What can you not live without that you can only find in the UK !

Inspiration needed everyone, I have lived overseas for 8 years. Parents are coming to visit again in a few weeks and normally I have a huge list of things for them to bring ..... but this year, maybe it's the years away from home I am losing a bit of nostalgia for UK centric goodies. So far I have Liz Earl cleanser, soap and glory body wash (can get it here but it's expensive), cheese and onion/ prawn cocktail walkers, robinsons juice and diet Irn bru. If you lived abroad what would you crave/miss/couldn't live without ???

Tired, we had chocolate taken from us once at Australian customs.

tiredpom · 26/01/2018 22:11

@Fionne as long as you declare it, it's in its original package it's never an issue. Think the rules have relaxed slightly !

chocolateworshipper · 26/01/2018 22:11

For me it would be Marmite.

A friend who lives in the Canary Islands always asks us to bring sausage rolls and cheddar cheese (we put it all in a cool bag with ice packs and it's fine by the time we get there)

tiredpom · 26/01/2018 22:13

@chocolateworshipper oh my god .... m&s sausage rolls - if only !

auserinamillion · 26/01/2018 22:15

Pate, good cheese, proper bacon and sausages, but mainly good pate :)

chocolateworshipper · 26/01/2018 22:27

DH has just reminded me that we also take English mustard

Femunculus · 26/01/2018 22:34

Shortbread, black pudding, lapsang souchong tea, M&S undies, ginger snaps, bakewell tarts, mature cheddar, oatcakes, good cider, English kids' books, cold and flu remedies, Christmas crackers, pasties, Crunchie chocolate bars and tons of stuff from Boots!

Rainbunny · 27/01/2018 01:20

McSmoke - all cheese in the USA is vile? Where the heck are you shopping? I consider myself a bit of a cheese snob and I've had amazing cheese here? Have you tried some specialty cheese shops? Hell even Trader Joe's stocks some delicious cheeses, including my weekly hunk of stilton!

MiddleClassProblem · 27/01/2018 01:32

You forgot the Pimms!

Jozxyqk · 27/01/2018 01:36

Bovril
Lea & Perrins

I make my own marzipan these days. 'Tis lush.

19lottie82 · 27/01/2018 01:37

Is Hello really considered a trashy magazine?! Shock

19lottie82 · 27/01/2018 01:38

My DDad lives in the USA and he really misses back bacon, which you struggle to get in a lot of places. Streaky just doesn’t hit the spot!

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 27/01/2018 01:51

Lottie are you serious? Grin

bummypicklemummy · 27/01/2018 02:08

I've never seen back bacon in the States. I think Canadian bacon may be back bacon.

mathanxiety · 27/01/2018 03:35

You can find it in some Irish shops. Also boiling bacon.

mathanxiety · 27/01/2018 03:47

Bar Keeper's Friend is available in lots of places in the US in the cleaning aisle.

Ginger snaps are everywhere. I buy Dutch Maid brand in my local dollar store. Very snappy and gingery and I like the price.

Sunnysideup - sadly English or Irish bangers are not a thing in the US, but other US sausage offerings more than make up for that imo. We eat a lot of Italian and Polish sausage, and love Mexican chorizo with scrambled eggs.

Todamhottoday · 27/01/2018 04:09

Well a feast last night of salami with fennel, Spanish chorizo, cured ham and stilton and crunchy cheddar, sadly without any wine. A rare treat only when I return from the UK.

But sent pic of my platter to other ex-pats here, oh they were envious!

Your all talking of bacon not being any good, wish I had the problem the only thing that resembles bacon in any form is a pack I can sometimes get from Sri Lanka at an eyewatering cost.

tiredpom · 27/01/2018 04:34

@MiddleClassProblem don't worry we can get pimms ! The joys of being in the commonwealth - what is everyone buying from boots and what is bartenders friend ? X

Todamhottoday · 27/01/2018 04:43

Barkeepers friend is a powder which is a cleaner and stain remover. Great for stubborn stains on sinks etc.

MiddleClassProblem · 27/01/2018 07:12

Thank fuck for that 😂

OssomMummy1 · 27/01/2018 07:28

Fish and chips from Whitby?! Grin

OssomMummy1 · 27/01/2018 07:29

Fishermans friend Blush

Nakedavenger74 · 29/01/2018 04:30

My parents are currently en route from the UK to Auckland. They have the following for us:
2 kilos of Marmite
A hundredweight of Boots' Cucumber Essentials Range skincare (facial wipes, moisturiser, facial wash) amazing stuff at £1 an item and on 3 for 2! We don't have decent cheap skincare here
M&S knickers for me and DP (knockers for me and hipster briefs for DP) again pants are crazy pricy and nasty here
M&S tights
DPs favourite deodorant and Dove Men shower gel
Yorkshire tea (available but 2x price)
Specialist sports drinks

I'd also be requesting jamon and salami and massive wheels of French Brie and Camembert but bloody quarantine innit.
