What can you not live without that you can only find in the UK !

Inspiration needed everyone, I have lived overseas for 8 years. Parents are coming to visit again in a few weeks and normally I have a huge list of things for them to bring ..... but this year, maybe it's the years away from home I am losing a bit of nostalgia for UK centric goodies. So far I have Liz Earl cleanser, soap and glory body wash (can get it here but it's expensive), cheese and onion/ prawn cocktail walkers, robinsons juice and diet Irn bru. If you lived abroad what would you crave/miss/couldn't live without ???

Be warned most robinson’s (And all other brands) are sugar free and full of sweeteners instead. If it wasn’t like that when you last had it, you might need to get them to check bottles as it won’t taste at all the same

girlwithadragontattoo · 24/01/2018 10:03

Galaxy chocolate (we do have cadburys), bisto gravy, St ives face scrub. I miss boots the shop as well

RainyAfternoon · 24/01/2018 10:04

Just remembered two more
Wine Gums
Knorr flavour pots of chicken gravy

Beachcomber · 24/01/2018 10:07

Potato scones
Bacon
Rolls
And all 3 together

MissEliza · 24/01/2018 10:08

Beachcomber I think we'd get along very well.

Many varieties of walkers, bourbon biscuits, decent tea, marmite. These are things friends have requested.

tiredpom · 24/01/2018 10:14

@Beachcomber I have learned to make potato scones thankfully !
@gowernotthegower I've had the little squirts Robinsons and thought it was ok tbh. And yes I now miss all the crisps !!

when I lived in Central Asia, I did get Mum ot bring some indian spices, the list of what I could buy locally was pretty limited (and expensive)

elQuintoConyo · 24/01/2018 10:16

I've been abroad 19 years and the only things i miss are around Christmas time.

I always get a visitor to bring a magazine for the 6yo because they have more gifts on the front (Thomas the Tank Engine usually has 3-4 gifts plus stickers, Spanish mags have 1 gift).

I sometimes ask for marzipan, Curly Wirly, flavoured hot chocolate sachets.

SandLand · 24/01/2018 10:18

Typical packing here: tea, bovril, Easter stuff, shampoo, moisturiser for the kids, non bio washing powder (Shock), glace cherries, a years supply of clothes for me, fancy dress costumes for world book day, superhero day, anything else that might come up, cooking chocolate, kids books, UK curriculum work books, sun hats.

MrsE · 24/01/2018 10:18

Yorkshire Decaff Tea
Marmite
Caramac - i can't eat chocolate so this is my substitute and you never find it anywhere
Bisto gravy granules

Beachcomber · 24/01/2018 10:19

Thought you might be a potato scone type what with the diet Irn Bru!
We sometimes make them but I find it a right faff.

Tea. I know it's easy to buy tea in other countries, but for some reason (whether it's 'builders' or lovely loose-leaf tea) it never tastes quite the same.

TornadoOfToys · 24/01/2018 10:20

Decaf tea bags
Branston pickle
Brown sugar
SR flour
Bacon
Sauces (mint, Curry)
Easter eggs (and kids Easter egg sets with eggcup etc in)
Crackers and mince pies
Cold & cough remedies, lemsip, strepsils etc

Dustysparrow · 24/01/2018 10:23

Pubs! And I mean proper pubs, not that 'authentic irish bar' crap you get along the strip in Tenerife etc. I mean a cosy pub with a roaring fire and good pub grub to boot. You can't get that anywhere but the British Isles.

NotReadyToMove · 24/01/2018 10:25

Tbh i think that the longer you have lived abroad, the less you are missing ‘things from home’...

elQuintoConyo · 24/01/2018 10:25

Dusty our local "Irish" pub is called Highlands GrinGrinGrin

JaneEyre70 · 24/01/2018 10:27

Worcestershire Sauce and Waitrose essential teabags, couldn't live without those.

Dustysparrow · 24/01/2018 10:29

And days at out with the National Trust - by the time Spring arrives I NEED to go for a day out somewhere pretty, sniff the flowers, go 'oohh' at the impressive stately home and enjoy an overpriced magnum in the chilly British sunshine while the kids do some kind activity trail as we go along. I need these moments to look forward to or I climb the walls. I know the NT has a few places abroad as well but it's not the same. I luffs it - we use our membership to death every year, it's such good value, I would miss it loads if we moved abroad.

MNOverinvestor · 24/01/2018 10:32

Oatcakes, actually all sorts of biscuits for cheese including Millers Toast ones (the ones with dried fruit and nuts), weird crisps from M&S... The diet Irn Bru suggests Scottishness so a tin of haggis? Proper shortbread?

Fink · 24/01/2018 10:37

There's loads of stuff you can get abroad but is just ridiculously expensive compared to the UK so it's easier to get a box load brought over when you can.

Mostly, I missed stuff which couldn't be brought on a plane, so not massively useful for you. British style saugages, mature cheddar cheese etc.

Of things that can be transported, British chocolates and biscuits would be top of my list but if you haven't got a sweet tooth maybe not so much for you. Hot chocolate powder (they obviously sell it in France, I just never found one that tasted like Options).

LinoleumBlownapart · 24/01/2018 10:39

I miss going for a picnic in the day time in summer, instead of just sunset picnics.
Marmite and books in English are all I ask for, everything else can either be made or replaced.

PenguinsandPandas · 24/01/2018 10:43

M&S lemon drizzle cake, elderflower squash, cheese with onion in, pickled red cabbage, crackers, pickled onions, baked beans

Yokohamajojo · 24/01/2018 10:48

Twiglets!!
