To think Ann Widdecombe is truly vile

Celeb Big Brother.

Anyone else saying the things she has said would have had people screaming at them.

She doesn't think women should work if they have children.

She doesn't agree with gay marriage.

She thinks being gay is disgusting.

She is so backwards in her thinking, she is truly horrible.

Now whilst I don't agree with the language that Andrew used about her, I agree with his sentiment and I can't believe everyone is pussy footing around her!

Celebrity is defined as "a famous person, especially in entertainment or sport" or "the state of being well-known".

Ann Widdecombe is certainly well-known in the UK. She's not showbiz, but that doesn't mean she isn't a celebrity. She's better known than that Jess girl, or someone who was on the last series of The Apprentice.

I disagree with a lot of her views but I like her all the same. She is a strong woman who has no fear of saying what she thinks. Good on her. I'm not in favour of policing people's thoughts and I like my own views to be challenged. If you don't allow your views to be challenged you are allowing yourself to be brainwashed. Thinking that she is gay just because she is celibate is totally ridiculous. I have been celibate for many years and it is not because I am gay.

Hoppinggreen · 28/01/2018 12:52

She has said that she doesn’t agree with Gay marriage and I imagine that this is probably due to her religion
I dont agree with her view but I defend her right to hold it and I don’t find it offensive.
She’s not thick for holding a view that some people don’t agree with

Purplerain101 · 28/01/2018 12:54

I don’t agree with things she feels strongly about like gay marriage, abortion and Brexit. But I’m sure there would be plenty of my beliefs that she wouldn’t agree with either

TheDevilMadeMeDoIt · 28/01/2018 12:56

It doesn't make sense, from what I know of Ann, that she'd even appear on a naff programme like this. I'd like to bet she doesn't watch this sort of thing. But £100, 000 did somone say... Grin

I suspect she does things like this (remember Strictly?) for fun, and to show other people that she does have another side to her.

I've never watched CBB in my life. But given Ronald's post above, I think I may start voting for AW.

What an awful country it would be if we all had to conform to the main view and be afraid to voice our own. Most religions have beliefs that others don't agree with. If people think she's "vile" for defending her religious beliefs more fool them. She's hardly calling for gays to be thrown off the highest building.

I don't agree with most (?many) of AW's views, but she has a good SoH & is always respectful of other viewpoints. She also treats people well, and as individuals, in a very Catholic ("love the sinner even if you dislike the sin") way. I can admire her for that. I'm glad people came to her defence in this thread.

I think people easily forget many of the deep Catholic teachings about social justice, equity, fairness, anti-death penalty, etc.

mirialis · 28/01/2018 13:08

She said she changed her mind for this series because of the "Year of the Woman" theme.

Her views on capital punishment make sense but I still disagree with her. I'm with the Pope on this one. I don't think her views on the death penalty are vile.

InsomniacAnonymous · 28/01/2018 13:57

"She's held these ideas since the 1800s"

I've told you a million times, don't exaggerate!

RonaldMcDonald · 28/01/2018 13:59

The other thing I like about Anne is that she knows how to argue a point responsibly
She speaks about the thing in question - speaks about what she believes she knows and then gives her views on it. This is timebound and focussed on that one point at hand
Many people could learn from that

I doesn't become 'oh but what about' - she doesn't conflate points together to try to make a picture that isn't there or to win at any costs
She doesn't seem motivated by beating people in argument but rather by discourse - sharing thoughts and leaving the bits where there is disagreement on the table. She understands that people can have wildly differing views but still respect or care for each other
She enters the next conversation fresh and without judgement

I think she is a great example of someone able to not personalise everything. Possibly a great example of a woman or learning and faith
I have only seen her return to things to apologise for mistakes

Btw - many of the views she holds are the absolute opposite of mine but I respect the way she is behaving.
I think that Shane Malika and Wayne will now stir opinion against her in terms of her being homophobic, heartless, broken etc
I think she is anything but and it will be a shame

BeyondWitchbitchterf · 28/01/2018 14:04

Age of consent - Ann believes 16 is too young for any sexual consent. Heterosexual included.
= not homophobic

Adoption - ideal family unit is man plus woman, see section 28 and gay marriage
= not necessarily homophobic

picklemepopcorn · 28/01/2018 14:05

Her views are inflexible- she seems a very rigid thinker.
Marriage has been a contract between one man and one woman, for the procreation of children and preservation of property and lineage, for hundreds (thousands?) of years.
Priests have been Male for almost 2000 years.
It's a bit much to expect everyone to accept it within a matter of ten/twenty years.

If you judge people on what they do, then she has supported her house mates, been kind to them, stood up for them regardless of their age or sexuality.

Unlike some of the younger ones who have bitched and moaned behind people's backs.

She said Meghan would be trouble because she is older, divorced, American, etc. I think she's wrong, but not racist. The usual candidates (fergie and Diana) weren't successful, so nothing wrong with looking wider.

wonderingstar01 · 28/01/2018 14:52

I don't agree with many of her opinions but that doesn't mean she shouldn't have them or that they are right to her.

She didn't say she thinks being gay is disgusting. She just doesn't like PDAs regardless of who they are between.

One thing she has done is made some of these people think about the way they act and how their lack of self-restraint and self-respect can be perceived by others.

Despite her hard-line opinions on some things, I think her presence has brought real benefit to the other people in the house.
