To ask if Denby chips ?

We currently have IKEA plates, bowls etc.
Perfectly adequate, reasonable price. Couldn't afford to pay more at the time. But they've accumulated chips over the last 3 years.
Should I invest in a set of Denby (or similar) or will that chip too , in which case I might as well save the £££ and buy IKEA ?

Our set is ten years old and nothing has chipped in spite of being walloped into the granite worktop regularly in moving from dishwasher to cupboard. I’ve dropped it a fair bit on our wooden floor and no fatalities there. In fact the only piece I broke was when I dropped a bowl onto a plate in the dishwasher, so I decided that the only thing hard enough to break Denby is Denby.

Piffyonarockbun · 23/01/2018 19:34

I have some denby. The youngest it could be is 33 Smile. It doesnt seem to chip but ive managed to break quite a lot dropping it on the tiled floor. I got it all as a job lot on ebay a few years ago really cheap. I had no idea what i had. It was only when i broke the first plate and went to replace it that i realised Sad.
When i collected it the lady asked me what i was going to do with it. I was very confused and told her i was going to use it! She seemed relieved. I realise now she was probably worried i was a dealer and going to make a huge profit on it all!!

Our chunky white Denby has chipped but we usually buy second which may be the cause and use it everyday but there is a co start theme of chilled crockery. Cookware seems much better and have had 22 years!

EggsonHeads · 23/01/2018 19:36

Yes from my experience (all stuff bought in the last five years) but very little in comparison to most crockery. Some of the stuff is really pretty too. If you wait for the right time you can usually find it half price.

Redpriestandmozart · 23/01/2018 19:37

I don't know about their normal range but we bought two sets of Denby that Tesco had on sale in Jan about four years ago. Maybe it was a cheaper range sold only in sales but it chipped so bad by Easter most plates had chips or scores and all but one cereal bowl was chipped. I wrote to Denby and they replaced them and strangely the replacements have not chipped!

Emilizz34 · 23/01/2018 19:37

No, it’s very hard wearing . I have a 20 year old set that was used daily for years and still gets dragged out when we’re having a big crowd . It looks perfect.

Flicketyflack · 23/01/2018 19:38

Have a Denby set since my marriage in 2000, still going strong! Apart from a couple I 'threw' on the floor in a rage Angry

PickAChew · 23/01/2018 19:39

Had mine since the 90s and only one obvious chip, plus a couple of tiny ones, none of them in places where they're a real nuisance.

Midnightpony · 23/01/2018 19:41

Ok so mixed responses and some funny stories Grin
I think on balance I'll give it a try. The ideas of buying seconds/sales/eBay/outlets are good ones. I was interested to hear they replaced your set Red

Our Denby is doing well. There's an outlet shop at their pottery in Denby - the whole place is quite nice actually.

NoWordForFluffy · 23/01/2018 19:43

I've had most of ours since 2004 and none of it has chipped. I broke a tea plate once, but it's lasted well. I've probably cursed it now! 😂

k567 · 23/01/2018 19:45

I have an inherited set of Denby with no chips whatsoever. I have a set from Next now covered in chips and scratches.

WeAllHaveWings · 23/01/2018 19:45

Mines is 23 years old chunky style, and I have a tea plate, a bowl and a medium plate chipped (all dh being heavy handed when emptying the dishwasher).

Did consider cashing in my tesco clubcard points for a whole new set but they didn’t have all the plate sizes and bowls I wanted in stock.

IJoinedJustToPostThis · 23/01/2018 19:45

Our Denby is 8 years old and unchipped, apart from the mugs. We use it every day. We have laminate work tops / floor tiles though, which are a bit more forgiving than better-quality surfaces...

Pearlsaringer · 23/01/2018 19:46

My Denby is intact except for one plate (DH!). Choose carefully because once committed to a pattern it will be with you for a long time! John Lewis sell Denby seconds at a very good price. I’ve also bought online from ecookshop.

Dahlietta · 23/01/2018 19:47

Just noticed they have some stuff from the outlet online too. How exciting Wink

BikeRunSki · 23/01/2018 19:47

I have a set of Denby that we got as a wedding present nearly 18 years ago. One bowl is chipped, but I did drop it on a slate floor.

PJHarveysClutchBag · 23/01/2018 19:48

The white Debby I had was shit. Expected it to be hard wearing but ended up having to get rid of it because it was really chipped and scruffy

bigsighall · 23/01/2018 19:48

My old stuff no chips. Stuff from 5 years or so ago, all chipped

Lulusmother · 23/01/2018 19:49

It does chip and smashes pretty well too. I’ve managed to break a whole lot of Denby ! 🙄

Fekko · 23/01/2018 19:50

We’ve got the white too! Actually mums old set is still going strong (and that has to be 30 years old by now) but we still have one of hers from the mid 60s that is still 99% intact.

Like I say, I’m reallt clumsy!

TricksyLiesmith · 23/01/2018 19:51

It's the most hard wearing I've found . We bought ours the outlets though and some great savings.

Laska5772 · 23/01/2018 19:55

There is a Denby outlet in Gunwharf Quays if you are anywhere near..

Ive had mine many years also .Quite a lot of it was/is seconds from the off.. I have only had to replace a couple of items due to accidents..

AgnesSkinner · 23/01/2018 19:57

Maybe best to buy the top dollar stuff and avoid the Everday range, as that stuff chips like anything. But then, at standard Denby prices I’d be tempted to go for bone china instead.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 23/01/2018 19:57

Our plates are mainly ok apart from one which has a small chip, had them about 2 years and the chip was due to being dropped - amazed it didn't fall to pieces but it withheld the trauma mainly!
