To think the poll is pronounced poll...

Not pole! Settle an argument between me, DH and lodger!

DH pronounces "troll" to rhyme with "doll" and once launched a loud and mocking public obloquy at me for pronouncing it to rhyme with "coal". He looked a bit stumped when I asked him why it was so stupid to pronounce "troll" differently from "roll", then tried to say it was because it's a Norse word Confused

YourVagesty · 31/01/2018 10:06

I would say poll - to rhyme with doll. Quite surprised that the consensus is so heavily against me. I'm from Shropshire and am told I'm well spoken, i.e. no regional accent. But there might be v subtle traces of 'ooo-arrrr' farmeryness around the edges of my accent. Rural Shropshire can be quite Somerset/ Bristolian sounding.

Might be part of that? What say you West-Country dwellers?

drspouse · 31/01/2018 10:07

(Apparently the often pronunciation has flip-flopped over the years).

OOOOOOOOOOO · 31/01/2018 10:09

Pole to rhyme with dole
Poll to rhyme with doll

What about toll and troll?

Toll to rhyme with doll

Troll to rhyme with doll.

IMO

All
My kids think it's troll to rhyme with pole. 👻

QuimReaper · 31/01/2018 10:10

*To rhyme with "roll", not differently from "roll"...

QuimReaper · 31/01/2018 10:11

x-post OOO Grin

QuimReaper · 31/01/2018 10:12

On the "poll" question though, I'd definitely say "pole-ing station" but I think I'd say "poll-like-doll tax". I don't know why.

calmandbright · 31/01/2018 10:13

S.wales - pronounced pole here

amusedbush · 31/01/2018 10:14

But I think it's supposed to be poll as in doll. Like in the motorway toll payment areas.

But that's pronounced tole? It doesn't rhyme with doll Confused

UpstartCrow · 31/01/2018 10:15

What NoCureForLove said.
The poll on an animal is different from a poll of the electorate.

amusedbush · 31/01/2018 10:15

And while I'm at it, "troll" is like "trole", not "trawl".

StormTreader · 31/01/2018 10:22

Might be part of that? What say you West-Country dwellers?

Im west country, and I definitely say poll like "pole", "pole-ing station" and "pole tax".

tellitlikeitispls · 31/01/2018 10:22

I say poll as in Polly. A short 'o'.
Pole as in vole. With a long 'o'. Like in 'over'
Different sounds. I was brought up in the north east.

FluffyMcCloud · 31/01/2018 10:23

Doll and dole sound the same to me. Roll, poll, doll, troll, toll all rhyme. They also rhyme with pole, sole, role, and hole. And goal, foal and coal. And bowl. And Noel.

Trinity66 · 31/01/2018 10:24

I'm Irish and would pronounce Poll and Pole the same, I'm pretty sure that's the correct way? I've never heard anyone pronounce it differently to that?

peachypips · 31/01/2018 10:28

Argh that means I'm totally in the minority!

I say poll as in doll, not as in dole.

And I say polling station like I'd say dolling station!

Am from North London originally. Does ANYONE say poll!

OP posts:
drspouse · 31/01/2018 10:30

I used to work with someone from Yorkshire who said "yogga" for "yoga", like some hybrid of jogging and yoga.

amusedbush · 31/01/2018 10:33

OP, I've NEVER heard anyone say anything other than pole-ing station Grin

MrsPreston11 · 31/01/2018 10:33

@drspouse that made me think of anchorman

Redpony1 · 31/01/2018 10:34

I say poll, pole, doll, dole, troll, roll, toll all the same? I don't particularly have a regional accent either.

Never heard anyone say it differently! Will ask around the office and see if i just haven't been paying attention...

MayFayner · 31/01/2018 10:36

scary that's all so interesting. The tree cutters- that must be where the surname Pollard comes from?

I say pole btw OP.

peachypips · 31/01/2018 10:36

But troll, toll, droll are all pronounced like doll - not trole, tole and drole?

Are all my -oll pronunciations wrong?!

OP posts:
amusedbush · 31/01/2018 10:37

Are all my -oll pronunciations wrong?!

Yes. I would say trole, tole and drole. I've honestly never heard them pronounced any other way!

amusedbush · 31/01/2018 10:38

In fact, there's a song in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia that says "you've gotta pay the troll toll if you wanna get into this boy's soul"... and it all rhymes.

(The song makes sense if you watch the episode, I promise Grin)

HolgerDanske · 31/01/2018 10:39

It’s close to pole but not exactly the same. Think of troll, I guess.
