Inspiration needed everyone, I have lived overseas for 8 years. Parents are coming to visit again in a few weeks and normally I have a huge list of things for them to bring ..... but this year, maybe it's the years away from home I am losing a bit of nostalgia for UK centric goodies. So far I have Liz Earl cleanser, soap and glory body wash (can get it here but it's expensive), cheese and onion/ prawn cocktail walkers, robinsons juice and diet Irn bru. If you lived abroad what would you crave/miss/couldn't live without ???

Very Lazy garlic, chilli and ginger

Hortonlovesahoo · 29/01/2018 05:42

Tea bags, crunches, Cadbury buttons, proper cheddar, sandwich spread that doesn’t have milk in it. I used to have loads of things but you get used to it after a while.

I used to love trashy magazines and newspapers but rarely touch them now

NurseButtercup · 29/01/2018 05:57

I know two people that have family who have relocated to USA and they miss fish and chips. So every year they take fish and chips to their relatives. How? Freeze a portion of local chip shop fish and chips wrap in lots of newspaper and lots plastic bags in their suitcase. It doesn't defrost because it's cold in the hold area of the plane. Absolute madness Hmm

TossDaily · 29/01/2018 08:15

Cadbury's Chocolate Fingers
Jamie Dodgers
Bourbon biscuits
Custard creams

gussyfinknottle · 29/01/2018 09:01

Take food stuffs into the US at your own risk. It can get pulled by customs as can you if you try it

chickenowner · 29/01/2018 09:05

I lived overseas for 8 years...

Proper teabags (not the yellow Lipton ones)
Cheddar cheese
Marmalade
Chocolate digestives
Nivea soft face cream - without skin whiteners like all the Asian ones!
M&S underwear
British newspaper

One of my friends always asked for Monster Munch and jammy dodgers. Grin

It is all the things you can’t buy that I would miss.
The comfort of medical care and my gp, great TV, rolling green hills and hedges, the English birds and hedgehogs, amazing supermarkets full of variety, music, history, great clothes shopping and all the traditions.
In the end you can order anything on line but you can’t replace the essence of home.

user1474652148 · 29/01/2018 09:12

I lived overseas for seven years and the occasional homesickness was brutal.

phoenix1973 · 29/01/2018 09:13

Marmite.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 29/01/2018 09:41

Someone needs to wash their mouth out!

the Marmite is identical (as long as you realise it's called OurMate)

...it is SO not.

You’ve shown yourself up for the non marmite eater you are. Shame on you.

Nakedavenger74 · 29/01/2018 09:51

@AnnieAnoniMouse actually that's right. The tiny jars of OurMate for $4 in NZ are proper Marmite. Sanitarium laid claim to the brand Marmite in NZ before the proper UK stuff started being imported.

NZ Marmite (the Sanitarium stuff) is utterly grim. Sugar is the second ingredient 🤢

Nakedavenger74 · 29/01/2018 09:54

From Wikipedia

As Unilever has the exclusive right to the Marmite name in the United Kingdom, and Sanitarium has the exclusive right to the name in Australia and New Zealand, their respective versions of Marmite must be sold under a different name in the other countries. Unilever International sells the British Marmite as Our Mate in Australia and New Zealand, while Sanitarium sells the New Zealand Marmite as "NZ-Mite" in the UK.

NetballHoop · 29/01/2018 10:07

The one thing I miss when abroad is fresh milk. Most milk in other countries is just horrible UHT muck.

bummymummythefirst · 29/01/2018 12:16

We get way better fish and chips in New England than in the UK.

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 29/01/2018 12:22

Bummy...South Australia too! Amazing fish and chips

Shit chocolate though and the cake needs work.

IJoinedJustToPostThis · 29/01/2018 12:28

Salt and vinegar square crisps
Decent tea
Border Biscuits dark chocolate gingers

bummymummythefirst · 29/01/2018 12:40

We have two places locally that make chocolate and they are amazing! I'm always depressed about the food when I go home! Apart from curry. I've yet to have a good curry in the States. I make them myself now!

UgandanKnuckles · 29/01/2018 12:41

Never mind abroad, I get upset when I visit family in London and can't get chips and gravy.

tiredpom · 30/01/2018 07:51

I would do anything for a proper fish supper !!!!

Well, this isn't true, as I'm in Australia and have a jar of Marmite sitting in my cupboard at the moment.

The jar is different, but the name and product are the same.

tiredpom · 30/01/2018 07:59

We buy marmite from the uk bit in Coles - same package, name etc.

OP posts:
gussyfinknottle · 30/01/2018 08:06

Am I weird to hate marmite but like vegemite?

SuperBeagle · 30/01/2018 08:09

Am I weird to hate marmite but like vegemite?

Certain fruit - apples (not if in Europe)
Full cream milk and other dairy products
Sweets - refreshers, wine gums, pontefract cakes and chocolate
Marmite
M and S basic knickers, tights, socks (cheaper)
Cider - especially good quality "artisan" brands
