and not 'rap' names. a la Stormi Jenner.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 07/02/2018 12:17

A lot of those Tatler names are tongue firmly in cheek.

VladmirsPoutine · 07/02/2018 12:18

Stormi Jenner much like Apple Paltrow will most likely never need to draft a CV or cover letter like the rest of us plebs. They can be called whatever they like. They will never have to deal in the real world.

Owlettele · 07/02/2018 12:18

@upsideup ditto.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 07/02/2018 12:19

Olivia, Sophia, Amelia and Emily aren't posh names any more. Definitely not.

ShutYoFace · 07/02/2018 12:20

I'm not saying my company has it right in its hiring policies, I don't think it does. It has it's head up its arse most of the time. Simply that it can easily work both ways and the MN wisdom that a Catherine is irreproachably employable whereas a Kylie Mae is not is false

I agree, but what you said was that the importance of names was over stated to a ridicuous degree and then said how important they were in your industry!

But plenty of posh people give their kids unusual names. Plenty of highly educated people give their kids unusual names

Sure, but its the type of unusual name. And in combination with other factors, its not as if names are judged as a single factor.

falsepriest

Bit racist.

Wrong.

stoneagefertilitydoll · 07/02/2018 12:27

Oh lord, see, I'd prefer to be called Stormi than many of the names on that Tatler list - I mean, Wigbert, I love me an old English name, but still..

And yet, there are going to be little Wigberts, perfectly happy, running around, because it's all personal taste, and people not being jerks about it (and other people giving the kids confidence to deal when people are)

I remember hating the name Rupert, then I worked with two different Ruperts, who were both lovely, and now I have a total soft-sport for the name. The person/name combination is what matters, not the name on its own.

I've got a foreign surname, so CV submission was always going to be a bit less successful, I figured what does it matter if the kids have an unusual first name too by that point!

I think you’d be surprised

NotACleverName · 07/02/2018 12:29

Oh, good. Another sneery thread about certain names not being “proper.” Hadn’t had one of those for about a week.

I swear some people can’t cope if it’s not a try-hard, look how terribly middle class we are name:

crunchymint · 07/02/2018 12:30

There is research to show that names matter in how people treat us. It should not be the case, but it is.

RoseWhiteTips · 07/02/2018 12:31

I think people calling their children names such as Agatha, Cedric, Aphrodite, or whatever, is just as bad as the particular name under discussion. The amusing thing is that those rather pretentious name are invariably shortened and in a sense made more acceptable to the modern ear so what was the point in the first place?

RoseWhiteTips · 07/02/2018 12:32

...names

yrhengi · 07/02/2018 12:32

The Tatler list was a joke. And yet it ended up in actual news reports at the time... Confused

EdmundCleverClogs · 07/02/2018 12:36

RoseWhiteTips not wrong. Rap and rappers are predominantly black and of black culture. So suggesting at a rap name or one given by a rapper is ‘not proper’ certainly has racist undertones even if it wasn’t meant that way.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 07/02/2018 12:37

Rose, yy. Half the joke with the Tatler list is that people who aren't genuinely posh wouldn't get the joke, take it at face value and call their kids something stupid like Hieronymous or Ptolemy.

LizardMonitor · 07/02/2018 12:37

Oh, god, I just think people should SHUT UP about what anyone else calls their kids, SHUT UP poking fun and gaping like an idiot in amazement or horror at a name that is different from your own sphere of taste or culture. It is so tedious.

jaimelannistersgoldenhand · 07/02/2018 12:47

Stormi will be at school with children with far more unusual names than hers. Off the top off my head Apple Martin (or is it Paltrow?), Princess Price (or is it Andre?) , Saint Kardashian West are 3 names more out there.
The US has far more chilled attitude to unusual baby names. Rogue or Balonz wouldn't be judged like in the UK.

Shadow666 · 07/02/2018 12:58

The baby's name is Stormi Webster. I don't think its that out there at all.

Ironically, I'd LOVE to call my second Ivy Maude, but my DP won't hear of either of them!! 😭

The Tatler list was a joke of course, but look at the names in the BAs of Times and Telegraph, including those of the titled. You'll find a lot of those from the Tatler list there, and more besides!

This. Among my posh acquaintances baby names have included Hebe, Lettice and Montague.

Halebeke425 · 07/02/2018 14:20

My anecdotal experience of kids names is the more 'working class' people I know are going for really traditional names - Oscar, Oliver, William, Harry, Henry etc and all the middle class and up kids seem to have more outlandish names - Apple, Luca, Hendrix, Hunter, Barclay, Bear etc (all real names of children I've come across)
My children go to a large and quite diverse school. I can't say I care much. Personally I prefer to choose a name that stands out from the Olivers and Evies just enough without sounding completely crazy. The adults I've met with crazy names have all been interesting and successful though!
