Won't give me another wheelie bin...

Bins here are collected weekly. EVERY Sunday without fail my wheelie bin is full. (There collected Thursday) several times local cats (I believe) have managed to get the bags out the wheelie bin as they are open with the bags on top because they are over flowing. Anyway these cats will rip out all my rubbish so the garden will be covered. I called the council and asked for another wheelie bin as several neighbours have more than one of the same colour top bins. I was told I wasn't allowed another one and the ones the neighbours had were "obviously stolen!" Aibu to not see why I can't have another one. And before any one suggests I recycle more I do I recycle everything that can be and I have no car to go to a tip.

When the recycle bin is full I use the main one obviously. Recycle bin fills quicker as it's usually boxes so goes in the main one them that fills and leaves me with nowhere to put extra bags. We wear everything Once then wash it I thought must people did. There are 5 of us.

We are a family of 5, albeit 4 adults and one child. Definitely couldnt manage on one wheely bin a week. We have four large wheely bins, 2 for recycling and two for general waste, emptied on alternative weeks. We also have 2 food caddys emptied every week. All our bins are always full. Cant see how you would have that much less rubbish than me. so YANBU.

SluttyButty · 11/02/2018 19:46

Twillow I sometimes have to do two loads a day because DS wets the bed still at almost 13. Sometimes it’s unavoidable but mine get yelled at to not put clothes in the wash basket (dd who’s only had one lesson that day) and rewear several times before washing.
I’ve recently got smart meters fitted and they’re eye opening. Thames water came last week and went through some money saving advice that I didn’t know. I can be a bit of a lazy trollop sometimes but I’m very recycling and environmentally aware because I’ve researched how I can do my bit Grin

Can't be bothered reading through... we have fortnightly collections. We have the tiny bin... the one single people used to use. We are a family of 4 with one in nappies. We manage fine... recycle, compost etc. You shouldn't be filling a full size wheely in 3 days 🤔

spiney · 11/02/2018 19:50

Kitty we have loads more recycling too. Can't you just keep filling more recycling bags rather than putting into the black ordinary waste bags? That will fill them up so quickly. Are you limited in the amount of recycling you can send?

We're 5/6 and always seem to be washing. Probably twice a day. But it has to be dirty not just worn.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 11/02/2018 19:51

Kitty with as much kindness as Incan muster, younneed to up your game. You don’t need to get another bin, younjust need to learn to use the ones you have.

Recycling: nothing goes in the bin unless is has been squashed or shredded as much as possible. Cans can be squashed, as can milk bottles if they’re plastic. Boxes need ripping up into smaller flat pieces.

Garden/food: all food waste should be recycled if possible. Compatible bags for it all, and into the outside caddy. It might not be a pleasant thought, but it will free up space in your big bin.

Only absolutely unrecyclable stuff into the grey/general bin. Nappies if you use them, those plastics and wrappers that can’t be recycled. Cat litter etc.

If you get into these habits you’ll find your bin closes.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 11/02/2018 19:52

When the recycle bin is full I use the main one obviously.

Not obviously! You’re not supposed to put recycling in the general waste! It’s not a recycling overflow bin. You’re supposed to take your excess recycling to the amenities centre and put it in the right skip. Get a taxi if you don’t drive.

Also how much are you buying every week that your recycling bin is filling before emptying day? Mine gets emptied fortnightly but I only out it out every 4 weeks as it’s never full. You sound like you’re buying shit loads of unnecessary packaging.

twinone · 11/02/2018 19:52

Gosh, family of 4, one white wash and one coloured at the weekend.
Sometimes I do a coloured wash mid week.

We are fed by a natural spring and I am very conscious of our water consumption.

April241 · 11/02/2018 19:53

Fortnightly alternate week collections here (black and blue) we dont have a food bin.

Family of 4, twins in nappies, we do weekly skip runs with extra recycling and our bins are always jam packed!

TalkinPeace · 11/02/2018 19:54

I struggle to understand how you fill your bin so fast.
Even when I had kids in nappies I never more than half filled the wheelie bin in a week.

When we had a bin strike a few summers ago it took us 9 weeks to fill the wheelie bin

  • because we were CAREFUL what we BOUGHT and what we threw away
dementedpixie · 11/02/2018 19:54

See if your council will provide larger recycle bins too as that will then stop the need to put excess recycling in the general waste bin

twinone · 11/02/2018 19:54

And yes, you don't need to buy another bin, you need to up your game when it comes to sorting your rubbish and start collapsing your boxes!

gingercat02 · 11/02/2018 19:54

Our council don't do food caddies or composting but I have just bought a composting thingy on the back of this thread. There only 3 humans and 2 cats here but our rubbish bin is never full. I would like 2 weekly rubbish collection and weekly recycling rather than the other way as we have

melj1213 · 11/02/2018 19:54

Kitty in that case, start crushing everything that goes in your recycling bin and that will solve your problem by giving you extra space to put the stuff that no longer has to go in the general bin.

Also if you're going to invest in extra rubbish storage I'd invest in something to hold extra recycling and food waste as that appears to be your problem, not general waste.

Check with your council as I know mine won't provide extra general waste bins but will happily let you purchase extra recycling containers for a reduced cost as they want to encourage people to recycle as much as possible. The only reason I haven't bought an extra recycling bin is because I have nowhere to store it and whilst it would be helpful I don't need a second full size container as I can get away with filling the bin and then storing any extra until the next collection.

FranticallyPeaceful · 11/02/2018 19:55

Family of 4 (plus a dog and cat) and we have fortnightly collections that alternate between recycling and trash collection and we just about manage, but sometimes have to make tip runs ourselves.
I’m unsure how you can be collecting so much waste if you’re recycling, unless you’re very very wasteful with food?

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 19:55

Can't taxi haven't got that kind of money! And yes you can put it in there. Never had the council complain.

We do anywhere between one and 3 loads per day. I have a small drum on the washer, so a standard sized one would cut that down some days. Things are washed after two uses (except socks and underwear obviously). DS is in cloth nappies which accounts for a wash every 2nd/3rd day depending on how many we've gone through.
We spend a lot of time outdoors so often have muddy waterproofs, we swim twice a week, and DS attends two toddler groups a week where they have art and messy play activities out, so we both usually need a change after those. We're just heavy on our clothes.

InsomniacAnonymous · 11/02/2018 19:56

So you're throwing away several black bags full of food every week?

UndomesticHousewife · 11/02/2018 19:57

Family of 5 and fortnightly collections here. On collection day the bin is full and we have to squash it down but I recycle everything possible. If I didn’t recycle my bin would be full after 4 days.....

TalkinPeace · 11/02/2018 19:58

Can't taxi haven't got that kind of money!
If you stopped wasting so much food you soon would.

Rinoachicken · 11/02/2018 19:59

You simply need to start compacting/breaking down/flattening down your recycling!!

Then it will all fit in your recycling bin and you won’t have to put it in your waste bin!

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 11/02/2018 20:01

Can't taxi haven't got that kind of money!

Well then start flattening your recycling! It’s really not difficult!

How can you say you would buy another bin but can’t afford a taxi to the tip? That makes no sense. The bins cost a fortune.

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 20:03

No I don't put any food in the food bin so apple cores, vegetable peelings, half eaten food, chicken bones, biscuits that's dropped on the floor. Ofcourse that adds up!

OP posts:
Chienrouge · 11/02/2018 20:03

Are you going to try recycling more effectively, or are you just going to buy a new bin?

melj1213 · 11/02/2018 20:03

Can't taxi haven't got that kind of money!

Use the money you were going to use to buy a new bin and put it towards the occasional taxi trip to the tip instead
