AIBU to go to Costa four times a week?

Reading all the threads about wasting money on coffees / mobile phones, I am wondering if most people would consider having a coffee in Costa four times a week an extravagance? I can afford it but am interested in hearing whether most people would consider this an unnecessary extravagance as my Dm and Mil are horrified at the wasting of money??

A reusable cup? Costas have cups and saucers in my experience.

Trills · 29/01/2018 17:01

Depends on whether you can afford it and how much enjoyment you get out of it.

If you're just getting it in a takeaway cup and drinking it on the go it's less enjoyment-for-your-money than if you are sitting somewhere and reading a book or chatting to a friend or people-watching.

MichaelBendfaster · 29/01/2018 17:03

YANBU except that IMO Costa isn't very nice. If you're going to go to a big chain cafe, Pret's better, I think, and generally very nice staff too. Caffe Nero's OK too.

sahknowme · 29/01/2018 17:06

Do they give you a discount if you bring your own cup?

Sparklingbrook · 29/01/2018 17:06

The Costas here are quite nice. One was in a building that used to be a bank, but that closed down.Sad
One is attached to a Tesco so zero for ambience but handy if you need shopping.Grin

We have an independent one that is lovely though.

Olga81 · 29/01/2018 17:08

I used to have a deal with myself, if I biked into work rather than driving (5 km) I could have a Nero Coffee. So my coffee habit was actually saving me 3 pounds a day as no need to pay for parking Grin

But agree that Nero is superior to Costa, free coffee on a Tuesday if you're an O2 customer and every 10th coffee free

Olga81 · 29/01/2018 17:12

I do think it's funny how some things are thought of as extravagant and wasteful and others as just normal when it's all just personal choice.

I haven't been to the hairdressers in 5 years, that buys a lot of coffee yet I'm the extravagant one!

TheFaerieQueene · 29/01/2018 17:12

It is up to you. I always look for independent coffee shops when out as I would rather support them than huge chains that are all the same and generally look tired.

LaLaLand84 · 29/01/2018 17:13

I get a latte from my local coffee shop every day on my way back from dropping DS off at nursery, I can afford it and I enjoy it so why not. Nice to read a magazine with before I brave the cold for the 2 hour dog walk i have to do everyday

TonTonMacoute · 29/01/2018 17:16

It’s a bit of relaxation that benefits you and that you enjoy. So long as your kids aren’t starving and have their arses hanging out of their ragged clothes, why on earth should you feel guilty about it. Go for it!

BrownTurkey · 29/01/2018 17:19

I guess it would be a way to cut costs if you need to save money. Do you need to save money? Or want to save up for something? Most people on a tight budget don't buy lunch every day either, they bring sandwiches or leftovers.

LockedOutOfMN · 29/01/2018 17:20

Life's too short, OP, have a Costa every day if that's your treat. Otherwise what do we go to work for?!

Oly5 · 29/01/2018 17:24

Of course not. Life is short

LagunaBubbles · 29/01/2018 17:33

Not extravagant but god awful coffee, so why would you?

Presumably because OP likes it and its close to her work?

Supernothing22 · 29/01/2018 17:40

Yes and no.

Yes because I find the coffee substandard but if it was from the independent shop near work then 4 woukd be fine

coffeeforone · 29/01/2018 18:02

YANBU if you can afford it. I buy a coffee most days and don’t see it as an extravagance.

Costa would be my last choice as I prefer others, but I’d choose it if there weren’t other options around.

If you want the best of both worlds then I do recommend the Pret 99p filter!

PinkAvocado · 29/01/2018 18:28

Do you use a reusable cup? (Sorry if I missed that!) if so then YANBU. I think I’d try to support an independent but if you like the coffee more there than anywhere else than why not.

Sparklingbrook · 29/01/2018 18:34

Why is everyone fixated on the reusable cup? Have I missed something? Sorry if I have but AFAIK the OP sits in and would have the ultimate reusable china cup and saucer or latte glass.

PeonyTruffle · 29/01/2018 18:37

YANBU. I go to Starbucks 3 times a week, I’m all for a skinny caramel hot chocolate!

ArcheryAnnie · 29/01/2018 18:38

If it works for you, and you have the money, then great!

(But only if you sit in. YABU if you use takeaway cups.)

Cherrycokewinning · 29/01/2018 18:38

I don’t think it’s unusual at all. In all the offices I’ve worked in people pick up a coffee on the way in then there might be a coffee round for take outs a few times a week during the working day. Lunch time we usually go to itsu or pret and you’ve spent £8 on lunch before you know it. Seems normal to me

gluteustothemaximus · 29/01/2018 18:43

If you enjoy it, and can afford it, why not?

If you're moaning you have no money or can't afford xyz, then you might be unreasonable as if you gave up coffee, then you could.

Hairdresser: once in the last 15 years
Coffee shop: twice in 37 years

We did get a cracking bargain of a coffee machine delonghi and it makes lattes as good as a coffee shop so we're happy.

Stickaforkinimdone · 29/01/2018 18:52

Not extravagant at all! No different to going anywhere else every day for your lunch surely?
I used to have an hour and a half commute to work every day and there was a costa right outside the station by my office, hence I would be in there every morning for the first coffee of the day!

Really don't see the issue-enjoy!

gussyfinknottle · 29/01/2018 19:00

If you can afford it and it gets you through then go right ahead. If you are struggling for cash you might need to find a cheaper comforter.

LockedOutOfMN · 29/01/2018 19:05

And Pret filter is 49p if you bring your own cup - including at the airport stores!
