It's just moved close to midnight

I think it would be naive to pretend it's not there, but what's the point of worrying about it?

To worry about the doomsday clock
ManchesterGin · 25/01/2018 22:09

I think I am probably BU to not even know such a thing existed!

gamerchick · 25/01/2018 22:10

The what??!! There’s a doomsday clock? Is that why we’re getting a slew of end of the world films atm? Like some sort of subliminal conditioning?

*covers self in tin foil’

PolaDeVeboise · 25/01/2018 22:18

Well I never. Every day's a school day! Luckily, I don't do worrying.

BMW6 · 25/01/2018 22:21

We're doomed........ I tell ye we're all DOOMED
So what can you do about it?

TweedAddict · 25/01/2018 22:22

A doomsday Clock! I thought that was some mavel superhero thing.

Definitely going on the next things I should of known but didn’t thread!

Thegruffaloswifey · 25/01/2018 22:25

Interestingly the doomsday clock was 7 minutes to midnight during the Cuban missile crisis, which still is the closest point we got to WW3 and nuclear war.

My life flashed before my eyes this evening when I fell down the stairs slipping on one of my ds toys....this is the kind of mundane shit we need to be worried about.

Battleax · 25/01/2018 22:32

It's a representation.

When you say you're worrying, what do you mean?

Youshallnotpass · 26/01/2018 09:21

The Doomsday clock is about as accurate at predicting the end of the world as the bible is.

It's based on theory and conjecture, It's been close to midnight for ages. Try not to worry about it - it shouldn't even really be a thing imo.

taskmaster · 26/01/2018 11:49

No it isn't. The bible is just made up stories, the doomsday clock is a large panel of the experts in their field.

You don't understand it at all, clearly!

Coconutspongexo · 26/01/2018 11:58

Taskmaster are you always this much of a dick?

taskmaster · 26/01/2018 12:00

For pointing out that you're talking nonsense I'm a dick?

Have you quite understood Aibu?

Lweji · 26/01/2018 12:03

It's a risk estimate, not an actual clock by an all seeing being.

Still, it means there are reasons for concern. Some we can do something about. Others not so much. (Except not vote for arseholes)

StupidMcStupidFace · 26/01/2018 12:05

I find it terrifying. I also find it terrifying that so few people think it’s an issue. I will be truly amazed if humanity exists in its current form in ten years. Just because it’s difficult to imagine doesn’t mean it’s not true. Minutes before the announcements of wwi and wwii people were refusing to believe they would be a war. Then when it was announced it would all be over for Christmas.

I don’t know what there is to be done about it but it’s fucking chilling.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/01/2018 12:07

You get used to it, if you take time to read about it and the risks it measures.

I have lived a lot of my teen/early 20s at 3ish minutes to midnight. When, despite the lack if internet, the relevant information was published and promulgated quickly!

You have to become inured to it... or you won't function properly.

Of course, living in places with semi regular bomb scares, no street bins and occasion sightings of fully armed military bods does tend to blunt The Fear a little.

Coconutspongexo · 26/01/2018 12:11

You’re being quite condescending though

‘You don’t understand it all, clearly’

taskmaster · 26/01/2018 12:12

That's not condescending when the poster clearly does not understand what the clock is.

Coconutspongexo · 26/01/2018 12:14

She does understand it though because it is theories Hmm

taskmaster · 26/01/2018 12:16

She doesn't because she thinks its as accurate the bible.

also, do you know what theories mean in this context?

Coconutspongexo · 26/01/2018 12:16

Of course I know what theories mean, why are you attempting to talk down to me?

Titsywoo · 26/01/2018 12:18

Interestingly the doomsday clock was 7 minutes to midnight during the Cuban missile crisis, which still is the closest point we got to WW3 and nuclear war.

That's because they only update it once a year in January and by the time that came around it was all sorted. If that had happened in January it probably would have been about 30 seconds to midnight!

taskmaster · 26/01/2018 12:21

Because you don't seem to understand the conversation, so I am making it easier for you!

this "it's just some peeps with some theories, innit" bollocks is not accurate. Perhaps if you read the link?

Coconutspongexo · 26/01/2018 12:23

Who is talking like that?

No one - get out of your own arse.

ChickenPaws · 26/01/2018 12:24

In 1983 we were seconds away from midnight, only no one realised at the time.

Google Stanislav Petrov, the man who saved the world.

You’re more likely to be run over by the bus and then die waiting for the non existent ambulance to turn up to take you to the failing hospital which has no staff.

taskmaster · 26/01/2018 12:24

Whatevs. No talking to people who don't want to listen and are happy in their ignorance.
