To be sick of people complaining that they are freezing

When it's actually about 23' in the office. Just fed up of hearing it. I do wonder if it's because people heat their homes excessively and so most places end up feeling colder in comparison.

Also, outside. Temperatures have been mild yesterday and today compared to last week, when it genuinely was sub zero and people had grounds to complain. But people are still moaning that it's freezing when it's 10 degrees warmer!

Don't get it!

Aww man I just typed a reply responding to a few posts and it's all disappeared!!

My house is heated to 27degrees and has been since 1st August last year.

That is just ridiculous! How can you justify that?

I have no sympathy for anyone complaining about the cold, if they are one of the many people to follow the ridiculous fashion of having trousers 3 inches short so that ankles are visible. I would send them to the back of the queue for any treatment for colds and related illnesses on the grounds of it being self-inflicted.

Others I do have sympathy for, as in this country there are still too many homes and offices without a good level of insulation and draught proof windows. Moving from a 1960s to a recently built office for work has made a great difference- the people in the office who used to complain about cold, especially on Monday mornings, no longer do so.

If you are properly dressed for the weather conditions, but you're still cold, you might want to think about having your thyroid tested. I was so cold for years and years that I would cry when I had to go into the kitchen at home to get the dinner. I was so cold that it actually hurt. Thyroid treatment has changed my life. It might just change yours.

bananafish81 · 24/01/2018 19:46

time my thyroid has been tested multiple times and it's in perfect range. I have Raynaud's and have always felt the cold. Everyone bleating 'put a jumper on' doesn't help when you're already layered up like the Michelin man (and trying to look professional because you're senior management!)

nancy75 · 24/01/2018 19:47

My heating is at about 25 degrees, it’s in now and I’m still chilly ( wearing top, jumper, warm pj trousers socks & slippers) I would freeze if my house was 18 degrees. I can’t function in cold at all ( I do have thyroid & other problems)

FlashTheSloth · 24/01/2018 19:50

YABU. We don't like to feel the cold on purpose. I have to wear a uniform so can't put thick jumpers etc on, however I do wear a top under my uniform and my cardigan, I frequently wear a thick scarf and fingerless gloves at work. I cannot regulate my own temperature and get very cold, my hands go stiff and hurt when they are cold. It's hardly fun to be freezing.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 24/01/2018 19:52

I’m usually quite a warm beast, but I’ve been so unwell this winter that I’ve felt as though I’m freezing all the time. I’ve worn thicker clothes and bought a much bigger/more wintry coat and it’s only made a small difference. I’m doing a lot of walking around to keep myself warm.

WhiskeySourpuss · 24/01/2018 19:57

I'm always complaining that I'm freezing at work. I can't wear bulky clothes or too many layers as I feel as if I'm suffocating so tend to wear a skirt/jeans & a blouse/top with a relatively thin cardigan or a blazer any more than this & I'd be peeling layers off before the first hour was over.

It doesn't help that we have 3 doors in the office that all open out onto the warehouse which is the same temperature as outside (-8 at points over the past few weeks) which are open & closed constantly throughout the day.

I do have a hot water bottle, blanket & slippers in my desk drawer though & if the boys are back & forward too much I say "you're either in or you're out" in my Mum voice at which point they scuffle off to the kitchen out of my way.

ToothTrauma · 24/01/2018 19:58

My work is freezing. The thermostat says 23 degrees but it isn’t. It can’t be because I am usually too hot and if it was 23 degrees in my house or outside I’d be sweltering!

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 24/01/2018 19:58

I have the downstairs of the house at 20, upstairs at 17-18. Bedroom window often open at night, dropping to around 15. Can't stand stuffy bedrooms. For a sedentary job I would choose about 22 - any higher gives me headaches and a stuffy nose.

AlessandroVasectomi · 24/01/2018 19:59

Haven’t read this whole thread but wanted to offer a possible explanation about perception of temperature in the office . I’m one of those who constantly felt cold in a wonderfully air conditioned office. One engineer who came in to check the system was working explained that the air feels cooler because it is moving. In the same way that when you ride in an open top car on a hot summer’s day the air feels cool, so it does when the air con blows it past you in the office.

SuperBeagle · 24/01/2018 20:40

I live in a part of Australia which gets snow in winter, and our central heating is only ever set to 22 max.

