To be sick of people complaining that they are freezing

When it's actually about 23' in the office. Just fed up of hearing it. I do wonder if it's because people heat their homes excessively and so most places end up feeling colder in comparison.

Also, outside. Temperatures have been mild yesterday and today compared to last week, when it genuinely was sub zero and people had grounds to complain. But people are still moaning that it's freezing when it's 10 degrees warmer!

Don't get it!

I agree. Put a flipping jumper on! I end up wearing a t-shirt to work because I know the heating will end up being set at between 23-25 - I don't have it any higher than 18 at home!

nokidshere · 24/01/2018 16:58

YANBU my DH and two teen boys complain about being cold all the time! The house is heated to 21 degrees, they are fully dressed with jeans, jumpers, t shirts and socks - how can they be cold? Thats a normal summer day in the UK and they would be outdoors in t-shirts and shorts.

I don't get it either

Julie8008 · 24/01/2018 16:59

British people like talking about the weather and like complaining. So its a great time of year for us to have a moan about the temperature whether we are cold or not. Give it 6 months and we will moan about it being to hot.

Bookaboo · 24/01/2018 17:02

I know!

In the future, I imagine conversations like this:

"Oh granny, you had central heating in the olden days but how come the gas was all used up?"

"Well, people didn't really care or give any thought, and rather than use energy wisely and resourcefully, they just cranked up the heating instead of dressing appropriately"

Well there is that julie, but they seem to think they are genuinely cold!

I have found my people! YADNBU! I'm generally a warmer individual than most so find the current trend for over-heating unbearable. PIL think 23 degrees is an acceptable temperature to maintain your house at! I grew up with 18 degrees as standard so needless to say I'm roasting in their excessively heated home.

Oliversmumsarmy · 24/01/2018 17:07

My house is heated to 27degrees and has been since 1st August last year.

If I am cold I don't work as I just end up sitting next to the radiator trying to keep warm

I cannot do another winter in this country.

ZoopDragon · 24/01/2018 17:08

I have the thermostat set to 21 at home. For work I wear wool dresses and wool jumpers, but sometimes it's so cold my hands stiffen up and I can't type properly.

Cornettoninja · 24/01/2018 17:09

I hear you op. People in my open plan over crowded office have started putting individual fan heaters under their desks. The air is so dry my nose bleeds when I blow it... just get a cardigan and hot water bottle!

GummyGoddess · 24/01/2018 17:09

People in my office are all warm, I'm totally freezing despite having two pairs of trousers on, thermal socks, maternity band, top, cardigan and shawl on. I'm not sure how many more layers I can put on!

I do not have the heating higher than 19 at home and also wear a lot of layers there but am still cold.

ZoopDragon · 24/01/2018 17:09

And I don't like wearing lots of bulky layers or big jumpers indoors- it feels restrictive.

QuiteLikely5 · 24/01/2018 17:10

I’ll complain when I’m too hot or too cold! Although I don’t expect the office temp to be altered for me!

Ilovecamping · 24/01/2018 17:11

Have the same issue at work, wear t shirts in winter at work. Also have summer weight duvet on bed all winter with no heat at night and window open a little. We have been camping where it hit -5 at night, that was cold wore gives and hats in bed.

ViceAdmiralAmilynHoldo · 24/01/2018 17:14

I've got a colleague I have a weekly meeting with in an airless office. I always sit near the window and open it.

She always sits near the window and complains she is cold, whilst wearing thin clothes. Well sod off to the other side of the room matey, so I don't cook.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 24/01/2018 17:14

I have found my people. My house is heated to 21c, comfortable heat, the office it's usually 24 plus and there are still moaners - put another jumper on. If you are already sitting in the office in shirt sleeves there's not much more to take off before reports are filed with HR.

HoppyHannah · 24/01/2018 17:17

And the same people will still be moaning in the Summer because it's too hot outside. FGS. Serial moaners.

Hell is other people in an office!

SemolinaSilkpaws · 24/01/2018 17:20

I have the heating set to 20c at home and that is plenty warm enough for me. When I started work as a teenager and said I was cold I would be told to go for a brisk walk at lunchtime to warm myself up. I did and it worked, I still do it.

Used to cycle to and from work and have a sloe gin to warm myself through when I got home in the winter but that’s another story.

Cherrycokewinning · 24/01/2018 17:22

Well at work I can’t put a jumper on because I have to dress professionally. Granted a jacket/ blazer would be warmer but I don’t always have one about my person. My office is freezing and I hate being cold

Pleasedontdrawonyoursister · 24/01/2018 17:23

I am this person Halo.

I do have a spare blanket in my drawer, and I also have a hot water bottle! My hands are always freezing though...

ShastaTrinity · 24/01/2018 17:24

YABU

It gets cold when you are sitting on a chair not moving all day. There are only so many layers you can wear and Uggs are frown upon in my office. I had a colleague complaining that the little heater at my feet was making him too hot!

I complain loudly in the summer too, when people feel entitled to request the air con to blast cold air. It's not unreasonable to expect to be warm in the office, I am not taking my duvet at work.

RatherBeRiding · 24/01/2018 17:24

My home is set to 19 degrees maximum. If I'm cold I'll put another layer on, but rarely am. Office is set to about 21 degrees. Any hotter and I'd have a headache and sore throat, and I moan about the cold all the time!!

But I am an outdoor person, and grew up on a farm with no central heating (ice inside bedroom windows) so 21 degrees is balmy!

Titsywoo · 24/01/2018 17:24

27 degrees! You must be roasting. If it gets to 21 in my house I am boiling and start stripping off. I don't like it being cold in my house when I get up or when I get out of the shower but when I'm dressed I keep it at about 17-18 degrees. I don't like getting quarterly bills of £800 so I try not to go overboard!

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 24/01/2018 17:25

It's about 9 degrees at my work in winter when I arrive and after 4 hours with an electric heater on I can get to the dizzy heights of 15 degrees.

I'm not one to complain as I like a colder house than most and sleep with the window open but 9 degrees is cold even when I wear vest, two layers of wool jumpers and tights and walking socks under trousers. Hot drinks do help.

Sometimes the customers notice when I'm giving them change and I just laugh it off and say something about doing some star jumps.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 24/01/2018 17:25

We're all soft nowadays though, myself included. I grew up in a house with no central heating, just one fire in the living room. In the depths of winter my mum would put a tine electric fire in the bathroom. I have clear memories of bathing in a little bath in front of the living room fire (and splashing water into it to hear it sizzle) so I guess I was 6 or 7.

But the grandma conversation is an interesting idea. "Grandma, tell me about how you travelled outside our village, how you went to other towns and even other countries, you know, before the fossil fuels ran out".

HoppyHannah · 24/01/2018 17:26

Ilovecamping

"Also have summer weight duvet on bed all winter with no heat at night and window open a little."

I am exactly the same, although I have an electric blanket too, so toasty without being laden down with high tog duvets!. I never have the heating on in the bedroom even in sub zero conditions.

Cool rooms = fewer colds and viruses, fact.
