To think that a dog up at the dining table is disgusting?

My mother and her fechking wank of a husband had my (beloved) little dog up at the table today just after we'd eaten. I almost barfed. I love the little lass and all that but she is a dog ffs! They were even feeding her the onion rings from the plate.

Does it matter? On their lap is horrible. On the table is beyond horrible. But both are horrible.

Her paws where on the table. Now I love the little dog with all my heart but I have to draw the line and it almost made me sick.

Or that thing some dog lover do - of putting one of the plates down so it can lick it. And then being prepared to eat off it themselves.

I used to have a pet rat that we used to allow out of her cage during the day, she would always scramble up our trouser legs and run up our arms to slurp tea and i have to admit to her taking food off my plate. This was some while ago mind, before i realised they leave a constant trail of wee wee - nice, but hey, none of us developed a disease through this. The only problem i have with a dog at the dinner table is one of discipline, a dog needs to know its place and not be allowed on the furniture. I bet you all think i'm minging now My rat was lovely but DD1 let her out in the garden one night when my dad was babysitting. She is forgiven though as this was about 10 years ago.

it's also not good for the dog. first because they need discipline and rules and second because they don't need onion rings.

I wouldnt say its disgusting but its not teaching the dog any discipline at all.

I hate it when our dogs sit near the table when we eat. It drives me up the wall.

it's a dog! if it needs feeding then it has a bowl! on the floor! into which one may insert ... dog food? im sure onion rings aren't that healthy for it either.

My dogs aren't allowed in my kitchen at all let alone at the dining table. nor are they allowed upstairs. people humanize their animals far too much.

I'm so glad I'm not overreacting. The dog wasn't even around the table. They called her. They don't usually even bother with her...she always is mad with her coz she likes to run around like a mad dog and he tries to fight toughly with her which she hates and must hurt her but he won't listen she even tries to bite him when he fights her.

Actually you'd be surprised how some dogs (I say that advisedly!) like rough play and will pretend to bite their owners in the course of it. It isn't necessarily hurting them.

(not quite the same, but when I'm freeschooling my horse, he pretends to kick out at me as we're running around the school together, because it's what he'd do when running about with his mates in the field. Never goes anywhere near me, I hasten to add!)

As for on the table - well, it's not wonderful, and he shouldn't have been given onion rings, but you said in your first sentence that you'd all finished eating - so why is this so disgusting?? Our cats will come and try it on once we've finished dinner and they get our plates to lick. Of course the plates go in the dishwasher afterwards...

You are not being unreasonable. We once went to a friends for dinner and at the end of the meal they let the dog eat any leftovers off th plate they had been eating from, made me feel sick to know that the dog had probably licked the plates we had eaten from at some point.

When I first came to Germany, I was really shocked that people bring dogs into restaurants. TBH I've never encountered a badly behaved dog in a restaurant but it did make me feel sick that I was eating food in a restaurant and next to me was someone else's dog lying on the floor. It didn't seem hygenic. I'm used to it now but it still doesn't feel right. Mind you dogs go everywhere here, including clothes shops and I've even seen a dog in our dentist's waiting room.

In a private household though, I don't have a problem with the dog of the house coming to the table after you've finished eating. So maybe I'm just weird...

To all of you who find the idea so offensive - what exactly do you think is going to happen - are you really going to catch some deadly disease? There is much anecdotal evidence to suggest that people who have dogs around their kids (and this means loads of face licking) have healthier kids as a result. My dd catches far fewer colds than her classmates and has only caught one stomach bug since she has been at school whereas her dogless friends average one per term. Also - what about cats - they walk over work surfaces all the time!!

Putting leftover scraps into the dog bowl is more than ok, but sharing table / plates just doesnt seem right to me!
