What can you not live without that you can only find in the UK !

Inspiration needed everyone, I have lived overseas for 8 years. Parents are coming to visit again in a few weeks and normally I have a huge list of things for them to bring ..... but this year, maybe it's the years away from home I am losing a bit of nostalgia for UK centric goodies. So far I have Liz Earl cleanser, soap and glory body wash (can get it here but it's expensive), cheese and onion/ prawn cocktail walkers, robinsons juice and diet Irn bru. If you lived abroad what would you crave/miss/couldn't live without ???

Oh and Pimms but not really the season for it

Kalinka16 · 24/01/2018 10:54

I live abroad and my one staple is Yorkshire Tea. Also sausages, bacon, crumpets, Cheddar cheese, nice soaps (yes, we got 6 bottles of soap in the car when we last went “home”), kids shampoo.... DH goes for Monster Munch and Scampi crisps.

whooptifeckindo · 24/01/2018 10:56

They have British stores or British aisles (no pun intended) in US supermarkets. I found Tayto crisps in one once. Joy unconfined.
I once had a conversation with a woman who ran a British store who told me she'd love to make shepherd's pie but sadly you need a special oven. I kept my face straight until I left the building and then pissed myself laughing. As did my US cousin who visited us regularly and knew bullshit when she heard it.

tiredpom · 24/01/2018 10:57

@Fink ! Thank you options hot choc ..... do they still do a mint one ? We used to get Cadbury one but they have discontinued it ! My SS will love it if I can get some !!!!

Salad cream, beef roasting joints, monster munch.

(Switzerland)

I would not have survived if I couldn't get Marmite though Smile

LustyBusty · 24/01/2018 11:08

Oooh, @tiredpom homemade pork pie? Genuinely, why did that never occur to me!!? I've just been bemoaning my pork pie less existence and I could have made my own!! Off to Google....

Bisto instant gravy, Dairylea cheese spread and normal baked beans (why would you add Maple syrup to baked beans fgsShock) were what I missed while living abroad.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 24/01/2018 11:19

My sister wanted curly wurlys and squash when she lived in America.

TwoBlueFish · 24/01/2018 11:19

When I lived abroad it was chocolate, marmite, pickled onion monster munch and tea.

My dad lives in another European country and stocks up on marmite, salad cream, paracetamol, indigestion tablets and birthday cards.

Todamhottoday · 24/01/2018 11:19

Just brought a load of stuff back,
Bisto,
Stock pots (meat),
seed crackers,
Galaxy,
dish cloths
Zoflora,
2 small Christmas cakes,
dark chocolate,
cheese,
cooked meat/salami,
tins fish,
cake making stuff,
yeast, flour,
Colmans mustard,
horseradish
Decent pans,
Foot/hand cream
Milton tabs

A couple of above I can get but they are very expensive and usually out of date, bit of a random collection but well needed!

fruitbrewhaha · 24/01/2018 11:21

Ah National Trust, when ever we go away we always lament at how crap the historical attractions are. No kids trails, no informations!

Pickled onions
Cheddar
Bacon
Sliced bread that you can toast and isn't American bread and made with loads of sugar.
Packs of indian/asian spices.
Naan bread - doesn't travel though
Instant coffee ?

Todamhottoday · 24/01/2018 11:21

Oh and the poster who says the latest Times from a sunday, I kicked myself when I forgot to do that this time.

LadyFlangeWidget · 24/01/2018 11:25

Heinz baked beans, Cheddar, Red Leicester, lots of Boots 3 for 2 stuff, sausages, bacon oh and cheap supermarket painkillers like aspirin, paracetomol , 35pence in Asda, ( 6 + euros for the same thing in Italy),,,,,

tiredpom · 24/01/2018 11:25

I will be spending tomorrow on the sainsbury's website !!
So many good ideas ......

OP posts:
FurryDogMother · 24/01/2018 11:25

Not me, but my DH always asks for polony from Asda :)

Nakedavenger74 · 24/01/2018 11:27

Boots stuff.

Other than that we can get pretty much everything here (NZ) but at a price so friends bring a fuckton of Marmite and Boots Cucumber Moisturiser on their visits.

There's a shop in Auckland that sells Scampi Fries. Always hated Scampi Fries but now I feel like they're some kind of home based delicacy and I purchase them at $4 a bag like a fucking nutcase.

bummypicklemummy · 24/01/2018 11:30

Amazon sells big boxes of scampi fries. Grin

tiredpom · 24/01/2018 11:31

@Nakedavenger74 that comment made me laugh out loud as I was the person this year with twiglets ! Lol

thisisminnie · 24/01/2018 11:31

Jelly in cubes
Calpol
Sudofed

Everything else we can get here now (sometimes in the “ethnic food” section of the supermarket which makes me laugh).

I do miss cheddar cheese but wait until I go back to UK for that as a treat on jacket potato with salted butter......mmmmmm

Todamhottoday · 24/01/2018 11:34

Can I add a couple more things just remembered what was in the case that I cannot get (well unless cheap as and prob give us aluminium poisoning)

Good quality roasting racks/trays
HP sauce
Club buiscuts
Cesar dressing (from Aldi in plastic bottles, weigh less)
Paxo
Birthday cards, roll of paper
Hola Hoops

Im a good packer!

Nakedavenger74 · 24/01/2018 11:39

@tiredpom ludicrous isn't it. I've also discovered the bacon fry. Like Frazzles but even more crack MSG

Yecartmannew · 24/01/2018 11:41

i can easily live without snack type things, chocolate etc. I can usually find an acceptable local tea (especially as we don't mind it weak). I am not bothered about cosmetics/shampoo etc. I am happy to adapt fully to the local diet or adapt "British" recipes to local ingredients.

But I hate hate hate the butter in most of the world. I long for some rich yellow creamy butter instead of the almost white, whipped, tasteless stuff available in most countries. I know its because the cows need to eat the rich grass we have here/Ireland/northern France/New Zealand but even so I still crave it.

MrsMarigold · 24/01/2018 11:43

Percy Pigs
Marmite
Clotted Cream
Elderflower cordial

According to my old nanny from the Netherlands.
