Not pole! Settle an argument between me, DH and lodger!

OP posts:
Ifailed · 31/01/2018 09:30

To add to the confusion, I pronounce polish (as to clean something) differently than Polish to mean of the country Poland.

SumThucker · 31/01/2018 09:33

They are pronounced differently Ifailed...

kaytee87 · 31/01/2018 09:34

@Ifailed well that's correct then

ObiJuanKenobi · 31/01/2018 09:36

@Ifailed they're homographic words so it's correct to pronounce them differently (like bass/bass, bow/bow, wound/wound)

Fromage · 31/01/2018 09:37

Pole.

Rhymes with troll, roll and toll.

Who is pronouncing it to rhyme with doll?

Butterymuffin · 31/01/2018 09:38

It's like pole, not like doll.

Sparklemummyx0x0x · 31/01/2018 09:38

I would say pole as in pole-ing station. But I think it's supposed to be poll as in doll.
Like in the motorway toll payment areas.

Ifailed · 31/01/2018 09:39

my (glaringly) obvious point is that although spelt the same, it's a difference pronunciation which most people will follow, yet it would appear that poll = pole for some.

Firesuit · 31/01/2018 09:41

I'm surprised at the answers. Poll is likey polly without the y. Not the same as pole.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 31/01/2018 09:41

Pole

WorldWideWanderer · 31/01/2018 09:43

We all say poll in our family - rhymes with doll.
Pole (rhymes with dole) is how we say the South Pole.

Firesuit · 31/01/2018 09:45

Rhymes with troll, roll and toll

I agree that troll and role rhyme with pole. But toll doesn't. It rhymes with doll and poll.

Firesuit · 31/01/2018 09:45

and roll

MrsKwazii · 31/01/2018 09:45

I’ve worked in polling stations before (south-east) and heard it pronounced both ways, but the majority pronounciation was pole, so sounding like pole card, pole-ing station and ‘the poles have closed’.

Lemonnaise · 31/01/2018 09:46

Roll, roll, doll, poll are all the same pronunciation to me

But roll and doll and poll are all pronounced differently are they not?

Poll - pole
Roll - Roe-ll
Doll- doh-ll

spiderlight · 31/01/2018 09:47

There's a bit at the top of a horse's head that's a poll to rhyme with doll, but a survey-type poll is pronounced pole - never heard it pronounced any other way (S Wales).

mumpoints · 31/01/2018 09:47

Poll pronounced pole

NoCureForLove · 31/01/2018 09:48

The only poll to rhyme with doll is the name for the bit of a horse - between it's ears.
Your poll is pole.

Shadow666 · 31/01/2018 09:48

My online dictionary only gives the pole pronunciation

YesILikeItToo · 31/01/2018 09:48

I love these threads so much!

NoCureForLove · 31/01/2018 09:48

X posts spider!

Fromage · 31/01/2018 09:49

For those who pronounce it to rhyme with doll, where are you from, and how would you describe your accent?

ilovekitkats · 31/01/2018 09:49

It's pronounced "pole" as confirmed by various online dictionaries where you can listen to the pronunciation.

When you vote, you go to the pole-ing booth, not the polling booth.........

MrsPreston11 · 31/01/2018 09:50

Yep toll (like a fee) rhymes with doll. (Except now I think of it I say "taking it's toll" and then I pronounce it "tole" - Oh God....this is hurting my brain, that's clearly me being an idiot though.)

Although the more I say it I think I'd naturally say "tole" but because you hear "toll" on US movies etc it's toll if you over think it...

Lemonnaise · 31/01/2018 09:50

Um okBlush, I've just realised that poll and roll are pronounced the same, ignore the above.
