24

Also, if the problem is that your recycling bin is getting full quickly and so you are putting recycling in your waste bin instead - just get another recycling bin! Most councils don’t set a limit on how many recycling bins you can have - the more the merrier as it helps them reach their quotas.

This has to have been the most irritating thread I've ever read assuming it's real. OP is still going to buy another bin despite being told it won't be collected anyway, freely admits to putting food waste in it and puts boxes in the recycling unflattering. There is simply no helping some people.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 11/02/2018 20:30

unflattened

This.

Do some people and you, kitty, have limits on the amount of recycling you can put out?

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 11/02/2018 20:43

I know I can have as many recycling boxes as I want (we have three different types) and I can get a larger food caddy if I want too.

CasperGutman · 11/02/2018 20:54

Everywhere I've lived has allowed large boxes to be left next to and not in the recycling bins/boxes. Is that a possibility where you are?

Snowysky20009 · 11/02/2018 20:58

We're South Wales and we have a small black bin every other week, black recycling box every week, blue cardboard bag the same week as black bin, food caddy weekly, and green garden bin alternate to our black bin from match-October.
We are a family of 4 and mange easily!
You really need to look at your recycling habits! And don't use your neighbours bins and boxes!

SeniorRita · 11/02/2018 21:32

I wish the whole UK had the same recycling rules. But, anyway, the answer for the OP is clearly:

  1. use the food bin
  2. crush all your recycling (tetra packs can be pushed in at the sides and folded flat, for example, crush drinks cans, tear up/fold down boxes by taking the seams apart)
  3. keep stuff for reusing
  4. ask for a second recycling bin if it's recycling stuff that is causing the issue
  5. lock your black bin - we are not allowed to put bags in our bin and I find if you don't use bags then the space is better utilised, so worth a try?
  6. ask neighbour who lives alone if you can put the occasional bag in her bin if it's not full on bin day, so your lid can go flat.
  7. buy less stuff (the council will get annoyed if you keep putting recyclable stuff in your general waste, you'll get a letter and eventually a fine)

Oh, and yes, you can wear things a couple of times before laundering.
