What can you not live without that you can only find in the UK !

Inspiration needed everyone, I have lived overseas for 8 years. Parents are coming to visit again in a few weeks and normally I have a huge list of things for them to bring ..... but this year, maybe it's the years away from home I am losing a bit of nostalgia for UK centric goodies. So far I have Liz Earl cleanser, soap and glory body wash (can get it here but it's expensive), cheese and onion/ prawn cocktail walkers, robinsons juice and diet Irn bru. If you lived abroad what would you crave/miss/couldn't live without ???

Walker's crisps are Lays in the US/Canada, and Smiths in Australia/NZ.

You can get Walkers Cheese and Onion in Australia. It's literally Smiths Cheese and Onion. Confused

Also Light n' Tangy is a food dupe for Prawn Cocktail.

The only thing I found in the UK which I wish we had in Australia was Quaker's instant porridge pots. Specifically, the golden syrup ones. That'd be a godsend for winter mornings.

95% of the other things on this thread can be found here.

MouseholeCat · 25/01/2018 03:35

The last things I bought before I got on the plane to the US were a Pret baguette, Nik Naks, Skips, and Pickled Onion Monster Munch.

I have a huge craving for Weetabix, but apparently, stores are starting to carry them here. Also missing crumpets, so if anyone knows a store that sells them... I'm a poor baker, but may have to learn.

mathanxiety · 25/01/2018 03:40

YYY to pudding rice.

If you're in the US and you like it, Cadbury's Turkish bar.

Fionne · 25/01/2018 03:40

non bio washing powder (shock),

cooking chocolate

I think we're in the same region and Ive seen these things where I am in in C4 and the supermarket chain that sells Waitrose products.

Fionne · 25/01/2018 03:43

Walker's crisps are Lays in the US/Canada, and Smiths in Australia/NZ.

The seem to be made to different recipes because its easy to identify which is which if you do a test test.

Fionne · 25/01/2018 03:56

Every time Im in the Uk, which is often, about every 4 months. I bring back a delivery of white puddings, haggis and Scotch Pies. I have them delivered to the house the day Im leaving then just before I leave the house I put fresh icepacks in the insulated delivery box before putting it in its own suitcase. It then goes in the hold as checked in baggage and when I get home, thousands of miles from the UK, the ice packs are still quite frozen.

Its all I still miss but probably because there's really nothing I can't get here. But I am getting my brother to bring me some Pearl sugar in a few weeks so I can see if it really does make a difference to Waffles.

captainjackandjill · 25/01/2018 04:02

Would love real Devonshire Cream ( although can no longer eat it ), proper Bangers and Mash ( prob can't eat it either ), and like a PP lots and lots of books!

SandLand · 25/01/2018 04:44

Fionne possibly the same region, but i suspect I'm the other side of the border . No Waitrose stockists here that I know of. I can get cooking chocolate, but its revolting! Non bio I've seen about once a year. Bringing a stash over, and mixing it up with soap nuts it safer!

Wrongornot · 25/01/2018 04:51

Is it okay to take cheese in your suitcase? Visiting friends in Bulgaria next week and they have asked for extra mature cheddar and the Saturday telegraph!

Rainbunny · 25/01/2018 05:36

Having lived outside the UK for a longtime now there are few things that I can't get but there are a couple of things that are very expensive to get to the point where it's really not worth the price to order them:

  • Prawn Cocktail Walkers
  • Tartex pate spread (a bit niche but I loved that stuff!)
  • Curly Wurly bars
  • Batchelors cup-soup mixes particularly broccoli/cauliflower flavour. Crappy food but I crave them now I can't ever get them.
  • Batchelors Super Noodles - BBQ Beef particularly. Again, absolute crap but I crave them once a decade or so...
BikeRunSki · 25/01/2018 05:41

I'm not sure what isn't available abroad... but I’d hazard a guess on Twinings or Yorkshire tea and Marmite.

This is what my overseas sister always wants. Also M&S knickers and a particular lipstick.

sunbird17 · 25/01/2018 05:44

The Body Shop body butter
M&S knickers
Vanilla extract
Olive oil (can get it but it's very expensive)
No.7 face cream

HappenedForAReisling · 25/01/2018 05:46

Instant gravy granules.

Sorry if it's been mentioned before bit I CBA to RTFT.

Johnnycomelately1 · 25/01/2018 05:57

Lakeland heated clothes drying racks

Always see expats dragging them into outsize luggage at HTR on the way back to Asia. When you live in an apartment in a high humidity country they are a life changer.

Clearoutre · 25/01/2018 06:18

Percy pigs! 🐷 🐽 🐷

goose1964 · 25/01/2018 06:55

Our friend in the Czech republic asked us to bring her liver salts

tiddlyipom · 25/01/2018 07:09

I've lived abroad for years, the only thjngs I rellly miss are a proper fish supper with salt n'sauce, ruffle bars and clotted cream, prper sausage rolls m ad e with pork, not beef.

Oh, and Tesco jam filled doughnuts. And prooer bakers, where you don't pay $4 for a dense lump of cake.Australian bakeries are generally crap.

WhatCanBrownBearSee · 25/01/2018 07:19

I could spend many an hour drooling over the online supermarket British Corner Shop.com
I've not used it yet but my friends out here (USA) rave about it. One day I'll miss something so much it's worth paying £20 in postage. So far kind friends have been posting me Twinings on a regular basis, and we are just about managing to keep the kids supplied in chocolate buttons.

DarthNigel · 25/01/2018 07:39

Bovril

Todamhottoday · 25/01/2018 07:42

Suppose it also depends where you are, a first world country where you can a lot of items, or like me in the back of beyond with limited choice, but plenty rice and spices!

Even brought back Fairy washing up liquid, yes, bloody Fairy, the local stuff rips my hands to pieces, red and sore, but did mange to get a bottle off Amazon (thank you for Amazon) but it cost almost a fiver for a small bottle.......did not care

morningconstitutional2017 · 25/01/2018 09:26

As a lot of countries don't drink tea as we Brits do I'd very much miss Tetleys tea bags and fresh milk - and I gather also that kettles never really caught on in coffee drinking countries.

To flip this on its head, when DH and I went to France we used to bring back tins of a pudding called 'Mont Blanc' which is a bit like blancmange - our favourites were vanilla and pistachio. I've never seen anything quite like it in the UK.

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 25/01/2018 09:34

MIL lives in asia. We take toothbrush heads, Pantenne (it's advertised out there as 'posh'), pain killers, dulcolax (?), instant coffee, cream sherry and glittery costume jewellery (argos blinged up watches) so she can give as gifts.
I also scout the boot sales for kid's tops that have English writing on and my 2 wear them on holiday and then I leave whole suitcases full over there. We also took an English speaking teddy one time.

MapofTassie · 25/01/2018 09:37

As an ex-brit living in country Tasmania I was pleased to find that my nearest Coles has a small British section. Full fat Irn Bru, Jaffa cakes, twiglets, marmite etc. Hellmann’s mayo is available in both Coles and Woolies.

cambodianfoxhound · 25/01/2018 09:39

Nurofen Plus! You can't buy it where I am. Although they might feel a bit uncomfortable buying medicines... Gradual tan moisturiser (such as Dove etc.) Sanctuary face wash. Cadbury's chocolate (overseas Cadbury is not as good). Amazon Fire Stick - has been brilliant to watch BBC iplayer/Channel 4 etc..
