To ask dog owners at the beach why you don’t

pick up plastic litter ?

I run along a beautiful coastline and see the same dog walkers ignoring the plastic.

You have a bag ready and will walk past a bin. AIBU to think that this would be a help to the environment ?

Husky so what can you do?

megletthesecond · 07/02/2018 07:17

I run and pick up litter. Had to run with a huge empty vodka bottle once.

SoupDragon · 07/02/2018 07:27

Oh for goodness sake of course the OP is NBU.

She is being unreasonable to focus on dog walkers. You, as a runner, are just as capable of stopping to pick up litter as a dog walker. Except your times are apparently more important... Dog walkers have given plenty of reasons why this would be difficult to do yet somehow, as a non dog owner, you have dismissed all these as being unreasonable.

However I do go for loads of walk and so from this moment on I will take (a reusable) bag with me on my walks and pick up any litter I see.

And there you have it. People are the solution, not dog walkers.

PootlesLovelyHat · 07/02/2018 07:38

So Soup what can you do?

Or the people leaving litter could stop.

Lovelyusername · 07/02/2018 07:56

I’m not saying ONLY dog walkers SHOULD pick up plastic from the beach. My Aibu is to ask the dog walkers why they don’t.

Answers; it’s not not my litter on the beach, litter is dirty, you shouldn’t put plastic in bins, my dog is too uncontrollable to pick up a piece of litter, I won’t pick up litter until commuters and families and everyone else is.

But a few people have said they would, so That Is A Good Thing.

I have read all the dog walkers replies. In the main I don’t think the reasons for not picking up the litter from the beach (or field) are that good.

So I don’t think IABU ! Shocker OP doesn’t change her mind.

So Soup what can you do?

What do you mean?

HoneyDragon · 07/02/2018 08:02

As a dog walker I don’t pick up litter from the beach because it’s a 118 miles away and her feet would fall off getting there.

Op as a runner, why don’t you forgo just one of your runs a month to pick up the litter in your local woods wearing gloves as part of a safely and sensibly organised litterpick?

SoupDragon · 07/02/2018 08:03

My Aibu is to ask the dog walkers why they don’t.

So, when are you going to ask the people why they don’t? Given they don’t have a animal to control or any other encumbrances.

Do you have a dog? I can’t remember if you said. If you don’t, then you really can’t make a judgement on whether the rains given are valid or not.

Answers; it’s not not my litter on the beach, litter is dirty, you shouldn’t put plastic in bins, my dog is too uncontrollable to pick up a piece of litter, I won’t pick up litter until commuters and families and everyone else is.

How about “because my hands are already occupied” ? Would you prefer we didn’t control our dogs just so we could pick up litter?
How about you demonise the runner who said her precious times were more important than litter? I bet there are plenty of those.

You need to target the right people with your rant otherwise it’s just as pointless as asking “why don’t ginger people take a bag with them whilst they go walking and clear up alll the litter they see”

SoupDragon · 07/02/2018 08:06

People with a dog to control are not the best people to be litter picking. Their primary focus should always be keeping their dog under control and safe.

SoupDragon · 07/02/2018 08:06

Anyway, this is utterly ridiculous so I’m off.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 07/02/2018 08:10

You are a goady fucker OP.

BigGreenOlives · 07/02/2018 08:12

If I let my big strong very fast dog off the lead so I could pick up rubbish easily you’d get a really fast time Grin.

I pick up bottles when I’m dog walking in parks/streets, always amuses me to be carrying an empty vodka or wine bottle at 7.30am.

Lweji · 07/02/2018 08:15

I think you should ask specifically the ones you see on the beach. I'm sure they'll be able to explain to you why they don't.

ronniebarkersauntie · 07/02/2018 08:20

NO ONE should EVER leave a beach without removing at least five pieces of litter in my opinion. If all beach visitors did that, the litter problem would be much reduced. Doing that small thing before they leave to go home wouldn’t impinge on anyone’s enjoyment of a stroll / dog walk / run.

ToothTrauma · 07/02/2018 08:25

My poo bags are biodegradable. Would rather step on the point to fill them with plastic Confused

Whizbang · 07/02/2018 08:30

What a very depressing thread. Yes it would be great if people in general picked up plastic litter...dog walkers, joggers, surfers, all beach users. However all we have is a litany of people pointing out why it's not their responsibility, how organised litter pickings should take care of it, blah blah blah.

Yes it would be great for dog walkers to help with this. Joggers could really help too OP. They are regularly using the beach. Why shouldn't they take 5 mins during their run to help their local environment. Oh of course, their target time and resting pulse rate takes precedence over any civic responsibility and their time is certainly more important than that of other beach users. Ridiculous. Pick up some litter yourself OP. Dog walkers, you pick up some litter too!

Ronnie Barker above is spot on...we should ALL share the responsibility

HisBetterHalf · 07/02/2018 08:32

Perhaps we could do a bit of street cleaning too while on dog walks Wink

Lweji · 07/02/2018 08:33

NO ONE should EVER leave a beach without removing at least five pieces of litter

I find such statements OTT and laughable.
If anything, NO ONE SHOULD EVER LITTER.
Anything else anyone does to pick up litter, good for them and fine to encourage. But it shouldn't be told it's their responsibility.
Littering is the problem to start with. Go and shout at those making litter.

HuskyMcClusky · 07/02/2018 08:34

Dog walkers, you pick up some litter too!

I do not have any free hands. If you choose to disbelieve this, fine. But you don’t get to tell me when & where I have to clean up after other people.

Whizbang · 07/02/2018 08:36

'I do not have any free hands to pick up litter' above, 'I am jogging so cannot stop' above. Yes, yes, I understand, it is everybody else's responsibility. Sad.

HuskyMcClusky · 07/02/2018 08:38

I give up, because you’re really not listening.

Whizbang · 07/02/2018 08:39

Oh the irony!!

HuskyMcClusky · 07/02/2018 08:41

Would you like me to scoop it up with my mouth?
