It's just moved close to midnight

The Cuban missile crisis was that close to global nuclear war. Which is the main ( although not the only) measure on the doomsday clock.

Climate change won't wipe us out suddenly, but sooner or later we will be too.many to feed or to maintain the luxurious lifestyle that you, I and everyone else on here has. Unless we are prepared to have less and use less.

That means waste nothing, dont fly, don't take jobs that mean lots of driving, don't buy stuff that has come a long way, use less imported food, less heating, fewer clothes, fewer gadgets, don't waste food on pets, no non essentials such as makeup and so on.

ArcheryAnnie · 26/01/2018 21:05

Hear, hear, specialsubject.

StupidMcStupidFace · 26/01/2018 21:10

Why do you not think climate change will wipe us out suddenly special? It could very easily wipe us out suddenly, thawing permafrost could release huge amounts of methane into the atmosphere and make this planet pretty uninhabitable pretty quickly.

taskmaster · 26/01/2018 21:32

Task what aren’t you grasping about my current circumstances being more of a worry and I’m sorrh more important to me than current affairs in the world?

I don't see why you don't have enough space in your (I'm sure perfectly intelligent) mind to think about more than one thing. Or understand that even if you don't give a shit its still a real thing that other people need to worry about.

The biggest threat to humanity is climate change, but because we can't see it (and because we don't really see its effects in the UK like people are in the developing world) we stick to threats right in front of us, like nuclear war

Yep, which is why climate change is one of the reasons the clock has moved closer to midnight.

It would be nice if people had the most basic handle on the topic before pontificating, wouldn't it?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 27/01/2018 12:06

Crikey special Well fielded! Smile

specialsubject · 27/01/2018 12:21

Thank you. Smile

Climate change won't be as sudden as nuclear Apocalypse. Anyone on a low lying island in the Caribbean, or indeed in a new build on a flood plain in the UK, may tell you it started some time ago.

Methane in permafrost won't be sudden but it all makes it worse. And there's some asteroid issues too, although I believe the really concerning ones aren't for a few hundred years.

Time to stop equating science with geek, isn't it?

SilenceIsBroken · 27/01/2018 20:34

"Time to stop equating science with geek, isn't it?"

Yep. And evironment with lefty hippies.

specialsubject · 27/01/2018 20:51

I think the latter is done. Long way to go on the former. Especially on mn which encourages ' science and maths are not feminine'.

Lweji · 28/01/2018 02:01

Especially on mn which encourages ' science and maths are not feminine'.

Where?

Coconutspongexo · 28/01/2018 06:25

Because the chances of me dying within the next month due to my health is a lot greater than this. Leaving my son with no parent. Sorry if that trumps climate change and nuclear war/apocolypse to me but I can change my chances of dying due to my health. Hence being more focused on that.

diodati · 28/01/2018 07:40

How could anyone play candy crush on a plane? Don't you need wifi?

Geez Taskmaster you have made your 'point' and really need to back off now Hmm

Dipping I am sorry to hear you are so unwell and completely understand that this must take priority in your life right now, particularly any worries you may have around treatment, family, work, keeping a roof over your head, etc.

And of course it doesn't mean that you don't give a shit about the prospect of nucleur war or hacking or climate change... it just means that you cannot afford to spend precious mental and emotional resources worrying about it. Completely understandable and a sensible response imo.

Thank you for understanding sea at least someone does 😂

diodati · 28/01/2018 09:17

Task has "issues", clearly.

SilenceIsBroken · 28/01/2018 09:34

"Especially on mn which encourages ' science and maths are not feminine'."

Lol, what?

specialsubject · 28/01/2018 10:21

Just look!

No science topic, just ' geek stuff' and that is buried. Endless fuckwit diets. Endless fuckwit beauty stuff when it is all lies. Nothing about everyday maths to stop people getting ripped off ( eg the energy switch model which is a lie)

All aimed at women.

taskmaster · 28/01/2018 12:25

issues with people dismissing science and experts and serious things we should all care about, yes. We should all have issues with that. We're heading for Idiocricy here.

specialsubject · 28/01/2018 14:02

Idiocricy. That's fantastic! Using that!!

Lweji · 28/01/2018 18:18

That is not exactly:

"Especially on mn which encourages ' science and maths are not feminine'."

I don't come here for the science discussions. There are other fora and social media for that.
And you can get quite scientific posts from people who do know about those subjects. It tends to be "In the news", though, as it's usually about news pieces that interest the public.
