As far as Nunes can tell, none of us have even met with Trump

Devin Nunes Gets A Pretty Basic Fact Wrong In Defending His Memo
Nunes suggested that Donald Trump had never met with George Papadopoulos. There's a photo of them sitting at the same table.

And we certainly didn't have a national security meeting right here:

Minimammoth · 07/02/2018 08:18

Don’t worry people it will all be ok, because Trump is going to have a big military—willy waving— parade

I did not notice this amidst the flurry.

DEAR POLISH PARLIAMENT, NO LAW CAN REWRITE HISTORY

Not just Poland that’s sliding into authoritarian times - Hungary and Austria are also following suit. Even though we’re not as far along, the uk is also showing alarming signs.

lettuceWrap · 07/02/2018 11:09

Yes. A big part of the reason I’ve become obsessed with following what’s happening in America, is because it’s so obvious to anyone with even half a brain that we (in the UK) are being pulled in the same direction.

PerkingFaintly · 07/02/2018 11:18

Same here, lettuceWrap.

I'm on these threads because it's clear this push is affecting more than just the US.

And (originally) to support the US posters who sounded so despairing and alone just after the election.

OP posts:
OuaisMaisBon · 07/02/2018 11:58

Oh, yes, definitely, lettuceWrap - and I find it bitterly amusing that sometimes Trumpeters will comment on FB posts telling Brits/foreigners to bog off threads criticising Trump as their country's politics are nothing to do with us.. Idiots.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 07/02/2018 13:25

It is definitely ratcheting up and there are more and more parallels to be drawn every day.

Attacking judiciary (enemies of the people - the editor of that lovely piece is currently Downing Street press secretary), undermining free press, some broadcasters adopting the stance of not challenging government positions (the BBC isn't at Fox levels but the number of lies and false assertions they let slide or even promote is horrifying), trying to consolidate power in just one branch of government by denigrating others (see attacks on House of Lords, triggering article 50 without due parliamentary process, accusing the civil service of making up figures, "crush the saboteurs" "traitors" etc), "will of the people" populism, scapegoating immigrants to push shady legislation, the rise of racism and xenophobia, government officials telling blatant untruths and not facing consequences for it (David Davis and the impact assessment, Boris and the NHS figures, Steve Baker/Jacob Rees Mogg and the civil service), disregarding facts (who needs experts) and claiming that all reports produced by the government/civil service are wrong so there's no need to pay them any heed

are among some of the highlights.

lettuceWrap · 07/02/2018 14:10

It’s grim.
The lies left unchallenged, the (political and actual) attacks on people of particular race/religion/political beliefs, the dismantling of consumer, employee, and environmental protections... the more of that that’s pushed through (in the USA), the more it emboldens those who want to make the same changes here (in the UK).

A small example from my own family (older generation). A couple of family members (in the uk) are surprisingly vocal in their support and admiration of Trump, will make vague comments such as “He’s really showing them who’s boss”, “he’s the voice of the normal working man” “women/immigrants have gone too far”. Honestly they see him as some kind of folk hero... just like Farage Hmm. They voted Brexit, UKIP and they are anti immigrant and racist. They want to Take Britain Back. They believe the MSM is biased against Trump and that there’s a witch hunt against him, and that it’s the same in this country with bias against Brexit.
Sadly, I don’t think there’s anything unusual or special about my relatives- I think that actually, a substantial chunk of the population have similar views to them.
They have become MUCH more vocal about their attitudes in the past couple of years.
Sometimes I wonder if I’m related to them at all Sad

OuaisMaisBon · 07/02/2018 14:49

My husband, who is in his early sixties, has an American boss who is probably 25 years his junior, who works in the US HQ of the company. We don't think this boss voted for Trump, (though we might be wrong, he's almost definitely a GOP supporter), but apparently he will not hear a bad word about Trump nowadays, thinks he's do ing great things for business. If it weren't for the fact are reliant on this job to pay for our child's education, I would be asking my husband to retire early. I am horrified. This is an intelligent man, very good at his job, works his socks off, high position with excellent salary. What can he be thinking?

GingerIvy · 07/02/2018 15:03

I'm an American living in the UK, so I get the terrifying view of my home country going Gestapo and the country I'm living in trotting right behind them. Sadly, I know a LOT of people that are very pro-Trump.

GingerIvy · 07/02/2018 15:06

In fact, one woman I know is so pro Trump, she was going on about how you can't trust Hilary Clinton because her husband cheated on her....she knows Trump's history though and doesn't seem to think that's an issue.

You can't argue with that mentality - there's no logic.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 07/02/2018 15:11

Sad ginger that's an awful position to be in

MATT LAUER: Welcome back to the Trump Millitary parade. I'm Matt Lauer with cohost Lana Trump for Trump TV.
LARA TRUMP: Lara.
MATT LAUER: Whatever. Coming down Pennsylvania Ave is the US Army Fife and drum corps with honorary parade delegate Scott Baio.
LARA TRUMP: Love him!

MATT LAUER: Interesting fact, President Trump was actually in the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines.
LARA TRUMP: Wow!
MATT LAUER: You know how some celebs get an EGOT, Trump has a ANAM.
LARA TRUMP: Look a balloon!
MATT LAUER: I believe that's parade delegate Gov. Mike Huckabee.