We're on the opposite end of the spectrum at the moment. Consecutive days of 35+. I don't hear many people complaining about it. Most people I know put the air con on for 30 minutes at night before bed to cool the house down, and then just use fans electricity/gas is too expensive here for most people to run it 24/7

Bluelonerose · 24/01/2018 20:51

Growing up I don't think our house got to below 20 degrees my dm would leave the heating on in the day so the dog didn't get cold Confused

It's 17ish at night and 21ish in the day. The problem we've got is our house was built pre war so is very straight.
I tend to find I either need a vest top or full on arctic gear.

Bluelonerose · 24/01/2018 20:51

Drafty not straight Confused

zukiecat · 24/01/2018 21:00

I'm freezing!

I can't afford heating so my house is normally in sub zero temperatures, often colder inside the house than outside

I like going to work because it's so lovely and warm

LadyBunnysWig · 24/01/2018 21:03

I nearly started this very thread!

Or a very similar one anyways.

So at work the aircon blows out of three places. None of these places are directly above anyone and sort of evenly distributed. One girl in particular always complains that she is cold no matter what! I have a cardigan on the back of my chair so if I am a bit cold I'll put it on. She refuses to bring a cardigan in because 'she shouldn't have to'. Even when everyone else is perfectly fine with the temperature she will bitch and moan and be very passive aggressive all day until someone else just turns up the heating. She stops answering the phone because the receiver is too cold, she can't type properly because her fingers a frozen etc.
I nearly fainted the other day because of the heat but she was still bitching!
I swear she must have been brought up with the heating on all the time!

Sallystyle · 24/01/2018 21:06

I am always moaning about being cold.

I am always cold at work compared to other people. I am cold blooded, probably related to my thyroid problems.

Putting on another jumper does not help with feeling the cold on my face, hands and feet. I feel like shit a lot of the time in winter. At work I have to go inside and outside extremely regularly. It fucks with me.

Love the summer and never moan about being hot. I am truly miserable when I am cold.

Kaykee · 24/01/2018 21:06

House is generally cool, would rather layer up than have heating on as I get too warm and it’s uncomfy. Bedroom radiator is never on so always cold. I do feel the cold due to thyroid issues, can’t get warmed up if I get too cold but tend to ensure I’m wearing layers & have a blanket for when I’m sat in the livingroom.

Worst is in summer everyone else is roasting and I’m cold or cool, or on the flip side I get too hot and feel quite unwell. I don’t moan about it, I’ll mention I’m cold but I don’t expect special treatment. I also wouldn’t get myself in a knot if someone else is freezing or too hot. Just ignore and carry on,

BusySittingDown · 24/01/2018 21:14

I'm always cold. Never complain in the summer, there's no such thing as too hot.

Me too! I’m a real cold bod but I never complain (our offices are FREEZING) I just suffer silently and thank god that I’m only part time Grin. I wear lots of layers.

Actually, while we’re on the subject what completely fucks me off is people asking “are you not hot?” ALL THE FUCKING TIME!!! Angry

Are you not hot in that jacket? Are you not hot in that jumper?

Well clearly fucking not or I would have taken it off, WOULDN’T I?! Angry

coffeecoffeemorecoffee · 24/01/2018 21:15

I set mine to 25. But then it switches itself off when the house reaches that temperature and then I’m nice and toasty for a few hours. If I’m home all day I normally have to click it back on once or twice throughout the day

mrwalkensir · 24/01/2018 21:22

our office has hot and cold patches due to where the aircon vents are, so even if some are happy in a sleeveless frock, others this time of year have a scarf or two on and jumper. Where they position the thermometer says it's warm.

Asthenia · 24/01/2018 21:47

There’s a woman that wanders around my (very well heated) office in just a thin shirt, opaque tights and a skirt complaining how cold it is and can she turn up the heating. Put a fucking jumper on!!!

Valerrie · 24/01/2018 21:52

Your house is set to twenty SEVEN degrees?! That's ridiculous.

This year I'm enjoying having my house at about 20 on really cold days. It's the first year we've had a working boiler in five years. We managed.

When you wake up in the morning, there's frost on the inside of your windows and the water in your loo is frozen, that's cold.

UterusUterusGhali · 24/01/2018 21:56

I work in an overly hot place and a good many of my colleagues are menopausal. We probably have the opposite problem. We fight over the fans even in winter. Grin

whirlygirly · 24/01/2018 22:02

I'd bloody love to live somewhere where we had to air condition the house before bed. I'm made for a warmer climate I think.

Where I live now isn't so much cold as just relentlessly damp. There's always argy bargy in the office over temperature but I tend to layer up in preparation to adjust as necessary.
