To ask if Denby chips ?

We currently have IKEA plates, bowls etc.
Perfectly adequate, reasonable price. Couldn't afford to pay more at the time. But they've accumulated chips over the last 3 years.
Should I invest in a set of Denby (or similar) or will that chip too , in which case I might as well save the £££ and buy IKEA ?

I could have written your OP! Always wanted Denby but could never justify the expense, but having just broken most of our IKEA plates decided to check out the sale. Went on Boxing day to the factory shop and got 50% off first quality stuff - the seconds department is amazing, and normally great value at 60% off but as it was only 10% difference we didn't bother (but will probably do that if we need to replace any items). They say if you register they will let you know a year in advance of when a range is going to be discontinued and there are several matching services who will source pieces also.

Our Denby is from 1999, used every day, and not a single chip. ILs managed to break a big plate... but that's it. Love my Boston Blue.

I've got Denby White, a mix of the squares and round. I love it. It looks really clean and bright. I bought a few pieces of another brand and they look yellow compared to the Denby. I've lost a few pieces over the years, mainly due to me dropping them on a tiled floor. I've been lucky and managed to pick up replacements from TK Maxx or a local Denby outlet.

Would recommend, very nice quality ImO, but suggest you look around for best prices. I got my original 16 place set years from Costco and have added to it since

Yes it does

My Denby plates haven’t chipped but my mugs have. The plates are glazed but the mugs aren’t, the lips and handles of the mugs are also thinner than the plate edges.

Fozzleyplum · 24/01/2018 08:53

We have Denby (the "rustic" type rather than the white china) as our everyday tableware. It's more robust than most china, but will chip if you really bash it. We got ours as seconds from the outlet at Denby village, as it is much cheaper than the "firsts" . One thing to mention, though, it is very "squeaky" compared with other tableware, if that bothers you.

Afterconkerseason · 24/01/2018 08:59

We have everything Denby, most as wedding presents 4 years ago and family have bought bits and bobs as gifts since. The only things that have chipped so far are some mugs, my mum complained and they sent replacements.

WellTidy · 24/01/2018 08:59

Denby is largely stoneware, so it will chip. Everything chips though. We have maxim from M&S which is porcelain, and that chips less, but it does crack. Not very often though. Dinner plates are £5 each, they do square and round versions.

han01uk · 24/01/2018 09:13

Yes ours were terrible....

SoMuchToBits · 24/01/2018 09:20

I've had my Denby for 20 years and only chipped one plate. I'm fairly clumsy and clank things together quite a bit, so I'd say it's fairly robust.

AnnabelleLecter · 24/01/2018 09:29

No chips in mine (all seconds) and only one breakage when DD used a dish outside and dropped it on a patio slab.

BothersomeCrow · 24/01/2018 09:31

Got our 3 sizes of plate, 2 sizes of bowl, x8 of each, 15 years ago. Have had one smash and one chip in that time. In comparison all four noodle bowls, a serving bowl and 2 of 4 mugs all from another brand have all smashed as they were so fragile John Lewis had discontinued them by the time we returned from our honeymoon.

They also don't stain and survive the dishwasher well.

steppemum · 24/01/2018 09:31

my denby is pretty tough, I do have one chipped bowl, but it is hard to chip.

I also buy fomr the outlet shop if I need to replace! (you have to check the pile carefully though, they are seconds and some are rubbish)

minimonkey11 · 24/01/2018 09:31

I got my Denby for wedding presents 4 years ago and a lot of it is chipped. Used every day.

Fintress · 24/01/2018 09:37

I have a set of Denby Elements and one plate has a tiny chip underneath. I've had it 20 years and use it every day. Wouldn't hesitate to buy another set.

TheVanguardSix · 24/01/2018 09:41

9 year old Denby set. One plate chipped when dropped in the sink. That's been the only casualty in the entire set.
