To say smoking does look cool?

Yes, I know inhaling thousands upon thousands of cancerous chemicals definitely isn't cool!

But there's something about some people lighting up a cig and looking into the distance that looks rather cool and 'suave' to me

I always picture having a deep conversation with a mysteriously handsome but dark horse of a person, looking far into the distance as they respond to my dilemma "That's life, Soph" or some other talk that included clever sayings that I can never think to use at the right moment.

It looks cool.

My executive assistant aunty use to look very classy sitting with her legs crossed and smoking a cig, whilst listening to my dilemmas

My ex use to 'light up' and that bit where he put his hand over the fag to light up looked really sexy to me

Then again, men reversing and looking behind them to park looks sexy to me so I must be odd

I used to think so.

But my dad, who’d smoked heavily since his teens, looked far from cool while he was dying slowly and painfully over several months. He had COPD and couldn’t even take drinks normally by the end. He had to have those little sponge lollipops. They were totally not cool. He didn’t look like James Dean then.

It's a very nasty habit, but yeah, it looks cool.

If you're 'cool' anyway, I think smoking can add a certain something to that image - if you're not remotely 'cool' in the first place, then it doesn't look at all appealing. I smoke. I don't look cool. But I DID think I looked cool as a teenager. I didn't, obviously.

Slightly off topic but I think smoking is a great leveller, smokers always talk to each other, maybe we all have a death wish in common, I don’t know! Am ex smoker now but have many fond memories of smoking, shame it’s so damaging

I think smoking is a ridiculous thing to do now. It makes you stink, it costs a fortune, it's hugely anti-social, you cannot do it ANYwhere, and it's bad for your health.

I instantly judge - and think less of - anyone who smokes. In 2018, people should know better.

I really miss smoking. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I gave up a few years ago and have no intention of starting again (can't bloody afford it for a start) but by crikey do I miss it.

I'm sorry, when I see someone smoking I think they look ignorant.

It's one thing for an older person to smoke if they started before everyone knew how dangerous it was but there really isn't any excuse for young people to start now.

But dispassionately I certainly agree that a sexy guy with a cigarette drooping from his lip, jacket held casually over shoulder and moody of expression does it for me. Similarly, a depiction of a female sexily blowing smoke is cool.

Tobacco is an attractive smell and a component of many fragrances.

I respect everyone's right to have their anti-smoking views, beliefs and opinions and their right to express those views.

But in some instances I do find that there's a knee-jerk reaction that any mention of smoking provokes. For once I hope this doesn't get turned into an anti-smoking rant thread.

These days, with everything we know, I just think anyone that smokes is a bit stupid really.

As a non-smoker who hates the smell of cigarette smoke (unless I'm outside and get a whiff of it, bizarrely) I'm totally with you.

It makes absolutely no sense at all, I really can't rationalise it. I wouldn't go out with a smoker, so why do I think, under some circumstances, it does look cool?!

Maybe a PP had it - smoking makes somebody sad look sadder and somebody cool look cooler.
