Aibu in being shocked at this school newsletter?

Aibu in being pretty appalled at this school news letter or am i being naive?

Children attend a catholic primary school- dh is Catholic I am not. Never had an issue with the school, children are in the last couple of years there.

Had a newsletter home tonight saying that a new ‘children and social work act of 2017’ has been passed and that parents will no longer be able to remove their children for PSHE lessons but that the government are still deciding what content the lessons should have. There is a public questionnaire on gov.uk to write your ideas.

The newsletter then goes on to say that we need to ensure that things that are age suited to children get suggested and I quote ‘to avoid respect for alternative lifestyles being allowed to undermine Christian principles of marriage and family life’.

It then goes on to link ‘coalition for marriage’ for help with us filling in this questionnaire.

Coalition 4 marriage is a group that promotes a traditional family set up and states that children should be taught that ‘marriage between a man and a woman as the gold standard of adult relationships’ Also that ‘they believe there is no age-appropriate way to teach primary school children about same sex marriages or transgenderism’. In blinding hypocrisy it then goes on to say ‘we should be teaching children broad values of tolerance and respect’.

!? I thought that in this day and age in the uk even if you attend a faith school inclusivity was seen as important/ the norm.
Would you be angry at this or just see it as an unavoidable downside of attending a catholic school?

Math I think the hypocrisy isn't about loving the sinner but hating the sin but rather about the site saying they supported teaching broad values and at the same time "there is no age-appropriate way to teach primary school children about same-sex marriages".

BoomBoomsCousin · 02/02/2018 20:50

Boole this Pope has said he supports gay people, and has spoken out against laws that criminalise and discriminate against them. He has not (as far as I've heard) supported gay Catholic marriage, though.

ReanimatedSGB · 02/02/2018 20:53

There is more choice in some areas than others. For many people, moving their DC is not an option - they are stuck with whatever school they got assigned. (Moving house is not an option for a lot of people - lack of jobs, lack of money, need to stay close to family etc.)
It's pretty crap that state-funded schools are still allowed to peddle superstitious bullshit to children. For many parents, the best option really is a combination of complaining to the governors, and undermining the bullshit at home as much as possible.
(and, yeah, whoever it was whining about 'disrespectful' language - superstition doesn't merit respect. Individuals' right to believe whatever bullshit they like is fair enough, but the bullshit itself is fair game for mockery/criticism etc.)

PancakeInMaBelly · 02/02/2018 20:53

Supports gay people? What does that entail exactly, since he has spoken out AGAINST gay couples adopting?

sinceyouask · 02/02/2018 20:54

The law of the land permits gay couples to marry. Catholicism teaches that this is wrong. How is that OK?

Neolara · 02/02/2018 21:01

All schools, including faith schools have a legal restoration promote "British values", defined by the government as democracy; the rule of law; individual liberty; mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.

OFSTED get very cross when schools actively promote intolerance. A number of religious schools of all faiths including Christian schools, have been identified by OFSTED as failing in their duty to promote British values.

(Whole other discussion to be had about government suggesting those values are somehow exclusively British.)

DreamyMcDreamy · 02/02/2018 21:01

You can’t chose a faith school cause it’s well rated and then be askance at faith teachings

Again, the illusion of choice.

There might not be much choice in some areas, but that's the way it is. You can either:

  • send them there and accept that is their beliefs
  • send them there, accept that is their beliefs and teach your children that there are other ways of lives and beliefs out there too
  • or pull them out and homeschool them.

What you don't do is demand everyone bow to your way of thinking just because you don't believe in it.

sunshineintheclouds · 02/02/2018 21:04

Love threads like this.

It is very bad for you to be against peoples views/sexual preference/race

Then people come on and insult people who have a religion.

Confused
Works both ways
Respect people and whatever their choices.

I am not Catholic, I have no issues of anyone being educated about any religion or anyone that may practice a religion.
I am quite capable of having a discussion with anyone about religion and why I may not believe the same thing as them.

However I would never insult them based on their belief .
As long as they are not hurting me or anyone else people have the right to be respected. If they we're hurting me or someone else that would be 100% down to them and I would blame them not any religion they may try to blame it on.

PancakeInMaBelly · 02/02/2018 21:07

Sunshine, some homework for you:
Read your quote: "
As long as they are not hurting me or anyone else"
Then read the OP again.
Then come back and tell us what you think the problem might be here...

PancakeInMaBelly · 02/02/2018 21:09

"If they we're hurting me or someone else that would be 100% down to them and I would blame them not any religion they may try to blame it on. "

No, you cannot apply the "bad egg" theory to the Catholic church. These issues are institutional

Nofunkingworriesmate · 02/02/2018 21:09

Bit sad to see all the Catholic and faith school bashing on here
My niece goes to a lovely catholic school where her two dads are heartily welcomed and they would never teach that load of bollocks in any lesson
Also I want to point out that while the Catholic Church HAD a shocking history in regards safeguarding it is now regarded by those in the know as being gold standard
Op it's so sad your kids school is doing this, surely if enough parents complain they will realise they are very out of touch and have a rethink ?

