To have taken ds to hospital

DS cut his toe quite badly a week ago. Managed to deal with it at home (it bled a lot). A few days later the cut opened up again but again I dealt with it. It hasn't been getting any better but hasn't opened up since. Yesterday it was looking a little odd, I was concerned it could be infected especially as he runs around without socks so I took him to a minor injuries department. They cleaned his toe and dressed it. They said if it doesn't look to be improving this week then to take him back.

A friend contacted me today to ask how we were, DS toe injury came up, I said we had been to the hospital and they had cleaned it and dressed it. She then got really shitty and said that I've treated him like he's a baby? And I could have cleaned it and dressed it myself. I had obviously been cleaning it and putting plasters onto it, but it was more that I wanted someone to look at it to check there wasn't any infection and it was healing.

Was I being unreasonable taking him? As I said it was a minor injuries dept, not a and e. And I don't understand how exactly it's treating him like a baby?

I've really doubted myself now, this is a friend who I've looked to as someone older and wiser, so it feels like a harsh judgement.

Your DS had a minor injury so you took him to the minor injuries unit. I don't really understand how that's at all unreasonable. You'd rather know it's not infected than leave it and find out it is infected weeks down the line!

Not wrong at all, you treated him the best you could and when you thought it was infected you took him to see someone who could deal with it. So on that hand you weren't wasting anyone's time.

I don't understand the treating him like a baby thing though...I didn't realise there was an age limit to wanting to take care of our children and make sure they're ok...does that end when they're no longer a baby?

No you are not UR. You tried your best at home, you were not sure it as working so you sought help. You may of gotten away with going to a pharmacy for advice (if you have that service in your area) but you didn't go to a&e, you didn't waste resorces i dont get what her problem is. Infections in the foot can get nasty quickly especially if you walk around bare foot.

I think your friend is being harsh - you had concerns that it wasn't looking right after cleaning and dressing it yourself so of course you should have had it checked. Don't doubt yourself because of their attitude. Hopefully it will heal by itself but like the health provider has said go back if it still hasn't healed this week.

Definitely the right thing to do with a three year old. That's what minor injuries is for.

If it was looking nasty, then the minor injuries clinic was the most sensible thing to do.

It was a minor injury after all. It's not like you called 999 and demanded he be rushed to A&E via ambulance with all its blues blazing!

I definitely said we went to minor injuries. She tells me a lot I'm too soft on DS, I spoil him etc but I've always put it down to her being from a different country and having a very different upbringing.

You did the right thing for your DS, better safe than sorry.
I know of a family who lost their 5 year old a few months ago when a cut foot became infected and caused sepsis. If ever in doubt, have it checked.

She doesnt sound much like a friend. If any of my friends do anything i dont agree with i just nod and go along with it. They are adults they are perfectly capable of making their own judgements, especially where their own children are concerned. I would never comment on their parenting and they would never comment on mine. We are all responsible adults.
Maybe ignore your friend a bit more, she sounds mad as a box of frogs. I have 2 sons, 13 and 10. Both still have cuddles every day (i am making the most of that), i kiss them every day and tell them i love them. Maybe it is a cultural difference but you are well within your right to tell her to butt out
