The Scottish Government's consultation on changes to the GRA closes on 1st March 2018.

The rest of the UK will likely follow Scotland's decision, so this is your chance to make your views known.

For those who don't yet understand the risks to women from changes to the Gender Recognition Act, please read this document. It is pretty straightforward

Then please complete the Scottish Government's consultation.

You do NOT have to be Scottish or live in Scotland to complete it.

The brilliant Dr Nic Williams wrote a guide to the consultation

PLEASE complete it and pass to friends/family

I said I wasn't going to keep going on about it but this particular detail is bothering me.

One of Marie Dean's complaints is that prison officers won't hand over her hair straighteners, epilator, or make-up.

A statement from Marie Dean's friends demands that "We specifically request that Marie Dean has her identity as a woman immediately returned to her and that it is respected by all staff, to be given back her clothes and her makeup to allow her to maintain her dignity and for her to be moved into the female estate as quickly as possible."

I'm not sure that hair straighteners are an entirely safe thing for any prisoner to have as there is a potential for harming someone else with them.

That aside, using this as an example of why Marie Dean should be in a women's prison is again reducing women to the clothes and make-up we wear.

And again, having clothes and make-up used to decide what makes a woman, when women's own actual born bodies are apparently not good enough to do that, is wrong.

Just finished it - shocking what they appear to think is acceptable! Remove as a reason for divorce - who came up with that one and why do they think it would be ok to come home and find your DH in a pinny and make up

KittiesInsane · 13/02/2018 13:59

DH can wear a pinny if he wants to (and in fact I think he has one somewhere for cooking). Not sure they do makeup 'for craggy skins', but then that would go for me too.

Let's not get the gender stereotypes mixed up with the facts of biology.

Bump,

And, as a political ignoramus what actually happens with the consultation responses. Will some sort of conclusion be reached by the government at some point, and in what form?

DreamyMcDreamy · 14/02/2018 17:40

Thank you for the thread, am reading through it all now with horror...

Same.

The thing that worries me most and I could be wrong here, is that I get the sense that our opinion put into the general public is the minority. Mainly because people are so misinformed.

This. I think a lot of people are honestly oblivious.