PancakeInMaBelly · 02/02/2018 21:12

"Also I want to point out that while the Catholic Church HAD a shocking history in regards safeguarding it is now regarded by those in the know as being gold standard"

Is it fuck.
I'm sorry but mass graves. MASS GRAVES. And the RCs church representatives thoughts go out to the perpetrators because we bless them they're old now so just let it lie..

sunshineintheclouds · 02/02/2018 21:13

PancakeInMaBelly

I was not referring to the op.
As I stated it was about the fact threads like this always start out as social respect and in the next breathe people are being totally disrespectful to others who have a different view.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 02/02/2018 21:14

Disgraceful that taxpayers' money is used to promote any religious agenda in schools.

sunshineintheclouds · 02/02/2018 21:15

No, you cannot apply the "bad egg" theory to the Catholic church. These issues areinstitutional

There is always bad people everywhere, putting the blame on a religion is ridiculous.

JassyRadlett · 02/02/2018 21:15

What you don't do is demand everyone bow to your way of thinking just because you don't believe in it.

No. And no one on this thread has suggested that, have they?

But you can (a) call out as bullshit the nonsense some people peddle about having ‘chosen’ a faith school; (b) continue to campaign against the concept of state-funded faith schools to provide a level playing field for children of all faiths and none; and (c) challenge any teachings of their school that are at odds with their legal responsibilities to meet the standards of educational provision the state is paying them to provide.

All while treading the tricky line of trying to support the school and not undermine its other work and the authority of the teachers as trustworthy sources of information despite them teaching belief as fact, while encouraging tolerance in one’s own children.

sunshineintheclouds · 02/02/2018 21:15

There are Blush

Greensleeves · 02/02/2018 21:18

Nofunking of course the two dads are "welcomed" at the Catholic primary school, because it is against the law to refuse to take a child because of the orientation of the parents.

However, as I'm sure the dads themselves are aware, they are being tolerated, not embraced. They are not free to marry in a Catholic church. If they do marry, their marriage will not be recognised by the Catholic church. And the Catholic church's stance is that they should not be allowed to have children.

PancakeInMaBelly · 02/02/2018 21:19

There is always bad people everywhere, putting the blame on a religion is ridiculous.

The RC actively supports, protects and promoted bad people and treats their victims appallingly.

It's like saying that Britain First is fine, it's just that they have a proportion of bad people in it, but no more than anywhere else.

Except the RC church does (present tense)much much more harm than Britain First.

Nofunkingworriesmate · 02/02/2018 21:22

pancake
Im assuming that quote wasnt said recently was it? Which is my point, it's what WAS said shockingly in the past, mass graves are historical not created recently ?
I'm not diminishing the trauma people are currently living with as I know someone who was raped for years by priest and the devastating effect that has had.
My point was the Catholic Church is aiming and successfully being the safe place that it always should have been and credit should be given where credit is due

sunshineintheclouds · 02/02/2018 21:22

Again you are saying a whole society or section of society is the same.
Hmm

mathanxiety · 02/02/2018 21:23

Wrt 'promoting intolerance'.

The RC church is perfectly aware of what intolerance is. There is a long litany of English and Irish martyrs to attest to that.

The church is well able to love the sinner and hate the sin, and to point out to children and members of congregations what this means. It means exercising the virtue of charity. Intolerance is not promoted.

PancakeInMaBelly · 02/02/2018 21:25

I'm talking about the PRESENT TENSE.
Their treatment of victims TODAY. Living victims are still victims TODAY and are still being treated badly by The church TODAY.
The effects of the RC church in the countries where they can still get away with their old ways. TODAY.

DreamyMcDreamy · 02/02/2018 21:25

Sunshine, some homework for you:Read your quote: "As long as they are not hurting me or anyone else" Then read the OP again.

I'm not Sunshine but completely agree with her/him. They have their beliefs, that are at odds with yours. So why on earth would you muscle in to their school, saying it's all a load of rubbish, and they need to think like you do?
If you were that opposed to it, you would find someone who does agree with your beliefs, or home school.
Extremely hypocritical to say others aren't to have alternate views when you're doing the exact same thing.
(I'm not Catholic btw, or even that religious.)

sunshineintheclouds · 02/02/2018 21:27

And.... It is what they choose to believe.
They can teach all they want , we thankfully well are meant to live in a country of free choice.
You can listen and you can choose not to believe it.
