There was a very good article which I wish I could find again, articulating how in Hitler's Germany, it was not simply a question of Goebbels telling a lie and the population unwittingly believing it.

It was that the population was complicit in creating the lie. By pretending to believe Goebbel's stories and behaving as if these were true – regardless of any factual basis and often in contradiction to their own experience – ordinary people created the lie and propagated it.

That's what I see the US conservatives doing now. We joke about people not being part of the "fact-based community"... but it's not really a joke.
