To say smoking does look cool?

Yes, I know inhaling thousands upon thousands of cancerous chemicals definitely isn't cool!

But there's something about some people lighting up a cig and looking into the distance that looks rather cool and 'suave' to me

I always picture having a deep conversation with a mysteriously handsome but dark horse of a person, looking far into the distance as they respond to my dilemma "That's life, Soph" or some other talk that included clever sayings that I can never think to use at the right moment.

It looks cool.

My executive assistant aunty use to look very classy sitting with her legs crossed and smoking a cig, whilst listening to my dilemmas

It doesn't and the myth should not be perpetuated, and I say that as a smoker since I was 11, I'm now 37 this year and only gave up for 18m in the past. Disgusting habit.

As an ex smoker now looking at current smokers as I walk past I can verify it does not look cool. Most smokers look incredibly stressed as they smoke just look at their faces as you walk past I think you'll change your mind once you look at actual smokers not ones smoking in films

Not one of those photos looks cool! The smokers always look quite sad huddled against the cold due to the hold that daft stick has over them. They must have it even if it means standing outside in the rain shivering, looks sad and desperate to me.i grew up in a smoking household and am so anti-smoking as my young life was brighter by my parents inability to not chain smoke. House and us stank,never had any money....

I think it just looks cheap.

There are a LOT of snobby class based comments on this thread..it's common, they look poor, bleached blonde hair , desperate.......almost makes me want to take it up again!
The thing is, cig haterz, you don't get it because at heart smokers have a rebellious soul (even the ones who no longer smoke). It's exactly because they are not "sensible" that they are cool.
If I make it to 80 I'm going to go right back on the fags (assuming they haven't been made illegal by then. Actually, even if they have! )

It completely does; ALL the cool people smoke. Alas not me anymore because I wanted to be a Mum so gave up.

My favourite smoker of all time was Joan in Mad Men.

I miss smoking sooooooo much but the truth is it is a killer.

Many happy nights spent out in pub gardens or similar meeting other smokers - who were generally cool people. I miss those days.

That said I’m worried I might, someday, get diognised with a smoking relating cancer.

Argh, I know it's bad for health/whatever else have you. Hence me not smoking. I've lost two loved ones as a result of them smoking like chimneys. This thread really was just light hearted.

I'm not cool anyway. Never have been. I used phrases like "I can get down with the cool kids too, you know " when around my 21 year old boyfriend when I was just a mere 17. One of the reasons he left me was because I'm a boring old soul

It can look cool. And did look cool on a lot of people back in the day, when it was much more widespread, and lots of different types of people did it.

The only people who do it nowadays are invariably, um ... pasty, overweight and unhealthy looking (people who don't give a shit about themselves, basically), so now smoking has become synonymous with them. Definitely not cool.
