It's just moved close to midnight

Apparently the ozone damage is the least it has been in years.

Weather modification is real however, so that probably doesn’t help.

All those people in the 'know'. Great. Either share your knowledge, or keep it sectret. Don't share sensationalism without explanation.

Everyone involved with the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists spends their lives trying to share their knowledge. That's what they do. You can subscribe the the Bulletin for free, if you want explanation, ^DressAndGo*.

I'm left wondering about the true motive. Oooh! A Conspiracy!!

Sadly a very small Google gives you lost of info...

"The clock was originally conceived by a group of atomic scientists who had been involved with the Manhattan Project, the scheme responsible for the first nuclear weapons. The scientists regularly produced a bulletin detailing progress and updates in nuclear weaponry and the clock was first designed as an illustration for the cover of the first edition... The Bulletin's clock is not a gauge to register the ups and downs of the international power struggle; it is intended to reflect basic changes in the level of continuous danger in which mankind lives in the nuclear age"

Wired's article is quite good, including a critique

It's been pretty close since 2001. There's been a lot of propaganda over past century and I think this is part of it. WW2 showed us they'll stop at nothing. Colloborate if you will.

taskmaster · 26/01/2018 16:16

Would worrying help you pilot the plane through the storm even though you can't fly a plane? Would worrying enable you to land the plane? Is worrying about the clock moving closer to 12 going to stop wars, terrorism, mad dictators, any other drama you can think of? No, of course it isn't

if more people understood what the clock represents maybe they would do things like not vote for Trump and his ilk, him being one of the main reasons the clock has moved closer to midnight?

Yes, worrying about and caring about these things can absolutely make a difference. If enough of us did that we wouldn;t be in such a precarious position in the first place.

Why do so many people say oh this doesn;t matter, it has nothing to do with me, why should I care? Or pretend they don't know what they are talking about, another reason it doesn't matter? This is why we are in such trouble, because there are so many people like you who don't care, don't listen to experts, won't do anything, and vote in complete morons who have the power to kill us all.

Try a little worrying for a change. Open your eyes, give a shit about what is happening in the world for a change. Listen to people who know a lot more than you do. Be the change you want to see in the world.

Coconutspongexo · 26/01/2018 16:34

Task because people aren’t worrying about this doesn’t mean they don’t give a shit about what is going on around them :s

taskmaster · 26/01/2018 16:45

It does, when they dismiss it out of hand and don't even take a minute to understand what its about before they say its ridiculous.

Coconutspongexo · 26/01/2018 16:47

No it doesn’t! I’m not worrying about this as I have more pressing things to worry about but I do give a shit about climate change and Russia, N.Korea and Trump.

taskmaster · 26/01/2018 16:48

It's about climate change, NKorea and Trump. That's the point. Hmm

makeourfuture · 26/01/2018 16:55

Absolutely.

We can Make Our Future!

Coconutspongexo · 26/01/2018 17:05

You’re not seeing my point for fuck sake. I give a shit about them but I’m not worrying about them when I have other things to worry about.

specialsubject · 26/01/2018 17:07

I can't do anything about trump ( not an american., no vote) or north Korea. I can do my little bit to reduce climate change, so I take action there.

taskmaster · 26/01/2018 17:15

Giving a shit, worrying, same thing. If you are giving a shit, you have to be at least slightly worried or you haven't grasped what it is about. That is literally the point of the clock, to make a stark metaphor about the danger level.
If you have children, how can you be completely unbothered that they are less likely to grow up than you were?

Helllllooooooo · 26/01/2018 17:27

No need to worry when we are all dead and look like rashers of bacon

specialsubject · 26/01/2018 17:28

I don't have kids ( the best contribution to saving resources) but those who are kids now actually have better odds. Check your history.

Coconutspongexo · 26/01/2018 17:30

I have a son and my main worry at the minute is that I’m here to see him grow up at all and that he has a mum. I’m not going to worry about things I can’t control.

StupidMcStupidFace · 26/01/2018 18:10

Could you ellaborate on kids having better odds special? I’m not quite sure what you’re referring to.

specialsubject · 26/01/2018 18:17

Cuban missile crisis!

taskmaster · 26/01/2018 18:23

Check the doomsday clock, they don't.

taskmaster · 26/01/2018 18:24

I've explained how you can be part of the control. But you don't care, so just carry on with that.

StupidMcStupidFace · 26/01/2018 19:19

I still don’t understand special. I’m not being antagonistic I just genuinely don’t understand what you mean. How does the Cuban missile crisis mean that children are more likely to survive a doomsday event than adults?

StupidMcStupidFace · 26/01/2018 19:32

Oh, hang on are you saying that children are more likely to survive because there was the Cuban missile crisis which was worse than things are now? Because that’s wrong.

In the early 60’s the climate was probably still salvageable. The oceans weren’t deoxygenised and becoming entire wastelands that is changing the worlds weather patterns. Carbon was still way below the unreturnable 350ppm. Nucleur war can (hopefully anyway) be avoided. Climate change causing mass extinction and migration can’t. You’re bonkers I’d ou think that won’t have an incredibly negative impact on the lives of children.

Coconutspongexo · 26/01/2018 20:32

Task what aren’t you grasping about my current circumstances being more of a worry and I’m sorrh more important to me than current affairs in the world?

SilenceIsBroken · 26/01/2018 20:39

The biggest threat to humanity is climate change, but because we can't see it (and because we don't really see its effects in the UK like people are in the developing world) we stick to threats right in front of us, like nuclear war.

LEELULUMPKIN · 26/01/2018 20:45

I get that people worry about this sort of thing and just saying "don't worry" is totally pointless. It's like telling someone who is scared of spiders not to be afraid.

Does it help you OP to think that this planet we live on WILL disappear one day, be it man made destruction or by physics?

It certainly helps me to look out to the universe on a wonderfully clear night. It really does help put things in perspective of how insignificant and fleeting our existence is.

Maybe try that and see if it helps calm your fears.
