Colleague can’t drive I’m doing all the driving!!

This may be quite long. I work for a company where we travel for work. The arrangement was that I’d be the one being driven until my old partner left and the only other person who was trained in the role of my old partner cannot drive.

This girl is however taking lessons, I understand they are expensive and she is genuinely doing her best however I am just getting a little of sick of doing all the driving. I get paid probably 5x more per day than what this girl gets paid (my role is higher) so not sure if I am being unreasonable.

I am self employed and my partner is PAYE so I do sometimes feel I have no obgliations to cart this girl around. There is no one else who could replace this girl and in all honesty I love my job and our working days are always fun but I just can’t be sure if I should speak to our boss and see what he thinks?

What does everyone else think?

Does driving impact on your ability to be a dentist then?
Or is it just as the senior person you expected to be chauffeured.
It all seems very strange to me but maybe someone with better knowledge will be along now you’ve revealed your occupation.

What does your contract with the company say? Did they commit to providing you with a driver? If not then I suspect you were just lucky with your other partner. Even if your colleague does pass her test it is a big ask to expect her to do much of the driving, let alone all of it, until she has had more experience. You could raise it with your boss but it doesn't sound like they have been very helpful so far.

Also, try not to see your colleague as a girl you have to cart around. it's not very respectful.

Ok. Now you've said what you so I sort of get it. However dentists are highly educated, all the ones I've met have been great communicators and to be blunt your posts haven't been particularly eloquent at explaining your situation and you really haven't come across well.

I can see why doing all the driving could impact on your hand-eye co-ordination due to tiredness and need for rest periods. However this would also impact your dental nurse/assistant (though not as much depending on their exact skill set). I have a friend who is also a dom dentist (mainly care homes) and she shares her driving with her dental nurse on about a 30/70 basis.

So I get why you're pissed off doing all the driving but don't think she should be doing all of it either!

NotEnoughBiscuits · 10/02/2018 18:31

So you're the dentist and your partner is a nurse.

Why should she chauffeur you?

NotEnoughBiscuits · 10/02/2018 18:33

If it's that much of a big deal just ask the company for a driving nurse.

Leiaorganashair · 10/02/2018 18:57

Why did you agree to this arrangement if you aren't happy with it?

Mummyoflittledragon · 10/02/2018 19:16

You should be with someone, who shares the driving with you. Expecting it all one way is still incredibly pompous despite your job.

Sunnyjac · 10/02/2018 19:48
Hmm
SadieHH · 10/02/2018 20:19

I don’t get why being a dentist means you can’t share the driving? Is there something about dentistry I don’t know?

Crickettime · 10/02/2018 21:20

Am also a dentist and I would have no issue in doing all the driving. The job of a dental nurse is also very demanding and particularly with the pay difference I would feel very guilty being chauffeured by my nurse. I think it's more important to get on well with your assistant and work well together when doing the treatment. Even if my nurse could drive I would offer to do all the driving or split 50/50 if they wanted to. I think yabvu

WitchesHatRim · 10/02/2018 21:31

No not an Optician, home visiting dentist.

Absolutely no reason as to why you can't share the driving when they have passed. None whatsoever.

Snowysky20009 · 10/02/2018 21:49

And? GP's drive themselves to home visits....

YellowMakesMeSmile · 10/02/2018 21:51

Yes, dentists are really hard to find Hmm

Maybe your employer did it on purpose in the hope you'd leave. Anybody with the attitude that they deserve to be chauffeured as they are a professional sounds like a nightmare employee.