MATT LAUER: Next up is a group of soldiers carrying former Trump Advisor Seb Gorka in an ancient Egypt Litter.
LARA TRUMP: He is so great!
MATT LAUER: Little known fact, Seb Gorka is a brilliant military strategist, ever since he got his PhD at the Cap'n Crunch Military Academy.

MATT LAUER: And now folks I believe President Trump will come down that makeshift escalator, take a golf cart over to a platform, sit in an electric chair lift, and hoist up to the top of that diamond covered elephant looking onto the parade route.
LARA TRUMP: He's so energetic.

MATT LAUER: That song we hear from the Navy Marching Band is actually Lee Greenwood's God Bless the U.S.A., but played backwards, as the White House chose not to pay the royalties.
LARA TRUMP: It's still beautiful.
MATT LAUER: Indeed.

MATT LAUER: Oh folks this is a treat, by horseback are some trusted Trump advisors, VP Mike Pence on a white horse, Fox News Sean Hannity on a red horse, Rep Devin Nunes on a black horse, and Newt Gingrich on a pale horse.
LARA TRUMP: Eric!
MATT LAUER: No that's a horse Lara.

BRIT HUME: We have some breaking news Matt.
MATT LAUER: What is it Brit?
BRIT HUME: A woman on the parade route made an obscene gesture, a slight frown, but she was been dragged away from the parade route. I hear the President was never in serious danger.
MATT LAUER: Some people.

MATT LAUER: As these beautiful F-16s fighters go by I want to direct your attention to the detail put into this parade. On the nose of each jet fuselage is a nude pin-up artistic rendering of Ivanka Trump.
LARA TRUMP: Mom!
MATT LAUER: Commissioned by the President himself.

MATT LAUER: Over 10,000 volunteers prepared this Trump Military Parade. When they began they were actually paid employees, but then the gov't shut down so they became volunteers.
LARA TRUMP: America!
MATT LAUER: This parade cost $2 trillion dollars, and Mexico is paying for it.

MATT LAUER: Joining us in the booth is none other than Trump's top Counselor, Kellyanne Conway. That's a terrific costume you're wearing. Revolutionary war?
KELLYANNE CONWAY: I'm not wearing a costume Matt. This is an outfit I got at a Filene's Basement sample sale.

MATT LAUER: This next group marching by, I am not sure which division of the armed forces they represent, but their sign reads White Knights. They are carrying tiki torches.
LARA TRUMP: Patriots!
MATT LAUER: We go now to AL ROKER. What's that? We lost AL?

MATT LAUER: And now the cast of the new hit Broadway Show MNUCHIN will perform their opening number MONEY WALLPAPER. Book and lyrics by Kid Rock. Let's listen in.

MATT LAUER: Interesting alternate fact, the missiles you see are actual nukes controlled by President Trump, and I'm told they're bigger in girth and length, than every other military regime.
LARA TRUMP: So big!
MATT LAUER: Plus they are all pointed towards Chappaqua, NY.

MATT LAUER: Programming note. Immediately following the Trump Military Parade, Joel Osteen, Jerry Falwell Jr., Franklin Graham, Tony Perkins, and Gloria Copeland will host a celebratory prayer service where you can actually touch one of Trump's nuke, for a small fee.

MATT LAUER: Ladies and gentlemen, we have in our booth right now, President Trump's Hologram.
TRUMP HOLOGRAM: Nuke the Muslims!
LARA TRUMP: Daddy!
TRUMP HOLOGRAM: Just kidding.
MATT LAUER: So lifelike.
TRUMP HOLOGRAM: Should we?

MATT LAUER: Thanks for joining us for the Trump Military Parade. The largest military parade in the history of parades, the military, and history itself. I'm off now to a dungeon party at Bill O'Reilly's Oyster Bay swing pad. Thanks for joining us. Come Lara. You like leather?

Trump's silly "Show of Might" parade is predicted to cost $22 million (or 7 Mar-a-Lago weekends). But Trump flat-lined the annual budget of the Office of Government Ethics at $16 million, which is effectively a cut due to rising costs. Who's the Rocket Man now, @realDonaldTrump?

Democrat flips deep red seat

lettuceWrap · 07/02/2018 16:21

My father in law is American (DH was born elsewhere), so lots of American relatives, almost all are democrat voting, educated, mostly working within the education/university academics system - lots of angst in their communications with us as you can imagine.
A lot of what they are worried about isn’t what’s happening right now, it’s about the long term effects. They are concerned that it could be years- or perhaps decades before the damage already done/set in motion is undone.

I can understand why big business loves (some aspects of) Trump, sure, if you slash red tape and regulations (ie drop regulations protecting again pollution, get rid of workers protections, health care etc...), yes companies are going to love that because it increases profits, and maybe it creates more jobs too, not necessarily safe jobs tho!

Wow. From your link:

This marks the 35th legislative seat nationwide that has flipped since Trump’s inauguration and the second just this year.

He won by a mere 108 votes: but that represents a 31 percentage point swing toward the Democrats since Trump was elected.
