To be struggling with school uniform costs

DD managed to get mud all over her blazer and skirt.

I just can't afford to get them cleaned. So i sent her in without the blazer and a note. She has been put in isolation tomorrow.

I am really sick of it. AIBU?

Why can’t you hand wash or use a washing machine?

LIZS · 06/02/2018 16:54

Let it dry and brush off?

sirlee66 · 06/02/2018 16:56

Why can't you afford to get them cleaned? Can't you clean them yourself with water from the tap?

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 06/02/2018 16:56

Most blazers can be machine washed. Just use the wool/delicates cycle then put on a coat hanger on a radiator to dry.

Babipotjam · 06/02/2018 16:56

I imagine blazer is dry clean only

princesspeach21 · 06/02/2018 16:56

Why can't you clean them yourself at home? Just hand wash them if needs be.

MigGril · 06/02/2018 16:57

Most items that say dry clean only can be washed in a delacuts setting in your washing machine and hung up to dry.

I've even done this with my silk dress. Sometimes I think they put dry clean only on there to make you spend more money.

clarrylove · 06/02/2018 16:58

Surely you can spot clean the blazer?

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 06/02/2018 16:58

They can go in the washing machine. I’ve never dry cleaned any here

Iprefercoffeetotea · 06/02/2018 16:59

Even if it says dry clean only you can wash on a delicate cycle. Honestly you can. It's the manufacturer covering themselves. As long as it doesn't have loads of padding that can get out of shape - and isn't silk.

But the isolation thing is just stupid and unnecessary. I assume the school is an academy and therefore a law unto itself?

Gatehouse77 · 06/02/2018 17:00

Unless it's a wool blazer could not put it on a rinse only cycle?

Topseyt · 06/02/2018 17:00

I machine wash my DD's school blazer. No problems. It is nylon though. Unless it specifically instructs dry clean only (for wool etc.) then you usually can. It dries quickly too.

I don't think you can expect school not to react, even though you wrote a note.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 06/02/2018 17:00

You absolutely could have just sponged the mud off Confused

WitchesHatRim · 06/02/2018 17:01

Always put them in the machine

anyoldname76 · 06/02/2018 17:01

stick them in the washing machine or handwash, my dd blazer was dry clean only but it always came out fine when i washed it on a delicates wash, just shake and put on a hanger to dry

IsItSummerYet2018 · 06/02/2018 17:01

I machine wash my DS blazer. Every other day as its either dirty or he says ' it smells of school' 😕
Machine wash will be fine

Socksey · 06/02/2018 17:01

My DS blazer is felted wool and cannot go in any cycle on the washing machine.. .. it can be spot cleaned and dry cleaned if necessary..... or..... I washed it in cold water in the bath and dried flat (can't even be wrung) it survived.... I refuse to pay ridiculous amounts of money cleaning these things.. ..

Helipad · 06/02/2018 17:02

I just came to agree that most "dry clean only" garments can be machine washed on either delicates or wool cycle. Manufactures are just being over cautious and protecting themselves. As pp said, hang it up on a hanger to dry.

Having grown up in another country and went through schooling without any uniforms, I do find some of the uniform rules very draconian.

carefreeeee · 06/02/2018 17:03

Not really your problem - hopefully she'll learn not to get mud on it next time. Take the cleaning cost out of her pocket money

FudgeMallowDelight · 06/02/2018 17:03

I've always washed the blazer on a delicates wash with Woolite. It's still going strong after 2.5 years. It's a polyester one.

Dipitydoda · 06/02/2018 17:04

Clean off dried mud with a brush

Topseyt · 06/02/2018 17:04

I agree too that dry clean only is often not the case. Delicates cycle at 30 degrees is usually fine.

DNAwrangler · 06/02/2018 17:05

Well tbh if she got mud on it, I'd be asking her how she is going to clean it.

falsepriest · 06/02/2018 17:06

Quick laundry cleaning exercise for DD then!

Bluntness100 · 06/02/2018 17:07

There is always one "send em down the mines" poster isnt there.

I also don't understand why you can't spot clean this, it's just a bit of mud. Normally it dries and can't be brushed off then it's a little spot clean if required.
