To ask if Denby chips ?

Midnightpony · 23/01/2018 19:17

We currently have IKEA plates, bowls etc.
Perfectly adequate, reasonable price. Couldn't afford to pay more at the time. But they've accumulated chips over the last 3 years.
Should I invest in a set of Denby (or similar) or will that chip too , in which case I might as well save the £££ and buy IKEA ?

Had mine ten years and no chips or breakages as yet..

PurpleDaisies · 23/01/2018 19:18

I’m surprised, my Ikea plates are almost indestructible.

Denby doesn’t chip either.

tabbywabby · 23/01/2018 19:18

I've got a 12 year old Denby that has not chipped at all.

twinjocks · 23/01/2018 19:18

Yes, Denby does chip - in my experience, not as easily or quickly as the IKEA stuff, but it does.

tabbywabby · 23/01/2018 19:19

Should be Denby set up there ^ including cookware that goes in the oven.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 23/01/2018 19:19

Not particularly easily; but yes, it does. And all of mine is old, I can't imagine the newer stuff is any better quality?

Fekko · 23/01/2018 19:19

Errrr - but I’m really clumsy! I think the chunky styles don’t so much but we have the plain white and it seems to be more ‘delicate’z

EllieFredrickson · 23/01/2018 19:19

Ours is 20 years old (wedding presents) and collected when first married. Used everyday and whilst 1 or 2 plates and bowls are chipped it's in good nick. Couldn't comment on the modern stuff though.

ShatnersBassoon · 23/01/2018 19:20

Only a couple of bits of ours have chipped, but that's in 20 years of every single day use, being put in the dishwasher every day and being used by young children for years. It's very robust crockery.

naichick · 23/01/2018 19:20

Ive got denby and it has got chips! But to be fair we are pretty clumsy and the kids are little so I thinks its done well. We’ve had it about 8 years!

BeyondThePage · 23/01/2018 19:20

Had ours 22 years - one plate broke, one mug and one large plate chipped (out of a full dinner service for 8) -

BUT... we have always used a dishwasher.

my friend has a similar set to us and hers end up chipped all the time since she has a Belfast sink and a long tap over it and is bloody careless

CMOTDibbler · 23/01/2018 19:20

I got a lot of mine as wedding presents - and we've been married 20 years! It takes an awful lot to chip it, and we use ours everyday.
We get replacements from the outlet shops and they end up a very reasonable price

PiecesOfHate · 23/01/2018 19:21

I've got through a LOT of Denby (large family and tiled kitchen and dining room floors!), lots of my remaining stuff is chipped.
It seems to have gone down in quality over the years... I have some Denby mugs from the early 60's that are still going strong, but my more recent mugs have all broken.

Fekko · 23/01/2018 19:21

I have granite worktops and they are really hard (so if a plate catches the edge it just chips away)

PiecesOfHate · 23/01/2018 19:23

Where is this outlet shop of which you speak, CMOT? Smile

ProfYaffle · 23/01/2018 19:25

My Denby mugs chipped if you looked at them sideways. Have recently got rid and replaced with cheap (as chips) mugs from the original factory shop.

Pfftkids · 23/01/2018 19:25

The youngest dropped 5 denby plates at once and they smashed, had them for years with not a chip out them. Now we eat off white enamel metal plates 😂 the denby plates are kept for adult dinners only

Silvercatowner · 23/01/2018 19:26

You have to work quite hard to chip Denby stuff but if you drop it onto a tiled floor then it will chip. A lot.

Schroedingerscatagain · 23/01/2018 19:26

I bought my first Denby 28 years ago, it’s used every day and I think in all that time clutsy dh has chipped one mug and dropped a plate other than that it looks as good as the day I bought it

We even have some inherited Denby (local) which is even older still as good as new

etap · 23/01/2018 19:28

mmmmm denby chips ♥

Schroedingerscatagain · 23/01/2018 19:28

For those asking about outlet shops, most MacArthur glens have them and there is also a seconds shop in Denby itself

SockUnicorn · 23/01/2018 19:29

My grandma has a brown floral denby set shes had for 30+ years with minimal chips. My mum has had multiple Denby over the years, most have chipped.

I have a next set that I find quite robust (even with 2 DDs that noisily launch it around) and not a chip.

AgnesSkinner · 23/01/2018 19:29

Yes, Denby will chip. It is stoneware, so more durable than earthenware but not as strong as porcelain or bone china.

TheKnackeredChef · 23/01/2018 19:30

My mum has had Denby for years. She dropped a mug once and it broke the floor tile. The mug was good as new.

BarbarianMum · 23/01/2018 19:31

Ive got one chipped side plate. And mine's about 14 years old.
