Not pole! Settle an argument between me, DH and lodger!

The post was in response to the OP's post asking how to pronounce "droll"

MongerTruffle · 31/01/2018 16:55

I say poll, pole, doll, dole, troll, toll the same, but the -oll sound in polling I say differently.

OrangeMan · 31/01/2018 16:56

@amusedbush thanks for the clarification. Thought it was a new word I'd not heard off

Want2beme · 31/01/2018 16:59

I would naturally pronounce it poll not pole, but I know that pole is the correct pronunciation. I'm a Londoner and my accent is "well spoken" , so I'm told.

TheCatsPaws · 31/01/2018 17:01

How’re people saying doll as dole? Confused

Clem7 · 31/01/2018 17:03

Never heard poll pronounced like doll before. Same for toll, with the exception of some relatives with strong Welsh accents.

Have heard troll both ways but usually rhyming with roll.

Crispbutty · 31/01/2018 17:05

So how would you roll a ball?

peachypips · 31/01/2018 18:09

Roll exposes a flaw in my own logic of my pronunciation.

I'm going to pretend to the males in my household that everyone on MN said that it was pronounced 'poll' not 'pole' and that everyone was laughing at them for thinking it.

Ha Ha! OP Grin I love your strategy.

And let's all remember THERE IS NO LOGIC!

Eolian · 31/01/2018 18:19

Surely it's pretty simple to sort these arguments out. Get a dictionary and look the words up. My OED says that 'toll' and 'poll' do indeed rhyme with 'roll' rather than with 'doll' and 'loll'.

Peachypips - relying on logic to deal with English pronunciation is futile anyway. What would you do about rough, cough, through, though, enough, drought and bought and thorough?

RoseWhiteTips · 31/01/2018 18:26

As in pole.

Butterymuffin · 31/01/2018 18:49

David Dimbleby pronounces it 'pole' every time he reveals the exit poll at an election. Does anyone want to disagree with the OED and Dimbleby?

peachypips · 01/02/2018 13:44

Bollocks you are right Eolian.

Blow that David Dimbleby. And blow the OED. I'm right- I know I am in my heart.
