To think Kate Middleton needs to hire a make up artist

Does she still do her own make up?

It's awful. She either needs lessons or just hire an expert.

Oh you mean referring to her by her own name is snide in your opinion?! (I don't know where bosoms and fishes come into it).

How odd.

I do use my so called "married name" for some purposes, but I'm intensely relaxed about being addressed as or referred to by my birth name. Why would that be snide? Do you think women should subsume themselves in marriage? You do know that the act of marrying, (or using her husbands name,) doesn't alienate a woman from her legal rights to her own name?

You sound positively archaic. (Shall I make up some complicated insult about a hem clutching, pop-eyed old dragon?)

nannybeach · 01/02/2018 11:21

I didnt notice the makeup, was too busy looking at yesterdays paper where she looked liked she was wearing great grannies curtains, and today in strange blue velvet creation, does she pick her own clothes. Normally she looks lovelly, tired come-on, not like she has to run a house like us lesser mortals.Royalty and celebs are always going to be in the public eye, so yes we are going to have something to say about them. Lets face it our taxes pay a huge amount of money towards funding Kates clothes, bodyguards etc.

lottiegarbanzo · 01/02/2018 11:23

Birth names are increasingly used by and for women who choose to keep their maiden name after marriage. Did I miss the DoC making that declaration.

Kate Windsor is the obvious abbreviation. Princess Kate is wrong but affectionate and everyone would know who you were talking about.

To use Kate Middleton, if she hasn't chosen this style herself, is really rude, factually incorrect and seven years out of date.

Does it happen to any other member of the Royal Family? I don't think so.

When I hear 'Kate Middleton' my mind's eye conjurs an image of a speaker who is rude and resentful who wishes to put their subject down. Is that easier to understand?

BadTasteFlump · 01/02/2018 11:25

Because they want to put her down as a common commoner who got lucky, no better than the likes of us and 'keep her in her place', that's why

Nice try but no, actually. Personally as a republican I refuse to recognise royal titles so don't use them. William is William, Kate is Kate - and I just happened to use the only surname I know for her - the royals don't have real ones anyway do they? I refuse to call her Kate Cambridge - it sounds twatish IMO. If she's Kate Cambridge I'm Flump Hackney Grin

arghh21 · 01/02/2018 11:27

I would refer to her as Kate Middleton or maybe Duchess Kate. Not as a slight at all. I guess she was in the papers for so long as KM that it’s 2nd nature. I also would refer to William as William or Wills & also call Fergie, Fergie.

Not really, no. "Fish wife" sounds like an attempt to people down. Using a birth name just sounds normal.

Are you very old and stuffy?

Personally I'm so un-archaic that I didn't even bother to get married. I'm not the slightest bit interested in the Royals either.

I do think that women should be called what they choose to be called, not what other people choose for them and impose upon them.

I am also a bit interested in how people use language and what it means.

My instinct that someone using the name Kate Middleton to refer to the DoC was likely to be putting her down was certainly confirmed by the OP.

JuliannaBixby · 01/02/2018 11:33

I couldn't give less fucks about what she's called, nor do I understand all of the different names she seems to have Confused

I just resent the judgement that, by being a woman who exists in the world, she is duty bound to look as good as she can at all times, to the extent that she should employ someone specifically to follow her around, reapplying lipstick at 5 minute intervals.

If you think people refer to her as Kate Middleton as some sort of sneaky insult, you're barking.

DakotaWest · 01/02/2018 11:34

He's allowed to be balding
I couldn't be less of a fan of William, but what on earth is the poor guy supposed to do about that?

RoseWhiteTips · 01/02/2018 11:35

NewYearNiki

If i had a hairdresser, and her money Id look a damn sight better than her.

Oh sure.😂

PollyPerky · 01/02/2018 11:36

nannybeach Lets face it our taxes pay a huge amount of money towards funding Kates clothes, bodyguards etc.

I think you will find alot of it is self funded by their own money- William and Harry inherited their mother's assets. The royals cost each of us something like 50p a year - they bring in a huge amount of income for the treasury through taxation.

And if you want to talk about expenses, the same applies to politicians who have bodyguards for life, some have grace and favour apartments, and they get generous expenses for being Peers. Just get the whole thing in perspective.

Yep. The use of "need" in the OP is particularly bossy.

GetShitDone · 01/02/2018 11:37

But nobody knows her as Kate Windsor, so people wouldn't have clue who you were speaking about...

So the options are :

The Duchess of Cambridge (umm no thanks, bit formal)
Kate Windsor (sorry, who?)
Kate Mountbatten-Windsor (as above)
Kate Middleton (ok, so we all know who that is)
Kate, William's wife (nah, fuck that, she's a person not an appendage)

It's not uncommon for clarity to refer to people by their maiden name - for example talking about people from school, not everyone might know their married name. It's not disrespectful or snide. Nothing stunts dialogue like not having a clue who the other person is speaking about!

RoseWhiteTips · 01/02/2018 11:40

SisterNotCis

Because she should conform to the whatever the latest contouring/brows/shade of lip colour is favoured by celebs ?

But she comes from a middle class background, so that weird look would not be one she would favour anyway. There are other reasons.

JuliannaBixby · 01/02/2018 11:40

nannybeach: Lets face it our taxes pay a huge amount of money towards funding Kates clothes, bodyguards etc.

What, so the least she can do is be fucking flawlessly photogenic?

You are aware we're talking about humans here, right?

Fucking hell.

lottiegarbanzo · 01/02/2018 11:46

Or Kate Cambridge? She and William are often referred to collectively as The Cambridges.

I find it interesting that someone upthread who wished to disagree with me on the subject of putting people down, chose to do so via the put-down that I must be very old.

Ho hum.

PortiaCastis · 01/02/2018 11:50

Kate comes from an extremely wealthy family and probably has her own fortune stashed in trust funds etc so would still be wealthy without the taxpayers input, also a lot of her day to day expenditure comes from the Duchy of Cornwall

RoseWhiteTips · 01/02/2018 11:50

AngelsSins

Oh for Christ sake, she's not a show pony, she's not a model, she's not an ambassador for Dior, she why the fuck does she need to have professional make up? Prince William looks a fucking state, but that's ok is it? He's allowed to be balding and buck toothed, but god forbid his wife looks like a normal human too....

DakotaWest · 01/02/2018 11:51

It has been reported several times that she doesn't like to be called Kate, so technically she should be called Catherine, which happens to be her name after all.

I don't think anyone using the name "Kate" is doing it in a derogatory kind of way.

RoseWhiteTips · 01/02/2018 11:52

Sorry that went too soon!

No, Prince William does not “look a state” as you put it. He looks perfectly fine, he dresses well and his new haircut suits him.

Battleax · 01/02/2018 11:54

Or Kate Cambridge? She and William are often referred to collectively as The Cambridges.

Oh stop Grin

PasDeDeux · 01/02/2018 11:55

YABU and ridiculous to feel so strongly about somebody elses makeup. Calm down and worry about your own life.
